STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time
I loved the clip adywan, but I like the idea that dumb_kid had about the DS being in orbit around a rocky almost asteroid like planet. This is an excerpt I found in The Completely Unofficial Star Wars Encyclopedia.

Death Star
this satellite-sized battle station was developed by the Geonosians, under the direction of Darth Tyranus. These plans were later refined by Tol Sivron at the Maw installation, and the battle station was built by Bevel Lemelisk and Imperial Engineering. As the Alliance began to gather support, it was Grand Moff Tarkin who asked for a superweapon with which he could control the entire Outer Rim Territory, and the Death Star was the perfect weapon. It housed a huge superlaser which combined the output of multiple lasers into a single, focused beam. A huge focusing lens was built to accomplish this, located on the upper hemisphere. The superlaser was designed to be targeted at anything from a capital ship to a planet. This objective was known only to a select few, for Tarkin and the Maw's top scientists decided that they should downplay the role of superweapon to keep the project on schedule. In order to ensure continued cooperation of their employees, project engineers were told that the station would be used to break down dead planets, in an effort to reach the core of elements easier.

...According to Imperial sources, the first Death Star took too long to construct, exceeding Palpatine's every deadline. It was built in orbit around the prison world Despayre. Labor for the construction was taken at will from the prison below. When the first Death Star was completed, Tarkin ordered the superlaser tested on the planet Despayre itself. Needless to say, this initial test exceeded even Tarkin's wildest dreams.

I agree that the Jabba scene doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but seeing Boba Fett stare ominously at the audience was the one thing I really enjoyed about it. Borrowing from Arnold here, it was like he was saying "I'll be back." with that look. It takes him one second to turn and look at the camera, another second to do his look, and finally one more second to turn back around as the wipe comes across the screen. We're only talking about three seconds worth of screen time; I don't think it lasts long enough to spoil anything, no offense intended to you Mr. Bungle.

I also know a lot of people disliked the Jawa/Ronto scene. I actually liked that small scene. It wasn't a pie-in-the-face, poo poo, Jar Jar schtck joke. It was just a short scene with a funny moment in it. You know that everyone here has scene that speeder bike driver at least once in their lives . If it were Storm Troopers on that Ronto, that would be something else, but it's Jawas. Their always funny. I hope you keep this scene because, although I haveliked many of the edits out there of A New Hope, some of the new scenes that I liked have been taken out and I wish they would have been included. I know you can't please everyone, but this one thing I hope does make the final cut.

Your compositing is excellent. The most noteable composite is when the trooper asks luke how long he's had the droids. There is a little bit of noise present, but it is leaps and bounds beyond anything we've seen before. Great work.

You said you're still working on color correction and I just want to point out the most offensive scene in my mind. The SE shot where the speeder drives by the Rebel transport ship. The Speeder is very red, and C-3PO is a very yellow gold. I think that the whole scene needs to have the stauration pulled down.

Looking good!

I've always hated the dice too.

I think having a hologram projected from the ball in the center of the table is a geat idea.

I would like to see all new death star trench schematics for that scene. Something that fits better with the whole saga.

Once again, holograms above the dish they are watching in the war room would be great.

And of course, a friggin' medal for chewie already. Although I don't konw how you would make it look like Leia is giving it to him.

Great ideas SSWR!

Why would you want to remove Obi-Wan calling him Darth? The way I see it, Obi-Wan calls him that in an angry/regretful tone.

DV: "When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I am the master."

OW: "Only a master of evil, Darth."

He is almost mocking him for his bad choices and his high and mighty attitude. It is better that he calls him Darth, and not Vader because of this context. Vader calls himself the 'master', a Dark Lord of the Sith, or simply a Darth. In this case, Obi-Wan is directly attacking his stance as a 'master' aka 'Darth'. You can almost imagine Obi-Wan saying to him after the previous dialogue, "Look how far you have fallen." It is Anakin's delusion that he is some great master, but the only thing he is a master of is evil, and more importantly, hate.

It may not have been designed that way originally, but knowing the full story as we all do now, that is what I think when I watch it. From a story-telling point of view, understood this way it gives a subtle hint to the audience not only of the bad blood bewteen them, but the stress on the name/title also draws attention to the fact that this is not the name/title by which Obi-Wan used to know him.

Just my thoughts.

Adywan, really liked what you did with the ship losing control. In my example I really exaggerated the movement, but I think your less is more approach is better. I agree about what has been said about the explosion though. It looks a little too layered, and I don't think it blends as well as it could with the rest of the footage. I know this is just a test though, so I'm sure the final product is going to be excellent.

I had considered the objection about the tractor beam before I posted here. My reasoning for Liuke's question had two possible answers. One, he's just a farm boy and wouldn't know much about what a tractor beam would look like. Or, the tractor beam does look different than the one earlier. If you go with the first explanation, then they two beams could be the same. If you go with the second, I thought that the DS tractor beam could actually envelop the Falcon. Meaning that the ship is surrounded by a small glow as it is being pulled toward the station. In this way, you wouldn't really notice the small glow through the cockpit, but you would see it in the wide shot. In either case, Han's reply can just be seen as him explaining what the deal is to Luke who either doesn't know what the beam is or who can't see what is happening to the ship.

I was thinking more about the Tantive IV explosion scene. On top of camera shake and enhancing the hit the other thing that I think would make it look better is to have the ship react to the explosion. Just after the ship is hit and the explopsion occurs, the ship loses control a bit. I made what can only amount to a animatic using footage from the DVD. It's short and just a proof of concept. If the idea were to be done I think it would have to be achieved by recreating the shot using CG animation, but I think it would add something to the scene.

Here's a Yousendit link to my idea: Tantive IV Rough Concept

The other thing that I have always wanted to see in Star Wars is the Tractor Beam. In Star Trek you seam a beam(s) of light shining onto the ship to show the effect, but in Star Wars you don't see anything. I would love to see an actual tractor beam, something in the vein of Star Trek would be great although it doesn't have to be, added to the shot of Tantive IV in the beginning, and to the Millenium Falcon later in the movie.

SomethingStarWarsRelated, I like the idea of enhancing the Tantive IV four explosion scene. You're right that there it's mostly smoke and to me it has always seemed like too much. I think the size of the smoke plume gives away the fact that the ship is a model. What would be nice to see is some of that smoke removed and add a core explosion to it. If done right, the core explosion should show how bad a hit it was without ruining the effect. Adding a small amount of camera shake just as it hits would also be a great idea.

Adywan could do wonders for this scene.

Info Wanted: Did M. Night Shyamalan make changes to his movies when they hit DVD?

"The titles at the end of Unbreakable also go a long way toward singlehandedly ruining a good film."

I agree with you one hundred percent. That is why I was shocked when I saw them.

"Don't know where you woulda seen that version. Bootleg, mayhaps?"

I don't think that I saw Unbreakable in the theater. I probably rented it as I know I've never seen a bootleg of the movie.

It could have been something else now that I think of it. Although it is not advertised, I believe that Giant Eagle's Iggle Video edits some of their movies. I had caught Disturbing Behavior on TV one night and started to watch from about midway through. There was a scene where James Marsden and Katie Holmes hook-up before going back into town to save his little sister. I wanted to see the whole movie so I went out one night and rented it from Giant Eagle. I brought it home and after watching it was quite surprised to find that the scene where they got it on was missing. They went right from scene previous to driving back to town. I was once again beside myself trying to figure out if I imagined the whole thing. At some point later I got to see it again and the scene was intact. Does this mean that Giant Eagle edits their movies for sexual content? I don't know for sure. At the time most of my rentals came from there and so I don't have a point of reference. It probably would have been while I still going there that I would have rented Unbreakable. It is possible that the version I remember came from there. I don't live near a Giant Eagle anymore so I can't test my theory.

I know this sounds a little far fetched, but I am not making any of this up. Just wish I had some proof of what I'm talking about.

Info Wanted: Did M. Night Shyamalan make changes to his movies when they hit DVD?
Time

My wife and I both think that there have been changes made to the DVD versions of Unbreakable and Signs. In Unbreakable, I swear that the original ending had no subtitles. I was recently watching my Vista Series Unbreakable DVD and was shocked to see this. The way I remember it, the scene plays out the same way as on the DVD, but without the messages regarding the Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson characters. The shock and devastation felt by David Dunn can be felt much better by the audience without the quick and dirty explanation of what happens to Elijah. I swear I have seen it without the ending text, but the problem is I can’t remember where. I don’t think that I saw the movie in the theater, so maybe what I saw was a VHS? I’m hoping somebody here can help me out.

The other change we noticed was in Signs. When Mel Gibson’s character is in that guy’s kitchen and the alien’s hand comes out from under the door we remember it differently. In the theater, the hand comes out very briefly and is a greenish color. On the DVD, the hand is shown for what seems like several seconds more and is very reddish in color. The Unbreakable change is something that only I noticed, but this one in Signs is something we both agree on.

Has anyone else noticed this about these movies or anything else about M. Night Shyamalan’s films? It looks to me like he is pulling a George Lucas and I really would like to know that I am not going crazy here.

I just thoughT I would point out something I noticed in the canyon clip. The establishing shot of R2 has a very orange/sunset sky over head, but in the following shots the rocks. jawas, ans R2 all look like it is dawn. I know this is an issue with official DVD, but I was hoping you might address in your project. All it would need is a little red/orange splashed over the footage. Also, in the last shot of that sequence, you can see a patch of blue sky over top of one of the mountain peaks. This is a dead give away that the time of day is wrong.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)

It sounded like TM put his dialogue recordings through a couple of different filters before plugging it into the video. I agree that there was too much echo and it almost sounds at times that you slowed the sound sample down to give it an even lower pitch. I don't know for sure, but that is what it sounded like to me. Of course, the best recording would always be to actually use a voice-actor that has a deep voice. Short of that, just trying your darndest to make your own voice deep is most times preferrable to using a filter to make it sound that way. Since it seems that most people agree it should be a bit higher in pitch anyway, I think that TM will find a way to achieve good results.

Thought the lightsaber looked good.

The ships from Dune were a nice addition to that scene.

Was actually interested when Padme was running through the Droid Factory.

I agree with everyone about the voice being too low. At the very end of the trailer when he says "I hope you like flying," I think the pitch was much better.

The OT music worked well.

Look forward to seeing the final product.

SS is just a pathetic geek trying to cash in on fans love of Star Wars by scamming people. He doesn't know George Lucas or is in anyway associated with anyone who knows him or works for him. If you ever see anything on his website that has any credence it is only because he found it on another website and cut and pasted it on his. Never, never trust that website.

I hope no one takes that last part seriously and donates money to that wank!

.:. MoveAlong's - The Story of Star Wars .:. Complete!
Time
Rating 10/10

This is a wondefully crafted project that truly shows the kind of care and dedictaion that MoveAlong put into it. The editing is superb; nice combination of stills with moving video. I haven't watched one of the Star Wars movies in a long time since I have seen them so many times and know them so well. As much as I wanted to watch this DVD after I got it I was reluctant because I didn't want to sit through what could have possibly been another 2 hour movie with some narration. I was happily impressed how MA was able to make the movie work in a shorter more fast-paced way.

The DVD-Rom portion is fun to look through, and the easter egg was a nice touch especially for people who had the Story of Album growing up. The audio options are what really make this DVD go from good to outstanding though. The choice of whether to listen to the movie with the straight '77 audio or a combination of the '04 and '77 is excellent. I have to say that I love the combo version best, but decide for yourselves.

I enjoyed the movie from start to finish, and eagerly await the next installments.

The only thing that could have made this better would have been having someone who actually knew what they were doing make the title crawl for this porject; what a hack!

Great work MA, keep it up.
