An article of lies and disgust - George Lucas talks re the 2004 OT SE DVD release...
Time
I totally agree with what everyone has said about Yoda in the OT. While he's not my favorite character, I think he certainly has more depth in the OT than in the PT. I'm sorry but that scene between him and Dooku is just ridiculous. Yoda was fine in TPM, but in AOTC that duel looks stupid and the CGI is awful. Yoda looks so fake in that scene.

An angry Review of the 2004 OT SE DVD's
Time
Well, I too, think comparing LOTR with SW is pointless. They are two different types of films. However, I can understand why they are compared. Especially considering how poorly the prequals have been done. I think when most people compare LOTR with SW they are really comparing Peter Jackson's style of film making to Lucas' style. And in that I think it's a fair comparison.

Jackson used every trick in the book to pull off those films. The CGI used in the films was there to enhance the story and move it along. However, CGI in the hands of Lucas, and it quickly begins to take over the film and bog it down. Lucas abandons character and story just to show off a bit of technology.

There has been one drawback to the LOTR films. Several of my friends saw the films and when they didn't get a particular thing or wanted further explanation on a particular topic I told them to read the books. To this day none of them has done so. They just think that it's just too much effort to read them. The praise how rich the films are with story, character and scenery. I keep telling them that if they love the movies they will love the books. The films really only touched on several aspects of things in the books. Like the Elves or the full history of the rings and who had them. I find the books to be way better than the movies (especially The Two Towers), but my friends just don't want to take the time to read the books. Too bad for them. I read them in High School and again just after The Two Towers came out on DVD. So whomever said that Jackson introduced LOTR to a new generation is true. However, I think that the sad thing about the movies is now that they exist, people won't read the books as much. It will just be easier to watch the movies then spend a week or two with each book.

So, did he use 1993 or 1995 laserdiscs? that would make all the difference.

Actually the 93 and 95 editions of the LD used the same transfers. So, I would assume that it really doesn't matter which LD set was used. However, since the 95 set was THX it might be slightly better than the 93 set. I have a copy of the TR-47 set and it is really spectacular. My set was mastered from the 93 Definitive Collection LD.

For fun...What would be in your Star Wars DVD package?
Time
Well, for me the ultimate set would include the original theatrical versions along with the final Lucas versions for each film. A commentary track for all three films that included Lucas and other key production folks as well as an actor commentary with Hamil, Ford and Fisher.

Each film would have it's own special features disc that would include deleted scenes, all trailers, TV spots, galleries, and the making of specials that aired on TV. The Empire of Dreams documentary would be split into three different documentaries and each would be 2hrs long and focus specifically on each film.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else that the set would need to have. At least in my eyes. A John Williams commentary would be nice but not necessary.

Perhaps as a mail in bonus you could send away for the Holiday Special. That way, only the real die hards would send away for it.

Changes in 2004 DVDs
Time
I guess I would fall in between the Purits and the Non-Alligned. I want the original versions released on DVD, but I also want the originals to get the same cleaned up, remastered, THX treatment that the 2004 DVDs have gotten.

Some of the things that Lucas had done in 97 for the SE were fine with me. Removing the matte lines and the entire clean up of the Hoth battle, some of the expanded Mos Eisley, and a few of the other minor changes I thought were fine. It didn't change any character arcs nor did it alter any of the plot or pacing. Things like Luke's scream, Greedo shoots first, Vader shuttle sequence, Jedi Rocks were all just silly and not needed.

I'm also all for Lucas fixing the films to his heart's content as long as the films that I saw in 77,80, and 83 are preserved and made available to me on DVD. All that we're asking for is that both versions be made available. Let us, the public, choose which ones we want to be. Don't tell us, 'either buy these versions or go without.' And that is basically what Lucas has stated. Now who is being disrespectful to whom?

A-Are you suggesting Solo and Chewbacca... no, it's too sick to think about.

Hmmm....now there's a thought. Unfortunately I don't have all of the VHS copies that I used to have but I'd be willing to try this. Seems only fair to me. If the films were only half complete then yes, we should be able to exchange them for completed versions.

The OOT on DVD - then what?
Time
I have to say that there is a certain logic in your thinking. Mainly because I'm of the mind set that I have to draw the line at some point inspite of advancing technology. These current DVDs of Star Wars that are coming out are the last editions of them that I will purchase unless the original versions are made available. I've been through enough format changes to last the rest of my life. And as always, there are those things that were released on an outdated format that simply will not ever be released or upgraded to the newer formats. I have records that will never be seen on CD and I have stuff on VHS that will never be seen on a DVD. So along with the new technology, I'm forced to keep working pieces of outdated hardware around just to be able to enjoy something that just happens to be on an outdated format.

It's like old 78 records. Most of those recordings were never upgraded to 33 rpm records and therefore every flea market you go to, there is always some one with a huge stack of old 78s. These recording deserve to be preserved, but will they. Yes. On 78 rpm records.

Yes, I've had people tell me that I can have anything on VHS transfered to DVD. Well, there is a little thing on VHS tapes called a copy guard that prevents ANY and ALL types of transfers. So what do I do? Sit by and watch as the tape degrades little by little each year and when it is finally gone just shed a tear and move on?

The main problem with advancing technology is that HD/Blue Ray DVDs won't be able to be watched on current DVD players and I suspect vice versa. Anyway, I did digress.

For the moment, I say release the original versions on DVD and let that be the end. However, in 20 years time the same discussion could be happening all over again. Personally I'm waiting for the day that I can punch up on my TV what ever I want to see, when I want to see it and not have to worry about purchasing any format. The whole thing would be stored on some kind of computer system and beamed into my house via satalite. Movies and TV on demand. That would be great. Imagine. No DVDs, VHS tapes, records, or CDs to take up space. You just flip on the TV, punch up the menu, highlite what you want to watch, and hit play. Now that is technoloty worth waiting for.

Hardcore, you are absolutely right. Episodes IV-VI are told from the Droids point of view. However, they are about Luke. Since the prequals have come out, yes, the focus of the story has somewhat altered. It is now all about the fall from grace and redemption of Anakin. Luke now becomes a secondary player in what was once a story about him.

Empire Of Dreams Review
Time
I looked but I couldn't find a thread where everyone was discussing what they thought of the special on A&E.

Well, I thought it was really good. I realize that it will be longer on the DVD set, but from what we saw I think that this is going to be a very good documentary to have. I'm sure that there were things that A&E purposely didn't show so that it didn't impact sales of the DVD set.

The one thing that I thought was really interesting is that all of the clips from the films were of the original versions. I thought these didn't exist anymore. Seeing the original opening crawl after all these years was really interesting. I'm just sorry that they didn't show all of it. But I can guess why they didn't. That would make it too easy for someone to re-insert it back into the film. I also noticed that whatever print of the originals that they were using looked pretty good. I'm guessing that those clips were from the cleaned up prints from 97 before the CGI stuff was added.

I wish that there had been a discussion of deleted scenes or unfilmed footage. That may be on the DVD set. At least I hope so. I don't mean complete deleted scenes but a quick discussion on what was filmed that wasn't used for one reason or another.

It was also cool to see some of the lost cut footage.

I wish that Empire and Jedi had gotten more screen time, but again, that will be on the DVD. All in all it was a great two hours to spend watching TV. It definately made me want to watch the films again.

Info: Getting A Little Ticked Off Here
Time

Ok, first Old Tyme Toy Store screws me and now Collector’s Gallery does almost the samething. JERKS! This just hasn’t been my week for online purchases. Collector’s Gallery had, and I do mean had, the final two Kenner puzzles that I needed to complete my collection. Those were the 140 piece Jawas Capture R2-D2 and the 1500 piece Millenium Falcon In Space. Well, I was promised that they were in stock and would ship by the end of August. I ordered them on 8/12/04. Well, I sent an email on Monday requesting if they had shipped by 8/30/04 as promised. They replied requesting what I ordered (I gave them the order number in the first email). So I replied to their request. Today, having gotten fed up with waiting and wondering, called them up. Guess what? The bastards lied to me. They sold those puzzles. They didn’t even bother to let me know via phone or email. After 3 fucking weeks of waiting and being promised that they had them, they up and screwed me. I fired off a pointed email to them after I called and then had to cancel my order. Thank God, Cloud City had at least the Jawas puzzle but once again I’m down to having to find the final 1500 piece puzzle.

What really makes me angry, is in the time it has taken for all of this to finally come out, I missed 2 of the damn puzzles on ebay. I could have had the entire collection by now if these worthless bastards wouldn’t have lied to me. Hell, all this time I thought that I had the whole collection. Now I have to keep searching ebay again!

Sorry for the rant but I’m really honked off about this. So everyone I’d advise you to stay away from Collector’s Gallery.
