Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)

I'll take all those defects any day of the week! This is going to be like sitting back in a theater circa 1978!

I saw Singin' in the Rain on the big screen last week. Nobody was griping about the dodgy condition of the print, they were simply enjoying the movie.

Well, there's dodgy, and then there's dodgy.  I doubt that anyone in 1978 saw Star Wars THIS dodgy!

I don't really know if I want to see the whole film...

Indeed, let me reiterate that viewers should prepare themselves for lots of grain, poor color, scratches, splotches, grungies, furballs, and other assorted intrusions.  It is hard for me to imagine anyone choosing to watch the Puggo Grande for a movie-going experience when there are so many cleaner options out there.  But it was fun to make, and who knows, maybe there's something buried in there that I didn't notice.

Again, the key phrase here is "lower one's expectations".  :)

How did the final capture of the mono mix audio come out Puggo?

Are you going to use that or use the restored mono mix, or both?

The 16mm film that I used for the video had a mono version of the 35mm mix (which I didn't use, except in a couple of very small patches).  However, I had a second 16mm print (with Swedish subtitles) that had the mono mix, and that is what I used for the audio.  That is, the video came from one print, and the audio from another print.   I had to sync them carefully because the two prints weren't frame-for-frame the same.  I think the audio came out great, but it probably doesn't compete with the restored mono mix.

EVERYTHING in the Puggo Grande came from 16mm films.  Even the extra.

By the way, I just finished it about 15 minutes ago!  I'll first send out a couple of copies to particular people for sanity checking before distributing.

Thanks guys, that will help.  I don't have any intention of posting the video myself.  I'm more interested in sending a few copies out to key members of the forum, and a few more for trades.  Then I figured that someone else would post it to a torrent or something (same as was done for the 8mm stuff).

Speaking of trades, I'm interested in trading for the following items:

  • GOUT with the recent improvements (anamorphic, stabilization, etc.)
  • The Phantom Edit
  • OCP dual layer version
  • Darth Editous / ADM hybrid edition
  • restored original soundtrack
  • Lucasfilm Pwnage edition

I"ll be happy to trade a Puggo Grande for any of the above.

Bring on some samples already LOL,all I keep reading is spechs and such, lets see a sample, because if this is going to be the next X0 then I may as well not capture mine then.
"put up or shut up" and please don't take this as a bash, but we have all read what a fantastic capture something "can" be and NEVER see shit, and I really don't think I have to mention any specific project here do I?

Whoa, tough crowd.

sorry, but just curious if we were going to have page after page of spechs and no samples is all, like I said,I mean no harm,I just want to see something.

Hey, the vast majority of projects here have materialized.  There really have only been a couple that haven't.  There's no reason for us to be anything but excited when a new one comes along.

Star Wars
DISC 1 - Theatrical Version
- Full Restoration by Robert A. Harris
- Selectable Opening Crawl (1977 Star Wars or 1981 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope)
- Default Audio: Uncompressed 1977 Stereo
- Optional Audio: Uncompressed 1977 Mono; Uncompressed 1977 70mm Six-Track (Dolby Digital 4.1 Surround - original was 4.2); 1985 Stereo; 1993 Stereo
- If there are differences between the 35mm/70mm besides the audio, then the 70mm Dolby 4.1 track would only be selectable on a seamlessly-branched 70mm version of the film (only the pre-ANH crawl would be available on this one)
- NO effects tweaks WHATSOEVER (this includes garbage matte removal!)

I agree 100% with your version.

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)

Today I transfered the little Public Service Announcement film that I had bought on eBay.  It was made in 1977, and urges parents to vaccinate children.  As mentioned in the eBay ad, the film was extremely red -- however, it responded spectacularly well to the CMYK color filter in Virtualdub, and now looks fabulous!  Good sound too - although the voice doesn't sound like Anthony Daniels to me.  It will make an even better extra than I was expecting.  Only 32 seconds long.

I've finished cleaning up reel 3.  Not entirely happy with the colors, but did the best I could with it. Incorporated the Swedish segment to replace the portion with broken sprocket holes (with masked-out subtitles). The sudden switch to the very red-shifted Swedish segment is noticeable, but better than the wobbly alternative.

Also finished encoding reel 1.  Reviewed the whole thing on my 58" screen... it's certainly grainy and very noisy, as expected.  I tested a few different resize algorithms, and given how noisy it is, I couldn't tell the difference between any of them.  So I'm just using the one in Vegas for convenience.  After reviewing the encoding, I tried another version with a very light sharpening, which improved it quite a lot (didn't think I'd say that!).  Now I'm reasonably happy with reel 1.  The curved border looks great.  Will start encoding reel 2 tonight.

Added more technical details to the website for those who are curious.

Info: "making of star wars" film reel set - for sale on ebay
Time

I just checked... there are a few copies of the VHS on eBay.  There is even one copy of the Japanese laserdisc up on eBay as well.

If someone here wins the 16mm film (the price is too high for me given my current finances), I'd be willing to add it into my queue of things to do... although again, I doubt it would turn out even as well as a good rip of the VHS.

(Every version I saw, in three different theaters in 1977, included that line, and it always drew laughs.  I still don't understand why it was removed.)

I thought it wasn't removed, it was just a late addition, appearing only in the last mix that was done?

I have to admit that I don't really know much about the various mixes.  Since all the versions I saw in '77 had it, and I never saw a version without it until SW came out on VHS, it just seems to me like it was removed.  I guess more accurate would be to say that I still don't understand why it wasn't included in versions released for consumer version (that is, until the SE).
