Info: Holiday Special on 16mm?
Time
First I agree it's a hoax BUT....

It's certainly impossible to fit 97 mins on two reels

16" reels can hold 2000 feet of 16mm film (super 16 and Type W) film which is 55.32 minutes so two reels would cover 110 minutes (multiply 0.02766 x total feet = run time)

The thing is, I think in 1978 the TV stations got either/or 2" quad tape (a reel also) and some stations MAY HAVE gotten 16mm - BASED on what the said studio used for broadcast.

SO, it is possible that there are a few 16mm reel tapes out there, but I think the studio owned them so they had to be returned upon request.

The Phantom Editor Strikes Again
Attack of the Phantom
This is an amazing DVD. Technically sound. Dolby digital. Commentary track and "infinifilm" extras. Even some scene changes and rotoscoping - WAY more advanced than the Episode I cut, which was essentially a cut of the film that lasted maybe an hour. Clearly there was a lot of thought put into this edited version of Lucas' film. This isn't just cutting out characters he didn't like, but really looking at the psychology of the characters and the telling of the core story. The audience seems to be his primary concern. I think it you watched it, you might be surprised at some of the insights the Phantom makes on the film. It is easy to critisize Star Wars films. It is another thing altogether to recut the entire movie.

He starts out by deleting Captain Typho's "I think we're safe" line from the beginning of the film. The Phantom calls it an Friday the 13th moment. If you click the phantom logo that pops up, you can hear an expanded commentary with clips from the horror movies as well.

If you remember the Phantom Edit of Episode I, it was most memorable for removing Jar Jar from the film. Well, this isn't simply cutting a character from the film. Jar Jar is in the film! But several of his scenes are cut down to remove his dialogue, to make the audience feel that he has grown up. "Use him with value" and to help the audience "feel he is intelligent" and that he knows what he is doing.

There were a series of cuts soon after, like Anakin nose dive in chase scene and his weird laughing, the ireverrant power cuplings scene and other awkward humor lines. In one instance the Phantom even moved ambience sound to rear channels in night club scene.

One of the most agressive cuts was the entire Kamino dart subplot - all of the robot analysis scenes are cut along with Dexter Jettster because a simple "Kamino system" line has been added to the Zam Wessel death scene.

He also chose to cut the Yoda and the Younglings scene out of the film, feeling it hurt the Obi-Wan character.

The Phantom even worked in deleted scenes, particularly some of Mace on the Jedicouncil hanger and Anakin visiting the home of Padme. In the director's commentary audio track you hear him explain the changes and defend his actions. He also added in a sad moment of Anakin when Padme says "he's not my boyfriend."

Another aggressive cut was the Jango Fett/Obi-Wan fight. Now it is down to a teaser to build up the event later in the film. At one interesting point in the DVD, he laments the Separatists not becoming the start of the Rebellion. When Dooku comes into the shackled Obi-Wan, it would have been great if the Count talked about the eventual Empire and the was essentially the Father of the Rebel Alliance. He was ahead of his time, perhaps falsely motivated, but in the end was correct.

He talks about the sound design being flawed, like when Anakin and Padme are entering the Genosian the audience can hear the enemies before the Jedi senses it. He changes the sound design so that the Jedi reveals to the audience the problem. He also added in new soud effects and reedited the droid sequence entierly. He didn't like the R2-D2 jets but in the end couldn't get away from them. He felt it was a problem for Lucas, so he invented a new tool for R2 to have. Why doesn't he have them later in the Classic films?

One change I really did like was the fact that the Phantom redid the subtitles in places - the best one being the Death Star cameo. He took away the "duh" moment for the audience, as if you couldn't see it was the Death Star in the earlier two shots.

In the end, the Phantom Editor makes some great points and defends them well in the commentary. Some people just whine about not liking the films, and this guy takes a step at trying his best to "correct" them. Regardless of your opinion of the second prequel, you owe it to yourself to track down this DVD and see for yourself all of the changes and weigh in if indeed it does improve the movie.

Interesting idea, and very well exectued.

Info Wanted: The Phantom Editor and Ep. III Question!
Time
Does anyone know how the Phantom Editor feels about Episode III, and if he plans to do an edited version of that movie?

- NOT sure but check out HIS SITE, we have talked a few times via email and I was told to expect a copy of both edits (I & II) in the mail but that was about 6 months ago - no cool mail and no contact since.

I uploaded this version which as it turns out to be the proper V.2 version.

Sorry if this has been brought up before, I'd just like to know. Point me to correct thread if so.

- Read away man, the search function is not that greatest but the thread are very fun to read!!!!

Also, I downloaded his awesome Clones edit at myspleen.

- You're welcome

Does anyone know of there is a good quality dvd version of his edit of Ep. I out there anywhere?

- A few folks have CLAIMED that a version with commentary is out there but I've not seen it (and I've got like 30+ Star Wars Edits!) I've only found the VCD's (mastered from the 1999 VHS and uploaded to the net - napster RIP!!) and the VHS (a copy of a copy of a copy............) and I have even posted that to myspleen about a year or two ago.

I will be working on a ALL new VCD to DVD version of the Episode 1.1: The Phantom Edit some time in the next few weeks.

SO, unless I happen to hear from the PHANTOM EDITOR or someone else with a "real" DVD version ~ I'll upload the VCD's and a VCD to DVD version. (hint hint wink wink - PLEASE dude don't hold back your public demands it)

Thanks for indulging this pointless thread.

- Well it has a point with me

I have the following if any could be of help, whether there's no uncompressed versions available for these that you have access to or if my MP3s are of a higher bitrate...
* Gongo Edition (128kbps MP3s)
* Los Angeles 2019 (320kbps MP3s)
* Deck Definitive (320kbps MP3s)
* Esper Edition v2.0 (Bitrates vary, ie. some files are 192, some are 224, some 256 and some 320 - all CBR, no VBRs)

I have to say I'm glad an isolated score track is being constructed. I hope that the eventual official release will contain one.

These are what I have -

* Gongo Edition (320 kbps CBR - MP3/FLAC v1.1.1a)
* Esper Edition 2002 V.2? (224-320 kbps VBR - MP3/LAME 3.92)
* Official Warner Bros - 4509-96574-2 (192 kbps CBR - MP3/LAME 3.95.1)
* Vangelis Private Edition Soundtrack - 2019 Off-World Music (128 kbps CBR - MP3/unknown)

I need these from you!!!

* Los Angeles 2019 (320kbps MP3s)
* Deck Definitive (320kbps MP3s)

Could you please use yousendit to get them to me for the collection along with an email so I can add you to the credits??

I have that. I'm your source for all things Harrison

When do you think that version you were talking about that used the entire dual layer disc for slightly better quality will be put to DVD?

I have no idea. Honestly, I'm being the guinea pig for the new version of HDTV2DVD. There have been lots of problems and more often than not, it hasn't worked. I'm still waiting to hear back from Chris, who has been great at working on it.

Beyond that, I'm trying to do my own work on it through TMPGENC which is taking a lot longer...but what can you do.

Rikter, maybe I should put together the dual-layer version of the extras since most of the extras are my masters. I actually found a CNN interview from 92 during the re-release with Ridley. I know I have other stuff as well. I'm sure I could fill up a dual-layer disc. I could do 2 discs and you could do 2.

THAT would be a cool team up - BUT I've already started a isolated score that is matched to your first HD BR version, I could maybe sync it up with a new version. AND if we did this I would really like to do the menus and layout for the discs so they all match. If not that would be cool as well, but if that's the case would it be possible to get all the source files from you for the extras?

Hey Gang,

Well I just wrapped up 4 hours of working on the first 20 minutes of the isolated score; it is taking a few different soundtracks to complete but so far it seems WAY COOL!!

Anyway off to bed as I need to swap out a carburetor and exhaust manifold on my 69’ wagon tomorrow if the weather permits

If I can get 20 minutes done a night it should take about a week or so to complete the new isolated sound mix, but I will also seek out better source materials as I’m working on it!

DIGGITY!

Rikter, I would hope you'd do a single-width case also, as I always put 4-disc sets into single-width 4-disc cases.

- I'll be sure to make one for you!

I'd be interested only in the Denver workprint. Has that been on MySpleen? Neil

- Nope not yet but I've seen a XVID a few months back on mininova (I think) but no DVD; I will most likley upload as Disc 2 of this set

Is there really a point to putting everything together? It seems like everything on your list has been released already.

- Well yes there is, my brother and a best friend asked me too this. So I asked my younger brother if he’d be into a copy - he said yes also

I felt that the 80% of the current BR releases kinda bite, as they all seem to either have very bad menus (or none), no chapter selection or proper chapter stops AND take into account that NONE seem to match any other release (except the versions that I released last year - covers and menus match, chapter selection and stops) so the current versions are a hodgepodge collection of random fan created DVD’s.

That and well I like the story by Phillip K. Dick and I dig the interpretation of the story that Ridley Scott told us in the film (even though it LOOKS more like a Gibson future over the Dick future). So as I am a fan of the story and movie; I would like these somewhat rare titles to have a very nice overall package that brings all these elements into a single boxset.

BUT the REAL reasoning behind putting together a 4 disc set in a big fat 4 disc case is to save ink printing the covers!!!

That cover is awesome, Rikter! - Any chance of getting it early?

- THANKS! The cover I posted is a demo cover the back has no real details as I just cut and pasted it together in a few minutes to show my brother what it would look like in a 4 disc case. BUT once the project is underway and nearing completion I’ll release the full cover set (1 big fat 4 disc cover, 4 single case covers and disc art for all)

Time

This is a fair warning to all, please do not read any further as the views, opinions and ideas presented in the following text are solely mine and do not necessarily represent those of any other living entity in the known or unknown universe[s].

UPDATE:

With the news of the all new boxset, I’ve had to make a few changes to the set but the new OFF-WORLD set should make a great companion set to the official one once it’s out!!

INTEREST CHECK:

I’m going to compile all my Blade Runner DVD’s and transfers I’ve found into a 4 disc box set as pictured and detailed below. I will be using the latest and best transfers (to date and some coming soon) of all of the NA/OOP versions all complied onto dual-layer DVD’s to complete the collection for a few close friends, my brothers and myself but if there is enough interest I MAY upload the set to MySpleen upon completion (1-2 months or less)

THIS SET has been in the works for well over 8 months - a few of you here are aware of the project as you have the first discs from the early version of the set. This set is in NO WAY intended to replace or steal thunder from any previous release[s]. It’s just a much cooler presentation of ALL the know stuff that is out there.

YES, it is true that the majority of the contents of this set are “already out there” but it’s VERY spread out over MANY discs and most of them cannot be found on the internet at this time, some folks do not have the means to download what can be found. So NOW, I’m gathering it all into one definitive fan created collection. Again this set is really being created for family, friends and me; but if there is enough interest I’d be happy to share the set via torrents and trades.
