YouTube/Vimeo/etc... Star Wars video finds
Time

Have you seen that retro movie, "Wars of Stars"?

I've once used video editing tools to make SW look archaic, but this looks genuinely old, monophonic & monochromatic!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVR881cvEG0

Somebody digged up 1978 PKF newsreel from their vaults (yes, we still had those in cinemas, despite daily evening news on TV, it's also part of my cinema viewing experience) featuring Star Wars trailer with then-obligatory tongue-in-cheek commentary, as they also pasted in some wacky futuristic fashion show!

The Secret History of Star Wars
Time

Thanks, I never knew that Lucas was so strongly influenced by Vietnam war. He used World War 2 aircraft dogfight clips as "animatics" for the spacefighter combat after all (surprising coincidence - fighters in X-Wing games fly at comparable speed to WW2 planes).

Interesting how the "point of sitting" defines the "point of view". The Vietnam war never came to my mind when watching Star Wars (OK, maybe only during the ROTJ jungle fight with Ewoks). It's quite natural for a person with European background to see Rebel Alliance as the resistance movement fighting against the Nazi Germany, using "hit and run" tactics, captured weapons, infiltration, espionage etc. Many of those Bothans died to bring us the V-1 plans, right?

Star Wars: Detours (animated series) - a general discussion thread (Unreleased)
Time

Not even remotely funny by my standard. Looks like something made by a guy locked in his basement solely watching SW for the last 20+ years, knowing nothing else (read: brainwashed, close-minded nerd).

What's even worse, it isn't just a fan-made animation, but an official SW production...

How would a Star Wars reboot do?

Not even the original creator displays this. And he's the only one with the license.

Honestly, back when I had any traces of hope lingering, I considered the live action as a form of reboot of the OT story. It could've been told from a different perspective, side-stories of minor heroes (pilots, spies, smugglers, slicers, you-name-them) caught in the galactic Civil War. If X-Wing and Dark Forces games fared so well, why couldn't we have a TV series like that? Why for the last 15 years anything SW-related has to include some idiot running in bathrobe and with some neon-sword?

Examples? You want something modern, catchy? A story about a young rebellious (pun intended) slicer [that's hacker for us] surfing the Holonet [that's Internet for us], nearly caught by Imperial Security Bureau, saved and recruited by rebel intelligence? Surely such cyberpunkish thing wouldn't generate interest, right? Riiight...

Did you notice that our replies weren't about "how" but "why"?

Just like with cloning. You're like those scientists who argue "how this can be done". While there are many people asking "should this be done at all?"

Why can't you enjoy these movies? Because they aren't HD transfers? Why there are so many people obsessed with display format? They'd rather watch lousy soap opera in crystal clear HD than a movie masterpiece in poor SD.

Have any of you watched black&white talkies (that's how people nicknamed movies after introducing that technical novelty: sound) ? Can't you enjoy them without the urge of colorizing them or remaking from scratch?

In your own words: if you "view Star Wars as something broken beyond repair", then "Nobody's forcing you to watch them". Watch something else then, OK?

Oh, and to PT-lovers and "Nobody's forcing you to watch them": but Lucas' merchandising and marketing machine got permanently switched to PT mode. Even OT related products got tainted. I will never get X-Wing or Dark Forces sequel/remake that'd be devoid of PT influences. So my only choice is to skip Star Wars altogether. Sadly, that's what I do.

Georgec's comment was clearly ironic and made for humorous effect - you might have taken it a tad too seriously.

Thank you for clarifying it. I did read it seriously, after all, people sometimes have so bizarre opinions (like PT being superior to OT etc.)...

Why not remaking Citizen Kane? Let's make it Faster, More IntenseTM! And yeesh, it's black&white, not very HD and Blu-Ray ready!

Let's remake Godfather! So that it's more accessible to GTA players generation! < /irony >

Let's face it. Remakes are fairly harmless when done to relatively unknown or failed movies - or when it's another film adaptation of a play/book/etc. Trying to make a better movie than a widely recognized original/old version is not only bold, but also somewhat ...inconsiderate? Not only towards the creator of the original, but also to all people who loved his work.

We complain about such changes as Han shooting first, and you propose a reboot? Like that new Star Trek movie? That has very little in common with the original? Part of our love has to do with nostalgia and the actors - your idea deprives us from that. Star Wars isn't just some n-th version of the Three Musketeers, that's shot every other year...

If such thing was possible at all, I'd like a reboot of the prequels (because they'd better not be made in their present form, I disavow them). Who will guarantee that those new ones wouldn't be even worse abomination?

One of our early forum members was once re-writing the PT from scratch. I too had a lot of own ideas. If it wasn't for the license, I'd at least team up with a comic artist, to show you my take on the story and visual style.

I just quit smoking!
Time

Dammit, nobody says you did. Yet others do such things when drunk, quite often.

Of course drinking in moderation (read: occasionally) isn't dangerous. The problem is that most people can't control themselves and drink too much, too regularly. And from that point it only takes a small step...

It's also pointless to argue what's worse. It's beginning to sound like: Cancer is better than AIDS because it's not contagious, right? Then horray for cancer, yay!

* * *

Want to make a chick quit smoking?

Many people even today make fun of cancer. I've heard young adults saying "time to feed the cancer" (as if it was that crab) when they go for a smoke. Not every smoker dies of lung cancer, right?

But what's guaranteed is that nicotine & other toxins in cigarettes break down collagen and elastin. Your chick knows those names by heart. That stuff is added to cosmetics. Because those things are in our skin, making it elastic. That's why woman's skin is nicely bouncy (not only in those places). We will all age anyway, but women are obsessed to slow down that process. Tell them they are accelerating it by smoking. Smoking = more wrinkles! Oh, and it's time to go to a dentist to whiten those yellowing smoker's teeth!

CP3S, I've seen mothers pushing strollers while smoking... most people are jerks.

You are supposed to say something along the lines of, 'I am inexplicably attractive to people of all ages and genders, astonishingly charismatic and sadly the smartest person I know, I see it as a curse'.

That'd be a lie. Maybe except for that curse thing.

Of course Warbler is wrong about booze. Alcohol does ruin people around the drinker.

Like Threepio tape dispenser?

There are too many bad/silly licensed products to name...

One of my picks: STAR WARS Monopoly!

You'd think it will focus on smugglers, gamblers and shady types, such as Han Solo, Lando or Jabba the Hutt? Something that actually makes sense?

WRONG!

You'll see Vader buying hotels on the Death Star! In all multimedia glory! Yippie!

And to think that Star Wars adventure game got cancelled by LucasArts! Good luck finding a TIE Bomber scale model kit!
