Best version of OT non special editions to download?
Time

The more I see of Puggo Strikes Back, the more I'm wondering if it and Return of the Puggo might become my new "go to" versions.

But like every other great OT transfer, it's not available yet =(

Snail-mail between UK and US is frustratingly slow.  (Adywan is doing the color correction of PSB and he's in the UK).  Progress is slow but sure!

The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie. Or is it?

By the rules of "What makes a good movie?", Empire is better. By the rules of "What makes a good Star Wars movie?", Star Wars is better.

I disagree strongly.  Star Wars is a great movie by any standard, and can be seen by itself standalone.  Empire is a feast for the Star Wars fan, however it is rather confusing if you haven't seen Star Wars, and is full of scenes that have nothing to do with the story development (such as the ship landing inside the big creature) that are there just to wow the viewer. You also can't beat Alec Guiness and Peter Cushing as actors, and it is their acting that elevates Star Wars to being a great all time movie, alongside Citizen Kane, Casablanca, and others.  What a joy it must have been to assemble their scenes.

FACEBOOK PAGE & Sticker Campaign
Time

This reminds me of the home-brewing stills that you could buy in areas where it was illegal to make hard liquor at home... the way the manufacturers would get around it was by saying: "this item is for decoration only, do NOT do the following steps or illegal liquor will result! ... (1)... (2)... etc."  So you could publish, "do NOT print out these onto stickers and do NOT stick them in stores selling the blu ray.  :)

Still would totally ruin any reputation we still have, and might even get the forum shut down if the campaign was traced back here.  I highly recommend against it, as tempting as it sounds.

Extremely Silly Website: digital-fanedits.com (Was: Extremely Silly Article About Star Wars Prologue On DVD)

Thank you for calling the factual error to my attention. I have executed a simple revision that corrects the error and produces a more effective and truthful article.

In June, 2009, Anti-Matter released his first fanedit title, Star Wars Prologue. Following several lackluster 3-in-1 cuts, it was the first critically-received Star Wars prequel trilogy edit published into the fanedit community, sparking almost instant, insolent condemnation from competing fanedit websites that continues to this day.

God, this is hilarious.  I don't think the Monty Python team could have written a funnier response, and so quickly!  This guy's good.

I've often thought that if we ever get organized enough to have an OT convention, we should invite kenkraly to be a guest keynote speaker. Now I'm not sure, maybe we should invite anti-matter instead.

Deleted scenes on the 2011 BD...
Time

Since I saw SW in 77 four times, my memory of the Biggs scene is quite specific... I remember the reunion making me think I must not have been paying attention earlier, because I didn't know who this guy with the mustache was. It seemed like an important reunion, and he should be someone we had been introduced to before. I also remember the third guy in the scene looked like a friend of mine at high school.  I also always remembered Luke being a sort of mini-celebrity in the hangar before the trench battle because of who his father was, but without that scene it's not the case.

I saw SW in 1985 at an all-night trilogy marathon, and I'm pretty sure it didn't have the scene. I remember thinking that some things were different in the hangar.

I didn't read the novel until about 2 years ago.

The first home video version I bought was the faces vhs tape, and I remember being disturbed that if that scene was missing (and "close the blast doors", and the missed grappling hook, and that Vaders getting blasted out of the trench being extended for continuity), there must be other stuff missing or changed too.  In exploring that issue, I started learning more about the movie, such as the different soundtracks, which later explained most of the things.  I'm satisfied with every explanation now, except the Biggs scene.

FWIW, I saw the movie in 1977 in Logan, Utah (3 times) and in Sacramento, CA (1 time in 1977 probably in 70mm, 1 time in 1983 in 35mm).  I used to be jealous of people who saw it in 70mm, but now I think I may have seen it in 70mm because the theater in Sac had 4 screens that were 70mm-ready.

Anyone here ever try to follow up on this guy:

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

I knew there was a reason I just read here and keep my mouth shut - when the worst comes out of this community it's like a gang of whining armchair quaterbacks who don't have a clue how 'the real world' works.

As far as the technical points you make, I agree that mistakes like this do happen in other releases.  I once averted a reversed-rear-channel error myself in the studio because the folks were mixing it head on and then just forgot to flip them when they moved them to the rear.  Your point of LFL saying it's a "creative decision" rather than throwing someone under the bus is well taken. And I've seen for myself how difficult it is to get a good white balance on an ESB scan because of the nature of the scenes.  The humdinger glitch is a non-issue and I would guess many releases have such transitory flaws.

But the changes that LFL is doing to SW is not at all "how the real world works".  Changing the films so radically and then not restoring the theatrical versions is very unusual for a motion picture of this importance.  Releasing a non-anamorphic laserdisc master is also not at all customary for a movie with such a significant theatrical impact, especially for a company with the kind of resources and capital that LFL has.

I still don't buy that explanation.  I never saw the comic or the "Making of SW".

I'm reluctantly willing to concede that I might not have seen Luke miss with the grappling hook.  Perhaps my "memory" of having seen it is based on other similar scenes in other movies, where it is customary for the protagonist to miss the first time or two.  But regardless of the lack of corroborating evidence, I am quite certain I saw the full Biggs reunion in the theater multiple times mid-1977. Unlike the hook, the Biggs scene isn't an incidental thing, but a lengthy scene with significant dialogue.  I don't expect people to believe me, but I don't mind... I'm confident my memory will be vindicated someday!

Worst Dialogue from the OT.
Time

I like Luke's whiny line about power converters, because he's obsessed with piloting and vehicles, and hanging out at Tosche station was the only thing close to a social life he has.  He obviously was looking forward to any excuse to go there.  Luke is supposed to be whiny, he's just a kid.

By contrast, Ani is supposed to be a Jedi (the best starpilot in the galaxy, and a good friend) yet he is more whiny and incapable of listening than young Luke.

There are some very small things I'd change about the dialog in SW.  I'd make Carrie do another take of "I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board" without the bad English accent. Must have been the result of hanging out with Peter and Alec. Han's line about the Kessel run should have been fixed because the use of "parsecs" makes no sense (it's a unit of distance). And a few of the lines could have been tightened slightly... "He tricked me into going this way" should have ended right there, for example. The dialog in the novel is way too wordy and the editing of the movie greatly improved it simply by removing words.  They could have gone slightly further in a couple of spots.

One line that always bugged me (ESB or ROTJ?) was "it's not my fault!" which just sounded lame.

Out of curiosity, was the Alternate Biggs and Luke Reunion ever released before? I vividly recall watching it... and thinking it odd that the pilot talking to them remembered Luke's father as "one of the best star pilot's in the galaxy and if you're half of that, you'll be all right." Please don't tell me I'm suffering from grappling hook syndrome...

I recall that in the theater too.

From what i have seen one way Tfn'ers excuse how bad the prequels are.

Alexrd said:

That may be. But certain behaviours are as strange (and/or extreme) as the ones who get criticized around here. That's why I asked:

Alexrd said: Why would someone who hates the prequels, go to TF.N, specifically to the PT forum, and see how some users comment about those films?

I don't know because I never visit TFN.  I agree that there are some extreme people here, but I also think it's just a few.  That's true for any open forum.

Midichlorians versus Life Day: which is worse (with compliments to Puggo Jar Jar's Yoda) + (you can't say this is just another anti-prequel thread because Life Day is OT material...sort of)
Time

After very careful and lengthy analysis, I might have to concede that TPM is a slightly better movie than the Holiday Special. However, to the original question, midichlorians vs. Life Day... that's not easy.  Life Day is vomit inducing, whereas midichlorians are icepick-inducing.

Another related question... what's worse, "Jedi Rocks" or "Ode to Life Day"? That's not easy either.

Okay, who actually HATES the Prequels
Time

I was watching RLM's review of TPM last night (it alone makes TPM's existence worthwhile), and was suddenly struck with how much better character development takes place in the Holiday Special than in TPM. For instance, Chewbacca's family members all have interesting and distinct personalities, especially that dirty-old-grandpa.  And I can imagine backstories for each of the officers.  So, what's worse, midichlorians or Life Day?  That's a tough one, really.
