As if the real crystal skull wasn't mysterious enough... but no, our Crystal Skull(TM)(R)(C) has to be Even Cooler(TM)...

Did you notice how all 3 IJ movies had references to religion, mythology?

Looks like in IJ4 it will be replaced by "the alien connection". Just like the mystical Force was replaced by Midichlorians(TM)... oh well, after all we already have Soviets in the movie, who always considered religion as "opium for the people".

Merchandising! Merchandising! Where the real money from the movie is made. Indiana Jones: the T-shirt, Indiana Jones: the coloring book, Indiana Jones: the lunch box, Indiana Jones: the breakfast cereal, Indiana Jones: the flamethrower--the kids love this one--last but not least, Indiana Jones: the potato head doll.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time
Wow, I finally managed to see the fruits of Adywan's labor of love. As much as I hate saying the "wow" thing, its use here is well placed, for Adywan's work deserves praise. After several months of work, HDD failure and all the stress & sore eyes... you deserve it, man.

Why?

Because you've pulled the trick LFL/ILM tried to 10 years ago. Their attempt left us with mixed feelings (at best). Your attempt revived in us the excitement that Star Wars was always stirring in us, in the old days ("before the dark times"). Even thought my contribution to your project was nothing but mental (spiritual?) support (therefore I feel I'm not worthy to be mentioned in the credits - but thanks anyway it feels cool to be mentioned in Star Wars movie ), I was rooting it all the time (despite the fact that I don't frequent forums as often as I used to be). I saw that not only you really love SW (as most of us do), but you really have that subtle sense of knowing what to do - what is better left unchanged and what needs to be fixed - and in both cases you can explain why. This is the difference between you and those new LFL guys - they were simply changing things "because we can".

After watching your edit it became even more striking to me how their edits were often out of place (like e.g.: how Vader's arrival at SSD is copy&pasted in TESB finale). I mean your final product is more seamless than theirs - and we have to take into account the fact that they had the technology available (yes, that was 10 years ago, but digital compositing and 3D meshes could be successfully used back then, thank you), extensive archives and huge resources as well (editing facilities and $$$), while for you it was "just" a non-profit hobby project.

What does it mean, did they simply made a rush job? Were there no people who actually love the movie and know what's best for it? Did they simply lose the subtlety after all that "faster, more intense" years?

Isn't it sad that we can only get well thought and thoroughly developed products from fans, who can't be paid for their work and have limited resources, while the companies who have the license and resources at hand can only provide us with "rushed", unfinished or otherwise unsatisfactory products? I was drawing such conclusions after I started playing with the idea for a new SW game, which I cannot realize primarily because of the license problem.

Maybe the should've start hiring fans?

I'm not very much into the fan-edits thing (so far I've only seen yours and Jambe Davdar's fan-doc -which for me doesn't count as edit but as documentary movie). It's often like repeating Lucas' error - if the movie can be "customized" and people start "add this, add that" we end up with 483 versions of SW Everybody has his/her own taste and so do I. So of course: there were moments in your edit where I agreed completely with your choices, or where I was pleasantly surprised by things I wouldn't have thought about before, on the other hand there were also things I didn't like very much or where I preferred the "old school look" of the unaltered original. But when viewed as a whole thing, your edit passes the test. I would even say that from now on if I'm going to watch any special edition of Star Wars (how many we have now, the '97, '04 ...? they altered it with each DVD release...) I will choose yours.

To sum up what I said - once again, thank You for spending so much time to bring us so much joy.

indie game dev. vs LucasArts - legal dillema
Time
They won't accept "any unsolicited material", we've already discussed this here on the forum, I gave the quote from LEC website.

Miker71, I know that you wrote that with good intentions, but if you look at it from another point of view, it's just as if you told all those people dissatisfied with OOT release on DVD "Guys, if you're so upset, why don't you buy some other sci-fi movie, like Star Trek or Forbidden Planet?" Besides, I'm not a big sci-fi fan.

Erik, you know what - if this game was to be made and if we had decided to use graphical interface I'd ask you for permission to use Engli-Besh.

Damn, this sucks, I can't buy good SW game (because they don't make great SW games anymore) nor I can make my own... yet another thing that tells me to close the book entitled "Star Wars", put it on a shelf and never open it again.

Yeah, that's exactly what we agreed upon with this guy, but I'm asking - then what about fan-made content that is accepted? What may be accepted then and what can't? Why "Pink Five" movie is OK, even if it uses original movie material being edited-in? Why "Star Wars Online" game thrives?

Would a proper disclaimer including the proper copyright and trademark information (Star Wars(TM)(R) and Ackbar(TM) and Alderaan(TM) and Bacta(TM) and Bothan(TM)..... and Zaarin(TM) are the trademarks of LFL.... etc., you know ) help in any way?

indie game dev. vs LucasArts - legal dillema

The subject is old, but I'm getting back to it as I recently spoke to a game developer about his new project.
He already made a few very addictive text-based (or should I say: roguelike) games so far and we wanted more.
He was fishing out ideas from a forum and one of them was making a game set in Star Wars universe. He said he loved the idea, but was really worried about legal issues. So far all his games are freeware and I assumed this for this new game as well, but he replied that even fan-made games used to be "killed" by LucasArts (LEC) and that he doesn't want to receive "Cease and Desist" letter from them.

I fully understand this - the franchise can be sometimes a curse - but on the other hand I started to wonder, how is it possible that LFL is actually (and recently this is even stronger visible on the official website) encouraging making fan-made content, such as movies... or how such a popular game like Star Wars Combine could survive for years without being closed by LFL/LEC.

Since we have some lawyers here on the forum I'd like to hear their opinion on this matter. Is this guy exaggerating? Is it possible to create a very popular free fan-made game and don't get own website shut down? Or is there no real possibility to accomplish that because of license regulations? What fan content is acceptable then? Are there any "walkarounds"?

Bingo. And that's why I have bad feelings about IJ4. We're not set in 1930s anymore. Let's say that the whole "look&feel" changed drastically after the war.

No Nazis as the bad guys? Soviets would make a good replacement for them in the role of "the scum of the Earth", but... in some other movie! Nazis were obsessed with some obscure and ancient stuff - why would the go to Tibet otherwise? Not to mention their paranormal interests, all of which goes well with the supernatural theme of all 3 IJ movies. Can we say the same about Soviets? No. They claimed that all religions etc. are only to fool people.
Instead of this not-so-probable Soviet expedition we could have remnants of Nazis, who actually fled to South America. Can't you remember all that stupid hoax about Hitler still living in Argentine etc.? And who designed Argentinian jets if not top German engineers? and so on, and so on...
Besides, Germans wear better uniforms - designed by Hugo Boss, after all

If you want to try "Indiana Jones vs Soviets" go play Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine PC game (although I have problems running it on Windows XP).

Darn, we once lost the chance for "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis" movie (instead all we got was the classic adventure game) and back then it was the last call. Today it's more like beating a dead horse...

Ian McDiarmid's performance in the PT (also the OT) is memorable and absolutely enthralling
Time
Funny thing, I recall that I waited for McDiarmid scenes all the time I watched TPM the first time, because I've felt this to be the only link with OT... as the movie seemed... err... quite different ("is that it? is this what I was waiting for all those years?"). It was like "I'm watching some sci-fi movie with a Emperor from 'Star Wars' it it".

Although I would also say that ROTS Emperor is ...an overkill. But is wasn't up to McDiarmid to choose what to say or whether to use saber or not.

I can sign myself under these words as well.

DOOM (game) and STAR WARS
Time
Interested about the influence of Star Wars on classic 1990s PC game "Doom"? I was rather under impression that Doom creators' inspiration was rather "generic sci-fi" and nothing SW in particular, but this fragment of (supposedly) original game desing document (very early one, as you will see - i.e. not many of that was in actual game) proves otherwise.

Star Wars USB Flash drives
Time
OK, I know: de gustibus non est disputandum, but I can't say I like this design. Looks childish to me.

Why couldn't they make the drives look like small items from SW universe? Like code cyllinders (Imp. officers have these on their uniforms), lightsaber hilts or even those phillishave-lookalike communicators seen in PT?

So many people have little imagination, I say.

Oh, one more thing that might be useful
(please disregard this message if you already know this)

Someone mentioned old X-Wing vs TIE Fighter games as a good source of "clean" space-based sound F/X. Another good source, this time for land-based ones (anyone needing those landspeeder effects?) would be Jedi Outcast / Jedi Academy. Since they were made on Quake engine, the *.pk3 files can be simply unpacked using WinZIP/WinRAR to access "clean" (ie. no music in background etc.) sound F/X resources.

Oh well, all I can say, I guess, is that I can somehow relate to what you may feel now... there is some truth in the words that great projects encounter big problems (hey, even George had major problems with SW) and I experienced this truth first hand as well... not so long time ago my first HDD started giving me warning signals (BSOD due to bad sectors) so I moved data to second drive to burn backup DVDs... and shortly after that second drive died without a warning...

To quote captain Taggart from Galaxy Quest: "Never give up. Never surrender". Don't loose hope. May your project see its successful ending.
