Retro Gaming - a general discussion thread

Is anyone into retro gaming?

Does actively playing 20-year-old games count?

Played my first game around 1987 (on C64). I'm exclusively PC gamer, since 1992.

I miss the 90s dearly.

Yes... and not just game-wise.

I do more than just playing. I like to research and document "ancient" games (the ones just as old as ...our beloved Star Wars).

I hate Wikipedia (rules, community), it has next to none screenshots/credits/etc.  Most system-specific websites offer large catalogs of forgotten titles, but usually deal with abandonware (ROMs) and you never know if they disappear someday.

That's why I turned to MobyGames. That database has over 67 000 game entries, even for old systems such as Sinclair QL, Sam Coupe or French Thomson (bet not many of you knew these?), all the way back to 1970s. I've submitted over a hundred of new titles and nearly 400 entries total (check out my Attack on the Death Star entry). I'm mostly after wargames or simulations (my first gaming love, now divorced), I was never into arcade stuff (no wonder, I never owned a console).

That website can be also useful for a collector - you can build your own "have" and "want" list.

I would be cool if some of you had joined us, if only to chat on the forum, registration is free after all. If would be even cooler if you'd contribute.

Old Star Wars Games on New Computer Systems (was: Tie Fighter Collectors' CD-ROM Works in DOSBox)
Time

Oh, the joys of modern systems... just like it was nearly-impossible to run certain Win95 games under XP.

If your rig is powerful enough, you may want to try with "virtualization" (I hate this word!). Just like DOSBOX is a faux-MSDOS running within your Windows, you install  Oracle VM VirtualBox or Windows Virtual PC which enable you to install a different operating system within themselves (thus making is safe and hassle-free). If that problem with game isn't hardware-related, it should help, because the game will be run under the older operating system environment.

BEAUTIFUL WOMEN NEW RULES IN FIRST POST (NSFW) UPDATED RULES
Time

Salma is a rare example (as most celebrities are overrated) of an actress (and not a Playboy-centerfold-turned-B-movie-actress) who can boast a good womanish figure.

(clickable thumbnails below)

Here I present to you Marina Aleksandrova, Russian actress:

My personal preferences aside (eg: fair eyes), a beauty has to stun a man with her ability to be attractive in different ways:

  • I'm a glamorous sexy vamp
  • I'm an innocent funny cutie
  • I look good even with next-to-none make-up
  • I look great in any hair color you like

Glad to hear that.

* * *

Not that long time ago I had the pleasure to play "Attack on the Death Star" on an emulator. It's a very old game released on Japanese computers, not even Wikipedia has an entry, so I added one here:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-wars-attack-on-the-death-star

The early vector graphics look exactly like the special effects from the movie! Just compare the pre-Death Star run briefing.

BTW, this website lists over a hundred of Star Wars games, dating back to 1982: http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/star-wars-universe

Idea: if only we had Kickstarter back then for our beloved movies...
Time

Few months ago, with all the buzz about Double Fine Adventure and Wasteland 2 , a thought popped into my mind… that we’ve failed with all those petitions and letters, yet all we ever needed would be an official Kickstarter project to fund the restoration & DVD/BR release of our beloved movies. Raw numbers preceded by $ would speak to Lucas’ mind - and I’ll bet this crowdfunding project would get more backers and media coverage than some forgotten video game franchise.

Too bad that those big number successful projects emerged only in 2012, opening people’s eyes to Kickstarter possibilities (media talk about a revolution in video game production, as projects rejected by the industry were picked up & funded by the consumers themselves). If only we had such tools earlier - and some good examples to convince others to using this method…

I am using an old Gravis GamePad Pro. I go through the calibration at the start of the game but I cannot move the stick anywhere but down right.

Does it work properly in the system and only fails in DOSBOX? Is it the only game where it's giving you problems? What are your DOSBOX version and joystick settings?

If Lucas Made an Indiana Jones V or VI would anyone here see them ?
Time

This thread would make a great poll...

Me? Considering that I'm still "Indy4-free"? Of course not. Just as I haven't seen the whole "Young Indiana Jones" series. And I do LOVE the original IJ Trilogy, it's part of me just like SW. It was probably one of the things that triggered my "1930s-mania".

I simply realized recently that the moviemaking style changed with time. Old creators of the originals changed too: they've got bored, old, burned-out... too rich as well. So there's no chance for "more of the good old stuff". And I don't want to watch travesties even for free. A "National Treasure"/"Tomb Raider"-like flick with Ford in it DOESN'T make Indiana Jones movie.

For the PT reboot...

...I wanted to completely re-invent PT by writing the story from scratch, oulining the look & feel, taking someone to expand it into a script or a book and another person to illustrate my visions. So maybe even a comic book (err... I mean "graphic novel") ?

But then I realized AGAIN that I can't profit from SW without obtaining license from LFL and that completing such project would be a GREAT amount of work, a bit too much to be done for free...

...especially with a large portion of fans who would bash my vision (mostly diehards "if it has official SW label, I love it" or "I love GL").

What could stay? Coruscant, esp. at night (as in ROTJ-SE), as I saw it back in 1994 in "TIE Fighter" and fell in love :)

Andrew K. or how to make Anakin's turn a better one
Time

OK, this is meant as an antidote for certain recent stupid posts...

I was reading a historical novel recently (don't ask, you don't know it anyway, albeit it's written by Nobel prize winner) and I thought that the problems the main hero faces could be neatly used in script for Anakin's turn to dark side. (because most of us agree this was one of the weakest thing executed in Ep.III).

Meet Andrew K., a young, brave man full of vigor. It is the time of war - his country faces multiple threats, including internal ones.

Even though he served his duty and that all odds are against him (his country's forces are in retreat), he gathers a team of soldiers who know no fear to make a series of "hit & run" raids on the enemy.

His skills can't go unnoticed. A powerful aristocrat asks for his support and wants him under his wings. The young man sees this as an opportunity (I'll skip all the legal problems which all would be instantly solved by this alliance ;) ), and the old nobleman wants a man with such bravado on his side...

In the meantime a new, powerful enemy attacks the country and makes unprecedented and unexpected progress. Province after another fall into its prey.

The old nobleman ask the young hero to swear, that even in the worst of times he won't leave him. Our patriotic hero zealously agrees, as he fears no enemy and will fight even a lost battle for his country. The old man is very pleased...

During a great party with other commanders and nobles, the old aristocrat announces that... he joins his forces with the invading enemy!

Our hero is shocked... just as are some other commanders, who refuse the oath of obedience to the new masters.

...to make things worse, our hero is given the task of... subduing the "rebelling" troops.

His conscience is soothed, as the old aristocrat explains him his complex plan: he doesn't really join with the enemy, he just want to save his province/troops/resources from the pillage, wait for the moment when the enemy is exhausted by the victorious, yet long campaing - and then to strike to liberate the whole country.

So with the new energy he quells all "nay sayers" who are in fact faithful to the country. But he is convinced that the country is doomed with its current leadership, and that only the plan of his old master may be the only chance to defeat the stronger enemy.

As he was always zealous, he's fulfilling his task with great energy... and ruthlessness. In his eyes - and according to his master - those patriots are traitors!

====================================================

Of course he later finds out that the old aristocrat does this only to gain power - at any cost. He changes sides again, trying to repair all the damage he had done to his country. But that's another story...

What I wanted to say, I didn't want Vader to be a whiny youngster full of angst and fear, killing bunch of children when his mood changes. I wanted him to fall in the trap many countries do: the government doesn't want to negotiate with the rebels/rioters, no matter how good are their reasons, because "there must be order" - and sends troops to quell the uprising. People get beaten or killed. In revenge, the rebels/rioters strike at the government, blowing up sth, then they are called terrorists and treated as traitors, even though they may be true patriots and it is the government who went too far.

Vader should be ultra rightie :D At first he looks like a good guy: patriotic, church going, full of zeal. But his good zeal turns into hatred towards anything that his leaders say may be against things he believe. Even if he - at some point - realizes that things went too far, he only reinforces himself in his resolve, unable to admit "they have lied to me and used me as a tool for their evil schemes, because they saw my unbroken faith".

Fan Film - Dark Resurrection
Time

And not even a single link? I get it, "google it yourself, ya schmonk" ?

"Pink Five" was a good laugh. I had some secret hopes for "Tydirium" but I guess that project died?

Yeah, I also hate all that Jedi-mania that's behind 99% fan-films. Especially that making lightsaber effect is no problem with todays video editing software... and robes looks so cheap - guys in stormtrooper armor at least look more authentic ;)
