You're better off not seeing them. They were really, really bad.

Yeah, I'll make both a PAL and NTSC version.
EDIT: Also, I can't take full credit for being the man. Don't forget our anonymous hero who capped the stream in HD and has nicely uploaded it for me.
I can handle the authoring just fine, I've been using DVD-lab Pro for about four years now and I'm pretty adept at it. The hard part is going to be the converting.
I actually just got word from a lurker here who wishes to remain anonymous that he was able to cap the HD stream from Sky. He sent me a few screenshots, which look pretty excellent. He's going to send me the raw stream, and then from there, it's a matter of me (or someone who wants to help) doing a good PAL-2-NTSC and HD-2-DVD job for mass consumption.
I've just read (on the most reliable of all sources, the IMDb message boards) that the French DVD will not contain the Cannes Cut, as the company was not able to license it. It will apparently contain deleted scenes and a commentary, however. Anyway, did anyone here manage to make a good cap of this from Sky?
How do you figure that downscaling the HD broadcast will yield a better result than the retail DVD?
I'd love to see these at the Spleen, I'd snatch them in a heartbeat.
Is this the original 1971 version or the George Lucas Director's Cut? If it's the director's cut (which I would assume, knowing how Lucas does with his films), then why bother making the DVD of it?
Is that widescreen screencap is from the Legend Films DVD? Because I heard that looked pretty nice.
Try as I might, I can't get RMC to catch these:
So a friend of mine videotaped an event that I held back in August using one of those HDV hard drive videocameras. He sent me a hard drive with the video on it, but when he captured it, Final Cut turned it into Apple Intermediate Codec MOV files. It's a pain in the ass to deal with, since I'm very familiar with encoding MPEG2 on Windows, and not at all on a Mac. So can anyone recommend to me a good tool to encode MPEG2 with on OSX? And, while we're at it, AC3 audio? If the answer is "Compressor," then I guess I'll actually have to figure out how the hell to use that program.
Are you asking how to put the mono audio in both stereo channels, or how to separate elements and make it into a stereo track? The first thing is easy, I'm fairly sure the second thing can't be done.
I really hope there's either some torrenting or RapidShare uploading of this set, as it looks sickeningly wonderful.
Oh, fantastic! I may call upon your help come March. Thanks for the info!
Yeah, I nabbed that when I first heard of this (I noted it in my first post here), but I'm holding out for a higher-quality version to watch it.
A fellow on the Cinemageddon forums with SkyMovies has volunteered to record it! Not sure whether he intends to do a DVD or just capture to a video file, waiting for a response now. But this is still excellent news!
I think I have a 16:9 version of the '79 theatrical cut. I'll check and post back here.
Howard the Duck is coming to DVD in the US. Wow. With bonus features!
"A Look Back at Howard the Duck" "Releasing the Duck" News Featurette "The Stunts of Howard the Duck" "The Special Effects of Howard the Duck" "The Music of Howard the Duck" Teaser Trailers
I read about the French DVD a few places, but there was no source quoting and, like you, I can't find it on any retailers. I tried Amazon.fr, Virgin.fr and CDWow, and for a DVD supposedly being released this month, that is a bit weird. I think a cap from Sky is still in order, just for safety.
Very cool! 152mins sounds about right, the Cannes cut is supposedly 160mins long, and based on the crappy MP4 I was able to download, a simple (and annoying) speedup was applied. If one is a Sky subscriber, could one download the on-demand version? Would that be better than capping it from a broadcast?
Thanks for that info! I was having trouble finding repeat airings. Are you in the country? Could you capture it somehow?
The MP4 file in question, I found on that one tracker that's like a small suprnova.
I'm not totally positive. I know it runs fifteen minutes longer than the American theatrical cut and it's structured very differently in places. The guy who ripped/uploaded the MP4 also uploaded a bunch of clips to YouTube:

Apparently Sky Movies in the UK aired the original Cannes cut of Southland Tales a few times earlier this month. I’ve only been able to find a 861mb MP4 file that will undoubtedly be pretty low quality (it’s almost three hours long). Would some of the UK folks around here mind keeping an eye out and trying to make a proper preservation?
