Lucas: Madman or Genius?
Time
Quote

Star Wars was not based off any book it all came from the mind of one man.

Umm....that's not entirely true. Lucas borrowed from several sources for Star Wars. Westerns, old Repbulic serials, Flash Gordon serials and the plot of the film The Hidden Fortress. He just took these different elements, stirred them up and out popped Star Wars.

Info: Buyer Beware - ebay seller
Time

If you are a frequent ebay buyer or even someone who buys Star Wars figures from online stores, please beware of this seller on ebay: oldtymehw. He is slow to answer emails, and slow to deliver the goods. I purchased 3 R2-D2 figures and the conformation email stated that it could take 2-3 weeks for the order to arrive. It’s been over a month and still nothing. I called them and one of the figures they were out of and the other 2 would ship within the next 5-7 days. I cancelled the whole thing and getting a refund. I read the sellers feedback profile and they have had a few problems in the past but things seemed to have gotten better. Or so I thought. I’m not usually one to hold past mistakes against a person, but 4 weeks was a little much. When I called and found out that the one R2 was out and the others still hadn’d shipped I just gave up. Requested my refund. We’ll see how long that takes.

They also have an onlie store called Old Tyme Toy Store. I wouldn’t recomend ordering from them either. If their ebay reputation is this messed up I can just imagine what their online store is like. Stick with Cloud City Collectibles. They are much more reliable.

What did we all expect from the Prequel Trilogy?
Time
Well, I have to be honest here. I really didn't get all that caught up in the the whole hype for TPM. I had pretty much tried to ignore it. I couldn't escape it as it was everywhere but I did try to look on the whole thing as just media blitz. Therefore my expectations for TPM were probably a little more realistic. I wasn't all that exicted by the idea of a new Star Wars film. Odd considering how much the original trilogy meant so much to me. I guess something told me that it wasn't going to be the same and therefore I shouldn't get too excited about it. And I didn't. Until I was sitting in the theatre and the opening crawl began. After that, things began to go down hill.

Since I had ignored the hype and reviews (and even though I had read the novel for TPM before I saw it) I hadn't been all that prepared for how annoying Jar Jar really was. On paper, he seemed like just a bumbler that was just a little missunderstood. On screen, he was a pestilence that need to be exterminated. This became true of most of the alien characters in the movie. They just came off as bafoons. But I was forgiving. After all, this movie was just to set up the whole saga and the good stuff would come in episodes II and III (I'm still holing onto a mere thread of hope for ROTS but it's getting weaker by the day).

So, looking back, what did I really expect? I expected to see a film that would set up what was to come in the later flilms. Did I get that? Yes, but it sort of left a bad taste in my mouth. And it took me seeing it 4 times before everything that was wrong with this movie began to really set it. There was too much extraneous dialoge and explanation. I understand the precarious position Lucas is in. Here he has the middle three parts of a nine part saga filmed and beloved by millions. Now he has to go back and tell the beginning three and everyone pretty much already knows what is going to happen. How can he make them more interesting and still contain some plot surprises? From my point of view, Lucas is still trying to answer those questions. With two of the three films completed, he still hasn't made them interesting and there isn't any plot surprises.

The main thing I like about the original trilogy is that Lucas is telling me a great story with really great characters. The prequals just seem to lie there like a $2.00 whore. Yeah you get off, but was it all that great?

Lucas has painted himself into a corner. He knew this going into TPM. It's only gotten worse with AOTC. While I am interested in how Anakin became Vader, how Palpitine becomes Emperor and how the Republic fell, I just thought that this would be a more compelling story. The prequals seem to act like a compass without a magent. They seem to just go off on needless directions and they never really get to the 'meat' of the story or the characters. Lucas himself said on the AOTC DVD that several of the deleted scenes were cut because they were nice character development but that they didn't move the story along. That in itself says more to me about Lucas' view of the prequals than anything else. He's sacrifised character and story to showcase CG technology. It's now all about 'look what I can do and isn't it spectacular!' 'Yes, it is but what you did back in 77 was specatular too.' Would be my answer to that.

I just expected more of a story and didn't get much. AOTC was a little better but not much.

Star Wars Music
Time
Well, there is one thing about the prequals that I really like and that is the music. I like how he is blending established Star Wars music from the first trilogy and ever so slightly sprinkling it into the prequals. When I saw TPM the first time, I was a little put off by the music because it just didn't seem 'Star Warsy' enough. But I have to say, I think that TPM musically is very solid and quite good.

I also like how, just like the first trilogy, TPM music became a template for the rest of the films. Williams came up with new music for AOTC but continued to use familiar themes from TPM in new and different ways. Kind of like how Duel of the Fates was the BIG saber fight in TPM but in AOTC it was heard when Anakin was searching for his mother. Same piece of music used to convey a different mood. I haven't listed to the score for AOTC much, but it seem to be on par with the rest.

I hope Williams can come up with some really good stuff for ROTS.

So whats better? Phantom or Clones?
Time
Both films have their good points and their bad points, but if I have to pick I'd have to go with AOTC. Yes, even in spite of the fact that it contains the most putrid dialog I've ever heard ('I've died a little bit each day since you came back into my life.' Ick! Poo!). Wait a minute. That line alone is almost enough for me to change my mind. Maybe I'm not giving TPM its proper due. Hmmm. I'll have to think on that one.

AOTC is or was, the one episode of the prequals that I was most looking forward to. TPM was a fine beginning, but with Clones I was ready for the real story to begin. I just wish that things hadn't been so rushed. With a little more time the romance could have been played out better and more believable.

Changes in 2004 DVDs
Time
I could care less about the difference between DVD and HD-DVD. If that were the case, then I wouldn't be buying any DVDs right now and just hold out for the HD stuff. For me, enough is enough. Pick a format and stay with it. I'm sick of wasting money on stuff just to see it change again in ten years or less. My DVDs will last me the rest of my life.

And with a new format change there is always the inevitable equipment upgrades. HD-DVDs probably won't be able to be played on regular DVD players. There goes another few hundred bucks to upgrade to that. Analong TV will become a thing of the past and everything will be in HD. Non HD TVs won't be able to view HD signals. There goes another few hundred buck to upgrade to HD TV.

All the while having to keep the old DVD players to watch the stuff on DVD that hasn't or won't be released on HD-DVD. Keeping a VCR to watch the stuff on VHS that hasn't and never will be released on DVD or HD-DVD.

So where do you draw the line? When do you, as a consumer, say "Enough is enough? I'm sick of switching formats!" Well, I have reached that point. No more format changes for me. I'm sticking with what I have. And as I said. I'm sick of wasting money everytime that there is a new format change.

Lucas: Madman or Genius?

I don't think any of those reasons are 'right on the money' so to speak. I tend to look at this like a kid with a new toy. I just watched the Making of Jurasic Park and what they did with CGI and models. It's trully remarkable what Speilberg pulled off. I think that Lucas was just taking the next logical step but he took it too far. The over saturation of CGI in TPM and AOTC has taken the place of a good story with good acting. Granted, I've never thought that any of the Star Wars films were masterpieces in acting, but compared to the prequals, the original trilogy is hands down better acted and a better told story.

I also do believe that reasons #1 and #2 both are playing a big factor in all of this.

I'm still holding out hope that ROTS will bring the prequals to a great finish and in the end it may all make sense.

These will be the only DVD set I will buy but come on HD-DVD will be the best.

Until the next format change.

Since I don't have an HD widescreen TV that really doesn't make that much difference to me. What I have is more than adequate. I've been through enough format changes. First from vinyl records to CD and then from VHS to DVD. Either way, I still have stuff on vinyl that will never be released on CD and stuff on VHS that will never be released on DVD. So, I've decided that after DVD I'm not switching to another format and waste all that money to upgrade again. So, in the end I still won't be getting any future releases of Star Wars on any other format. After ROTS hits DVD, that's it for me.

But if GL did that, what would he have to get more sales for some future HD-DVD set?

Yeah, well I've said before. This set of DVDs and the DVD for ROTS are my very last Star Wars DVDs that I'm going to buy. He can release 500 million different versions in the next 50 years and I still won't bite. The only exception that I would make is if he released the original versoins on DVD. Those I would buy. As for the rest, bah.

Honestly, in my opinion the changing Boba's voice is just ridiculous and overly picky on GL's part. The whole, 'so that he and Jango sound the same because Boba is a clone of Jango' thing is just dumb. Why was this such a thorn in George's side? This to me is a pointless waste of time and money. I'd much rather see deleted scenes for all of the films on the DVDs rather than have the money squandered on an insignificant voice change.

Ok, I haven't heard the 'new Emperor' scene dialoge, but from what I've read it doesn't sound good. I'll have to wait and see.

However, I can point out that Vader obviously knows who Luke is long before the Emperor scene. Remember he says, 'That's it. The Rebels are there. And I'm sure Skywalker is with them.' Therefore his asking the Emperor, 'How is that possible?' seems redundant. Why is he asking about something that he already knows the answer to? This seem to fall into the area of godd idea but bad execution. This doesn't seem like it was thought out properly.

If people hate the SE because it looks too-much like a carftoon, then why hate it MORE when they fix that?

Ok, I'm going to try and explain 'what the big deal is' with all of the changes/tinkering with these movies.

I read this on another board and I hope that I can keep it as close to the original idea as possible.

Picture this if you will. You have a favorite restaurante. You eat there all the time. You love the food, you love the atmosphere. Then suddenly, the owner of the joint fires the chef and hires a new one. The menu didn't change. Just the chef. However, now you begin to notice that your favorite foods don't quite taste the way they used to. It's not that the food tastes bad, but it's just not the same. It's not what you grew to love.

That in a nut shell is how most of us here feel about the SE versions of these films. It's not that what Lucas is doing is 'bad.' Most of us feel that the clean up of the movies and fixing what really needed to be fixed is great. And there are some of us who feel that some of the 'cosmetic' changes and tinkerings are ok. Not great. But ok. Example, the Cloud City windows (at least for me anyway).

I, and many others here, have stated time and time again that we don't care how much Lucas changes the films. We just want the choice to either buy the original versions or the new versions. Lucas is refusing to release the original (and by original I mean of course the theatrical versions of the films that have been cleaned up and no added scenes, Jabba, Luke girlie screem, Jedi Rocks number, ect.) These are the films that I and many others saw back in 77, 80 and 83. These are the movies that we want on DVD. Like your favorite food as mentioned above. We don't want the new dishes that have been spiced up. The original dishes were just fine. We savored those dishes for over 20 years. Now if we want to own Star Wars on DVD we are literally being forced to either buy the new version DVDs or to just go without. That is the big deal!

Ok, the Han shirt thing. I'm a little confused. All I have ever seen Han enter the carbon freezing room in is just his shirt and the wrist and arm bindings. Where did it come from that he's wearing his jacket? From what I can tell from the unaltered pic is that it's just really dark shadowing. In all the years that I've been watching this movie I have never seen Han with his jacket in the carbon freezing room. Maybe I missed it but I don't think so.

Info: I Did It! Completed My Kenner Figures Set
Time
Thanks for all of the congrats guys.

Klingon, there are a few of the new figures that I wouldn't mind having just as a supplement to the original Kenner ones. Mainly, Uncle Owen, Aunt Beru, Tarkin, Leia Slave Girl, and Leia Ewok Celebration just to name a few. However, I have found 40+ different new figures that would 'suplement' my original ones. That's just too many for me to even consider.

Does anyone have any Deleted Scenes for the Original Trilogy?
Time
Ok, here's my take on the whole Stormtrooper/Clone thing. In Lucas' mind, the Stormtroopers are now clones. They weren't in the original film or trilogy. The head bumping was a total blooper that Lucas is now working into the story. It is clearly an attempt by Lucas to alter the OT to better fit the PT.

As for Leia's 'short for a Stormtrooper' line, I had always viewed this as a joke and a put down. Trying to use this as a means to prove that Stormtroopers are clones is (at the very least) reaching or simpy trying to read way too much into something that just isn't there.

That's my two cents.
