The Mask: workprint composite (* unfinished project *)
Time

Thanks to the help of klokwerk and an MPEG2 plugin for Premiere (which I’m quite adept at), I’ve started doing this composite cut between the copy of the workprint I have and the open matte 4x3 transfer on the original DVD of the flick from 1997. Do I have a life? No. I got about the first 10mins done tonight. What has surprised me about the beginning is that during the bank scene, just about all the shots that wound up in the final film are the exact same cuts as the workprint. And the scene after it, in Dorian’s office, the cuts are a bit tighter than in the workprint. Quality of the workprint and jerky preview playback in Premiere might make this take longer than I had first anticipated, but it should fo fairly smoothly. I’ll post updates here as they become worth posting, but I just thought I’d give a heads up that I’m going ahead with this project.

HOLD ON a second...
Time
Also think of this:

The main feature is the 2004 version and the bonus is the original version. I can't think of a single instance where the widescreen/fullframe nature of a DVD has applied to bonus features like deleted scenes and whatnot. So, while you make a very good point, Davis, this might be their way of thinking. But really, in this instance, I'm playing devil's advocate and hoping you're right.

Star Wars: George's Original Vision (The Lost Cut)
Time
I just watched this through to see how it worked out. For as much time as I put into it, it's pretty good. Not great, but watchable to see how it plays out. I'd encourage only the really interested to check it out, otherwise you might find yourself disappointed by the lack of quality. I'd also encourage others to check it out and try to use as a template to do a project like this justice.

Star Wars: George's Original Vision (The Lost Cut)
Time

I was bored tonight and had a whole lot of nothing on my plate. Pretty much just sitting at home in front of my computer or TV. It’s been brought up a few times in the past that someone should go back and try to re-create the “Lost Cut” that we’ve all heard so much about. Well, I haven’t done quite that, because I haven’t tried to remove the score and I haven’t re-edited WWII dogfights for those scenes or anything like that.

What I have done is taken a copy of the original version of Star Wars, re-inserted the deleted/alternate scenes that are floating around, and put a bunch of other stuff back in the original scripted order. This is a real quick and dirty edit. I did it in about 4hrs.

If someone wants to put a lot of finesse into doing a project like this, please do so. Some of the changes between different sources are kinda harsh, and there’s some nasty sound cuts, too. I edited in Womble and didn’t bother to de-mux the audio first, so if I modified any of it, it would have been recompressed, and I didn’t want that. As a result, there are a few kinda rough audio cuts, and one really really harsh one. I was just bored tonight, and I thought this would be a nice new way to watch Star Wars for myself, so I did it pretty much for myself. I just figured that there are some of you here who also might want to check it out.

I used a variety of sources for this thing:
*Deleted Magic (for deleted scenes, general order of things, and the entirety of the Battle of Yavin, because it was far easier to just lift it)
*Return of the Ewok DVD (for revised Jabba scene)
*Star Wars EditDroid edition (for the majority of the footage)
*Star Wars Molly Prototype XP77-4EB.1 [EditDroid video/Moth3r mono audio] (see note below)
*Star Wars 1997 SE Jedi/Feta edition (for Biggs scene toward the end)

I wanted to use the Molly Prototype for the whole thing because it has the Moth3r-sourced mono mix as the audio. I didn’t realize, however, that the audio drifts out of sync throughout the picture. When I noticed that, I cut out everything where the audio was out of sync and switched to just using EditDroid as a source of main audio and video. So the audio mix presented here is a real Frankenstein’s monster of sorts. It’s mostly the mono mix for the first 20mins, then the 1985 mix for most of the rest of it, with one or two instances of the mono mix (lifted from Deleted Magic) thrown back in where most important.

I took the Biggs scene toward the end from the Jedi/Feta edition because it was the only 4x3 letterbox source I had for the scene, which matched all of the other video sources that I used. I didn’t want to fuss with squeezing down a 16x9 image into the project for something so short.

Like I said, this was done quick, dirty and rough. It is by no means up to the quality standards that are set forth by all of the other editors here, but it should be fun to watch. I’m going to author the DVD tomorrow. I’ve already recieved 3 requests for the “promo” copies, which will go out next week. I’d like you guys to PiF to anyone who asks nicely.

If anyone wants to suggest a better title (because the one I thought up is pretty freakin’ stupid), please do so. Same goes for anyone who feels compelled to whip up a cover or something.

George Lucas on the O-OT

As per the promotional tagline for the set "one last time."

The 1995 release was the last video (read: VHS) release of the trilogy, but he had not yet decided it would be the last period.
Same as above. "Own the original, one last time."

"In the years to come I hope you, your children, and your children's children will enjoy not only this trilogy ... "

Note that Lucas wrote "this trilogy," instead of the more ambiguous "the trilogy," etc. He is clearly referring to the original original trilogy.

It doesn't seem to me that he's clearly referring to the OOT, it seems he's referring to the prequel trilogy that had been gestating in his beard-- err, brain for years.

To me, it seems clear that in 1995 Lucas had every intention of keeping the original edition and Special Edition alive side-by-side.

Again, back to the "one last time" thing.

"but also the adventures yet to come in the continually unfolding STAR WARS universe."

Again, the gestating prequels.

Just my take on it, though.

Capture card reccomendations
Time
I have a Canopus ADVC-110 converter box, but it's kind of out of comission and I'm going to get it repaired, but I'm also thinking about just getting a capture card. This is what I would like out of it:

*RCA/S-video inputs on the back of it, sticking out of the computer (or something just as easy)
*Ability to capture to whatever codec I prefer
*Macrovision disabilization

Can anyone kindly reccomend one that sounds like it might fit the description? Thanks!

Should Lucus make 4,5 and 6 over?

No, we haven't gotten what we wanted. Is the OT coming out on DVD? Yeah. Will it be any better than what we already have? Everything at this time points to "no." We haven't yet been given a good reason to actually buy these things that are coming out when we already own things that look just as good.

Don't knock it until you see it because you might just be eating your words if you like the remakes. If they came out better than the prequels everyone who said it would be a mistake will be jumpin on the band wagon saying that it was a good idea. So the point is give it a chance because you just never know.

No, we do know. There is absolutely no way that, if Lucas remade the OT, they would be any better than the ones he originally made. Lucas has proved time and time again that he's become more inept at filmmaking as time progresses. That's not going to change.

New DVDs NOT 16x9
Time
Has anyone attempted to call and leave a voicemail, rather than sending something in the mail? And if so, do you know Jim Ward's extension? I kinda purposely wanted to do it after business hours because I don't want to wind up actually talking to the dude, because I'd probably just mutter something about a wrong number and hang up.
