Lethe -- Yeah, I know I need a lot of RAM, but thanks for the advice about the CPU.

norinradd -- I know that some (or all?) Macs have dual processors, but where do I find a PC like that other than building it myself. I'm really not that up on the intricacies of computer building to build my own, so I just want to get a pre-built one, and also that way I should avoid any compatability problems which always seem to plague me even when I add an HP device to an HP computer. I want to make this easy, but get the best pre-built computer, for my purposes, that I can. If you have any other advice, I guess PM me so we don't get this thread off-topic. THANK YOU very much for your help though.

ricarleite -- Not to be picky, but the name is actually Sebastian Shaw, not Shawn. We need to get it right for the narration. And if I can make a suggestion, I'd leave out any reference to the Prequel Trilogy except if it is in context such as "Lucas is making further changes to make his 20 year old Trilogy fit together better with his new Prequel Trilogy" for example. Otherwise I think we should keep this focused squarely on the Original Trilogy and not confuse the issue. The point is that it is the OT that we care about and want to preserve. We shouldn't spend precious screen time mocking the Prequels, they are irrelevant to our cause. Besides, none of it should be in an insulting tone, we should be respectful to Lucas in the doc so that we are more sympathetic. Remember, our position is that we don't mind Lucas tinkering with his movies as long as he provides us with the original versions on DVD and eventually HD-DVD. We want to have a positive messae (ie, the SE's are fine, but we want to PRESERVE the original). We want to stress the preservation angle and not cloud the issue with negativity toward the new versions. We are free to think whatever we want about the SEs, but think of this as a propaganda piece...and propaganda must be delicately crafted to gain wide support, and not alienate those who otherwise might help. We don't want to alienate people who like the SEs and/or feel it is sacrelige to criticize Lucas. Most of those people would probably support an effort to preserve the OT, but if it isn't as important to them as it is to us then we risk offending them if we are too harsh on Lucas, the SE's or even the Prequels. Believe me, being all PC and nice is not in my nature either, but it is really required here. This is propaganda, not neccessarily a documentary. It is more important for us to gain support than to be totally open about our feelings and anger here. And, we don't want to come off as a bunch of angry fan-boys, but rather dedicated film preservationists. This is key. If the film doesn't garner us any support it is a complete waste of time. As far as using "tricks" from films like "Roger And Me" that's not a bad idea, because those films (Moore's films) are propaganda, not documentaries, but that is fine for our purposes, because that is what we want to make as well. Remember, our primary purpose isn't documenting the tampering-with of the OT and the denial of the original cut's existence (it's common knowledge among fans), but to gain attention and support for our cause. The only difference between our propaganda film and Moore's propaganda film is that everything that we say will be objectively true, where Moore's films are riddled with lies, half-truths and deceptions, and as full of holes as a Dan Rather "news story" on CBS's 60 Minutes. So, if we stick to the truth (which is our weapon) then we'll wind up making a nice documentary as well as a propaganda piece without even trying, but that is just a bonus, we're more concerned with influencing people to help us.

Your ideas so far are pretty good though. We should have a number of us get together and write the script. Physically that will probably be impossible, so we can exchange email addresses and knock around ideas like that and piece it together online between us. Hopefully we can get an even wider group of people to film, gather and edit footage as well. Every bit counts. We should also do some signature gathering at conventions to put together a physical paper petition and then mail it to Lucasfilm when we have a crapload of signatures. And we should definetly gather at SW Celebration III, gather names for the petition there and just make our cause known in general there and at other conventions. Who's with me on this?

Info Wanted: Bonus Material not offered by the major bootleggers
Time
Molly, you may be able to get that 5 Star set on Ebay for like $10. I just want to make sure I have a good copy of the original cut of the OT before I even bother with it.

Starkiller, TR47 offers "From Star Wars To Jedi" and so does Rikter, I think. I'll be getting that stuff soon enough. Oh, and make sure when you have that NOVA special transferred you offer it for sale here! I'd definetly like to see that.

I hope to amass a comprehensive bonus material library. I have the George Lucas A&E biography on VHS and unless I can buy it on DVD, I'll transfer it myself. I also have the MSNBC profile of Lucas, the PBS documentary "George Lucas: Heroes, Myth and Magic," and "Masters of Fantasy: Dennis Muren" all on VHS which I will transfer unless someone beats me to it and does a good job. I will of course offer all of these to you guys. Does anyone have the Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher A&E Biographies? Does anyone know if they are available from A&E on DVD? It would also be great if someone could get a hold of the "Magic Of Myth" documentary from the exibit and transfer that or copy it if it was already on DVD. It'd also be cool if someone could get a hold of the James Earl Jones audio tour of that exibit too.

Info Wanted: Which Anamorphic Transfer is better?
Time
So I guess the Prillaman site reviewed the Dr. Gonzo version because the anamorphic set he reviewed had menus and commentary tracks. But now the commentary tracks are available on the TR47 7-disc set bonus discs, except there you can't turn it on during the actual movie and, instead, have to watch the scenes with the commentary separately, right? So, I guess no currently existing anamorphic bootleg has the Leia welding scene. Oh well, as long as it's on the other versions. Any way I can see an example of the quality of the Farsight set as compared to the Dr. Gonzo set? Anyone here selling the Farsight set? Between this site and the Prillaman site, I'm going to be an expert on SW DVD bootlegs! lol. Anyway, thanks for the info, keep it coming.

R2, thanks for the info. Maybe you got one of those "LOOK" sets? Of course, I wouldn't buy a crappy bootleg trilogy just to get the Maltin interviews on DVD, I could just transfer that myself, I have the Faces VHS trilogy. As far as the 5 Star SE trilogy bootlegs, I may get that to possibly use material from that in my own edit of an "acceptable Edition" with the acceptable/livable changes... or mabye even as a possible source for editing together a higher quality transfer of the original cut...but that would be quite a daunting task.

This is the first I've heard of the "Fraz" set. It came fom some sort of master tapes for commercial broadcast? Is that what you're saying? How can I see any example of what this set looks like? How would I obtain a copy of this set?

Thanks to everyone for the input, hopefully the posts will keep coming.

Yeah, I know everyone in the industry uses Macs but everything I own in hardware and software is PC, and I'm familiar with using the PC, where I'm lost on a Mac. Plus this will be used for a general purpose computer as well as video editing, so I want to be comfortable with it. I just don't think I'm willing to switch to a Mac. I'll be satisfied with a PC even if it's not as good, I just need to know which PC to get. Thanks for the advice though. If I had loads of money I'd get a Mac just for video editing and use a PC for net surfing and everything else that I normally do that doesn't require that kind of specialization that the Mac has.

That link doesn't work Daniel. Anywhere else I can see the tin? And are you saying that no tins physically exist yet? But Paul Champagne is planning to produce them? Thanks.

I'm up for any help I can give: collecting footage, editing, etc. Anything that gives our plight more attention is good, and this certainly could garner more attention for our cause.
One thing though, is that before I can do any editing, I'm shopping for a new computer that I intend to do video editing on...anyone have any suggestions? I was hoping to get either a Sony Vaio "media center" PC or a Hewlet Packard "Media center" PC. I'm pretty sure I want an ATI Radeon video card, but I'm not sure what else I should make sure I have. How important is the difference between 2.8 GHz CPU and a 3.0 or 3.2 GHz CPU? Any help would be great.

We should also organize a paper petition too, I think that would get more attention than an online petition, there are millions of those. We should have people go to every convention possible and physically collect signatures. We should have a large presence at the Star Wars Celebration III and collect signatures there and just bring attention to our cause. Anyone with me there? We should organize this.

Info Wanted: Which Anamorphic Transfer is better?

Thanks for the info.

I am in contact with Kristhemovieman, I sent him money to buy his set based on the review at Prillaman.net before I came here and there was a mix-up and I didn't get it. We're sorting it out now.

I have a low-mid range DVD player and a 32" Sony Trinitron TV, so I don't know how much difference I'd find either. Do you think it is worth having both the TR47 set AND the Dr. Gonzo set? Or maybe I should wait until any further transfers are done as they're likely to be better than the Dr. Gonzo set and also anamorphic....what do you think?

Thanks. I'll have to check that out. So that would mean that most people on here who refer to an anamorphic set are therefore referring to the more common "Dr. Gonzo" version? Okay. I'm trying to get the 3-disc non-anamorphic "Kristhemovieman" set right now, and will probably get the TR47 7-disc set as well. I'm just wondering if I should bother getting either of the anamorphic sets, and if so, which one? And so there is a lot of interest in the "MeBeJedi" and "Laserman" transfers? What about TR47's possible new transfer? I haven't seen much interest there. Are there any other transfers on the horizon I should know about? Can anyone here compare the 2 anamorphic sets?

Thanks, OoJason,
I would've liked if this other thread reviewed both anamorphic sets and the non-anamorphic Kristhemovieman set. I also need info on any upcoming transfers and the "bonus material" sets.

I would really like to put together the most comprehensive collection possible for the OT, but I need to get the actual OT DVDs first of all, so please help me decide which sets are worth getting. I'm not against getting more than one, in fact I most likely will, but I still want to avoid the totally aweful ones.

The most frustrating part of this is that if Lucas would just release the damn OT on DVD there would only be one version worth having and this wouldn't be so damn complicated.

Info Wanted: Bonus Material not offered by the major bootleggers
Time

The 4-disc “TR47” set, the 7-disc “TR47” set, the 3-disc “Kristhemovieman” dual-layer non-anamorphic set, the 4-disc (I think) “Dr. Gonzo” anamorphic set, the 4-disc (I think) “farsight” anamorphic set, the Rikter set (which ever he is offering), the Laserman set (which ever he is offering), and the MeBeJedi set, the 6-disc Rikter bonus materials set, the Holiday Special, and the VCD with the trailers…these are the major OT bootlegs I know to exist. Does anyone know of any additional bonus material that belongs in a complete collection but doesn’t appear on any of the discs in any of the above-listed sets?

I can only think of the Leonard Maltin interviews from the “Faces” trilogy, the restoration/SE enhancements documentary on the 1997 SE trilogy, PBS’s “George Lucas: Heroes, Myth, and Magic,” “The A&E George Lucas Biography,” The A&E Biographies for Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, The MSNBC profile of Lucas, “Masters of Fantasy: Dennis Muren,” any additional trailers or TV spots, TV commercials for toys and other products, and, what the Hell, Chewie getting his medal at the MTV Movie Awards.

Of course there is also Hardware Wars, but that is available on DVD, and there is also the upcoming Ewoks movies, and Ewoks and droids cartoons which are either being released soon or will eventually be released.

I would really like to put together the most comprehensive collection possible for the OT. Of course I need to get the actual OT DVDs first so please see my other threads about the different bootlegs to help me decide which sets are worth getting. I’m not against getting more than one, in fact I most likely will, but I still want to avoid the totally aweful ones.

Info Wanted: How many bootleg DVD sets are there that are worth talking about?
Time

What worthwhile bootleg DVD sets of the OT (original cut) are there out there and what are their specs, which ones are available as factory pressed DVDs, what exactly are in each set, and where can they be found and for how much?

I know of the 4-disc “TR47” set, the 7-disc “TR47” set, the 3-disc “Kristhemovieman” dual-layer non-anamorphic set, the 4-disc (I think) “Dr. Gonzo” anamorphic set, the 4-disc (I think) “farsight” anamorphic set. I understand that Rikter, Laserman, and MeBeJedi are also offering or planning to offer something. Anyone have any details on these? I also think I saw TR47 say something about doing another transfer from 20th Century Fox master tapes. Any details TR47? What kind of “master tapes” are these? Studio interpositives? Prints? Do you have all three films?

I also saw the Rikter 6 disc bonus material set listed in another thread. And something about a VCD of trailers mentioned somewhere. There was also a link in another thread to a website called “Apt Irrelevance” where the webmaster says he’s making a transfer as well. Any info on that?

I’m just trying to get a complete listing of what’s available in one thread here. I hope you guys will help me. I’m trying to organize my thoughts, so I know what is out there and what is in each set, and the source and technical quality of each set. I hope you all will help me compile all of this information in this thread for easy reference.

Basically the info I’m looking to collect here for each set are these things:

  • Version differences between sets (example: 3PO tractor beam line, present or not? Any other differences?)
  • Source of each set (ex: 1993 Definitive Collection CAV LDs, 1995 THX “Faces” CLV LDs, UK PAL VHS “Executor Box Set”, etc.)
  • Exact content of each set (ex: movies, making of features, featurettes, interviews, trailers, etc.)
  • Technical specifications of each set (ex: Dual-Layer?, Anamorphic?, menus?, audio type, subtitles?, amount of data on disc, bitrate)
  • What is it available as? Factory pressed DVD or DVD-R?
  • Does it include cases/cover art?
  • How good is the picture? Color? Brightness? Contrast? Hugh? Saturation?
  • How good is the audio? How good is the mix? Which mix is it?
  • Are any LaserDisc side or disc changes noticeable and if so, how badly?
  • Where can it be found? How much does it cost?

Finally are there any of ther DVD bootlegs of the OT out there that I didn’t list above that are worth mentioning? And is there any further OT bonus material not found on any of these sets I mentioned that are known to exist on DVD? And if the answer to either of these questions is yes, then where can it be found and for how much? DVD, or DVD-R?

Thank you all for your help in advance!

I just started coming here and I understand that there are two anamorphic transfers of the OT both using the Definitive Collection LDs as their source. I understand they are known as the “Dr. Gonzo” and “Farsight” versions. Which one is better? What are their relative strengths and weaknesses? Are both missing the “Leia welding scene?” Comparisons? Any other relavant info?

I am looking to get a new computer, and one of the major reasons I want a new one is for video editing. I would even like to try my own hand at editing together my own cut of the Star Wars movies. My question is, if I'm not building my own computer, what computer would you reccommend for this? I am considering the Sony Vaio Media Center computers and the HP Media Center computers. Which ones are better? And what specs should I make sure I have? How important is having the fastest processor? Can I do this work just as well with a 2.8Ghz CPU as I could with a 3.2Ghz CPU? Which is the best video card? I really need advice on this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

So then it's not on the "Definitive Collection" VHS or the '95 THX "Faces" one either? If so, then I probably wouldn't even notice it's absence.

--EDIT-- After doing some research, I understand that the line in questiion is "The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations..." If so, then I would miss it because it is on both of my original VHS versions (the hologram letterbox set --Definitive Collection VHS?-- and the "faces" widescreen set).
