RotJ: Japanese Dub Complete Edition (v2.0 Released)
Time

I finished watching this dub today, and wanted to say thanks for sharing it – it’s a fantastic dub! It was a nice surprise to hear the different foley work done for this dubbing, alongside the actual voice dubbing itself.

Out of curiosity, was this dub only ever done for the 1988 Japanese TV broadcast, and not released on LaserDisc, VHS or DVD?
If so, I imagine that the only way to obtain this dub would have been via recoding it onto a blank VHS tape when ROTJ was broadcast?

STAR WARS THEATRICAL EDITION HD

Thanks for the in-depth explanation! This has cleared up some questions I had about the source of audio found in various restoration and preservation projects.

So, “matrixed stereo” is a stereo mix encoded in a special fashion where, if you pass it through a proper Dolby ProLogic decoder, you can get four-channel audio. The Laserdisc audio can be decoded in this way to get true multichannel. The six-channel reconstructions are based on this four-channel decode of Laserdisc audio, and for the past several releases has used a proper professional-grade decoder for that work. We also have in-theater recordings of the six-channel mix, which aren’t an audio source per se, but allow us to know which slight variations of sound effects happened, and when. The LFE is a bit of a best-guess, using some SE when it aligns with theatrical effects.

This work is all based on the theory that the six-channel and stereo mixes were based on the same four-track master audio, which has at this point been proven enough through various audio discoveries to be considered fact. There’s a lot of archaeology in this as well…

Keep in mind that, at the time, only the Star Wars six-channel mix even attempts to match any unique 70mm six-channel content. That may change, but right now Empire and Jedi are more like “tasteful and respectful upmixes” than 70mm mixes – although they may end up being extremely similar to their respective 70mm mixes, due to the shared lineage of the four-channel master.

ProLogic decoding can’t get you literally back to the discrete six-channels on a 70mm print. For one thing, there’s still a bit of channel bleedover that would not be present on a 70mm print, the other is of course the missing two LFE channels*. But these things were done with love. It’s not at all like those Blu-ray mono-to-5.1 upmixes which kill the soul of the original audio. It can be done well, and in this case, it’s been done in an exemplary fashion.

* The original 70mm six-channel audio was 4.2, not 5.1. It was L, C, R, and a single surround, plus two LFE channels. So a four-channel ProLogic decode gives you everything except the LFE. Since 5.1 is far more compatible with modern playback systems, that’s how it’s encoded for these preservations.

For a fan edit I’m doing of Attack Of The Clones, I’m experimenting with altering the appearance of Palpatine in the deleted scene where Padme addresses the Senate.

Since the makeup applied to Ian McDiarmid during this scene not only doesn’t match the rest of AOTC, but his appearance doesn’t match how he’s later seen in ROTS either. I’m aiming for an appearance that is more in-line with ROTS, by removing the liver spots and making him less gaunt and overly pale.

This is just a test so far, however if it goes well, I’ll expand it to alter a few other faces in different SW films.

Any word on if the police can get your computer back, or are they still holding off on taking any action?

UPDATE: Editing halt
so in June my Mac studio which I do all my work on randomly short-circuited even though it was only like 2 years old. Thankfully due to Apple’s kindness, I was able to recover my stuff and put it on a newly bought replacement. But Mac Killer struck again a mere two months later. My Mac was in my luggage bag when I traveled to Orlando aswell as when I left. once I arrived at JFK and picked my bag up to go back home, I realized something; the dent the Mac Studio box makes when in my bag wasn’t there anymore and neither was the lock. I opened it up, and lo and behold it was gone. I immediately contacted the airline, followed by airport security, and finally a report to the police. they located my computer using Find My, but it’ll take at least a month before they can act on it for some reason. so yeah sorry for the big delay to my edits. hopefully editing and work in general can continue in December.

also thanks Samsonite for your crap locks!

BTW: I bought a new MacBook to use as my main machine temporarily. but by the looks of it, it might be more than temporary.
