What about using a 1997 DTV rip?

Is this the rip?

http://www.thx-trailer.com/2/Star-Wars/episode4.htm

I'm not sure. The Tantive sequences seem pretty accurate, and I like the shot of the Falcon's cockpit, but Mos Eisley has a bit of a purple cast over it (though that would be a quick fix), and a lot of the Death Star sequences seem to have the same color issues as the 2004 DVDs. Then again, I'm only looking at the thumbnails.

[update]

So, I think I almost got this thing together. I don't know what I did different, but my encoder went all the way through the first pass, and was even encoding video right up until a little after Greedo, when the video started flickering and went blank for the rest of the film. I'm not sure what this symptom denotes, possibly has to do with the interlacing in the original broadcast (fine time to remember that the HD broadcast was interlaced). Regardless, I watched the first 40 minutes or so convinced I can actually pull this off, most GOUT came and went surprisingly well, and most work left to be done seems to be tweaking and correcting the changes I've already made.

I know some are concerned about the use of a film grain lifted from another film, as well as concern of using Adywan's edit as a color source rather than the GOUT, but I'm taking the time to measure each decision and decide on the best direction. I must point out that I've been the one tempering this thing for almost a year, I've spent a lot of time trying to cheat my way to color corrected Star Wars nirvana using the GOUT with less than favorable results, and the results in accuracy and consistency with Star Wars Revisited is what I really feel is bringing this together (props, Ady).

Jesus, I'm actually quite pumped, I think I'll go out for some more RAM and an external hard-drive, perhaps the failure in encoding is coming from the frame-server within Premiere, and perhaps a huffyuv saved to a large separate partition before encoding and muxing is what is needed.

BTW, happy upcoming 31st birthday for Star Wars, and a happy 1st anniversary of my seemingly endless tenure with this damn thing.

This is a very intriguing idea. Of late, I've been racking my head on this damn encoding crap, and also the difficulty in manual color correction. I ended up giving up on automatically color matching 2004 to the GOUT because the results weren't coming together very well. That's until Adywan's Star Wars Revisited was released.

I neglected to bring it up in any threads yet. Adywan spent a year carefully correcting the 2004 DVDs for his edit. The issue with matching 2004 with GOUT or other laser-disc transfers was the quality of the transfers you were matching to. But with Adywan's hard work finally completed, I, as well as others, can rip it off for their own selfish use (hehehe). I created three separate histograms from Adywan's early xvid release, and the results I got were amazing. I'll eventually post the histograms in the correct thread.

To address your other suggestions, I did get a copy of the stabilizing script for the GOUT footage, I haven't implemented it into any encodes yet, as it causes GOUT to go very slow, so I hope it doesn't cause any crashes. I'm also very interested in adding film grain, I remember the consensus developed that the natural film grain was truly part of the original release, and would be an important addition to a true preservation. This is something I hadn't thought before, and I believe I will pursue.

I'm going to give the HD a little more time before I nix it completely. It's just too damn slow to do what I need to do. I have a few more options left that I'd just be kicking myself over if I didn't give them a chance, but just in case I give up on this bullshit, I have a 480p equivalent project in production.

This one is very interesting. Is there maybe a way to work this idea to be more integral to the plot a little bit? I wouldn't know what to do, perhaps suggest that the rebels on Hoth have stolen the new plans...or simply still have the old? Maybe Han/Chewie/Leia could end up with them, thereby making their capture of much more Imperial interest, instead of Vader abusing resources for his own personal reasons. Obviously we'll find out Vader's reasons later, but it'll tighten up the Imperial army's intentions a little bit. Possible?

Thanks for encouragement. I've managed to get it to encode 99% through the first pass before the screen goes blank in the preview window. Ugh. Since my speakers went dead recently, my Batman vs Superman project is going to take a break for a little bit, so I can dedicate some computer time to trying again.

I found something on the time-line approximately where it stopped working that I thought might've bugged it, so I'll let everyone know today or tomorrow.

Star Wars: Classic Edition by Ocpmovie (Released)

All three films have a DL release. Star Wars and Return of the Jedi for sure were up and available in the usual places, and a dual layer of Empire Strikes Back Ocp said "technically existed", but he felt the increase in quality was scant. I managed to get the DL version of Empire in a trade with him, and from what I saw, I think I agree about the quality, but DLs exist for all of them.

Probably by using the directshowsource("filename.extension") command in an .avs file. If you have avisynth installed, and have the import plugins for avisynth installed in the Premiere plugin's directory, then it will take an .avs file, and by proxy anything that avisynth will take, which is anything, really. I think my email is interpreting my forum updates as spam, so sorry for the belated response.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but the good news is, as of right now, the film has been completely excised of special edition footage, and I have something like four wonderful audio tracks to put onto the final DVD, so things are pretty kosher. I took a break from Star Wars to work on an edit of Batman Begins. The idea was to learn about encoding in an HD format (I've always just made DVDs, with MPEG2 encoding). I've been spending the past two weeks or something just trying to export this damn little fan edit in HD. Using several different programs and encoders.

MEGUI: I use debugmode framserver to export my timeline and import it into this encoder. Gives me a radio drama of my fanedit, with blank video and intact audio.
Windows Media Encoder: I use debugmode framserver to export my timeline and import it into this encoder. It causes Premiere to crash half way through
Xvid/Divx: Export it straight from Premiere. Crashes Premiere very early. Although it worked one time...with sketchy looking video.
ffdshow encoder: Crashes Premiere...or maybe this was the one I got to work...not Divx.

I don't know, every failure muddles together, I'm not sure what the real problem is, I'm sure it's something simple, like maybe a broken codec package or something, then again I just updated to the latest K-lite codec package. Anyway, I was thinking of asking somebody around here with experience in encoding HD files...wookiegroomer, you might have a PM soon...Anyway the point is that once I release my edit of Batman Begins, not only will it be the first ever fanedit in HD (me awesome!), but I'll have the know-how to export a sort of "work print" of my Star Wars edit so I can really start moving this thing along.

OT all the way,

The ANH one is spot on though. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for ROTJ. Good luck with these. Are you planing on doing the prequels too? Again, nice work.

Thanks, I'm not sure if I agree that the art style doesn't match, though I agree it does tend toward the more realistic approach in those panels. One concern I have over those panels though is the way Leia's holding the gun looks like it's more from ROTJ, and the pose of Vader doesn't really feel like it's from anywhere in Empire. But I've pawed through countless comics and didn't realize until the end that the Star Wars comics tend toward EU and AU concepts. I may end up changing those panels, but I'm not sure if I'll have anything to replace them with. Thanks for the comment.

Oh, and I'm still not sure about the prequels. There are straight comic book adaptations of the films that provide many good panels for those three, but I can't remember whether or not there was a lot of space in the frames for just the artwork, but it could be worth a shot.

The Westboro Baptist Church members travel all over to protest (Sometimes in more then one city at a time for days at a time), but the WBC only is reported to have 75 members. Here is the BIG question. Who is funding them? It takes lots of money, and I bet they are working as a distraction to other such HATE groups staying out of the media spotlight. The real scary folks are the ones sending these people the money to do what they do.

We learned about these douchbags in school. THIS is why I think the free speech amendment is too broad. People who go to funerals and celebrate the deaths of innocent people should be locked up. When people take advantage of our right to free speech, then that right should be revoked. They also give a terrible name to Christians.

Of course, you have to remember, freedom of speech doesn't just protect the speech we agree with. But I think it can definitely be argued that they are impeding on the victims rights to grieve. The proverbial right to one's own thang has always been limitless as long as it impedes in no way on anybody else's thang. There's probably something that can be done about this "peaceful assembly" that's obviously hurting people who deserve in no way to be hurt.

Just the American memorial. God damn them. I never knew the true meaning of taking the lord's name in vain until I saw crap like this. After the "Star Wars is Satanic" people, I thought these people were just making sick jokes, I mean it's just so far-fetched that some people would picket a person's funeral. Plus a phone interview on the Adam Corolla Show with a head representative bitch just seemed like she was trolling them to get pissed at her evangelical bullshit. Fuck.

Heath took things pretty far to play the role, I don't think Malcolm McDowell spent any time in a hotel room alone writing down the most awful things he could think, then get himself to laugh maniacally, trying to find them hilarious as fuck. Then again, McDowell's got a pretty sickly rad sense of humor already, don't you think? Maybe Heath just couldn't handle it.

Well if nothing else, maybe we'll at least get back on topic. I'd heard he tried to kill himself a couple years ago, didn't think he'd finish the job, at least not now of all times. Terry Gilliam was apparently un-stoked because they just started on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and were only a few weeks into production.

Now I know for sure I'll be camping outside of Imax at least 2 or 3 weeks before the film opens.

Has anyone thought about setting up a place to put all the covers we make? With almost 200 pages of thread to sift through, it's kinda rough getting some of the best, but buried covers by now. I remember somebody looking for Coov's leather-set a little while ago and nobody uploaded it. The way things are now you have to rely on people to upload a particular set you're looking for, just for you. A Rapidshare account would work nicely, as the small file sizes would allow people without premium accounts to snag the set they're looking for. Or if nothing else, perhaps a section of the forums dedicated to cover sets, maybe a user starts his own thread to preview all his work. I dunno I think with a monster of a thread like this, it may warrant consideration.

I know I have lots of sets from different people, organized by user name, so I could contribute long lost sets and such.

Well that all comes down to alti-verses. AvP is an alti-verse isn't it? All the comic 'versus' crossovers usually happen outside both sides' normal canons.

Aww vbangle, I'm not mad at you, I'm just disappointed in myself . With everything that's going right, I'd hate to think I've done something where I need to start over again, especially when the footage you're working with takes literally 30 minutes to line up your Greedo subtitles correctly. I guess I just need to go back and readjust my monitor, the brightness I found out was a little on the dark side, don't know when I decided the monitor should be darker, but whatever.

The black letter-boxing is not actually part of the source file. When the HD broadcast was encoded, they cropped it off, so the black bars are the black from the empty space as I decided to still work in a standard 16:9 ratio. So it is a true black, and thusly a good reference source for the black levels to match to, even if my monitor is wrong.

I thought I just drop in some shots of the recreated crawl I'm working on. It was proven by the most scrupulous of nerds that the GOUT original crawl is, in fact, the original 1977 crawl and not a digital recreation. Given that, I took a screen of the blank HD star-field from the broadcast source, put the GOUT crawl over the starfield, luma-keyed out the black space on the GOUT, chroma-keyed out the white stars, and boosted the red and green on the remaining matte to give that yellow/golden color we're all used to. The Star Wars logo you see receding in the back is from the Spanish language angle on the 2004 DVD, which does recede at the correct speed. The results I'm getting are pretty good, though in motion stair-casing develops as the matte starts to recede into the back, and I should probably try to bring out more stars in the back, but overall good progress.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/Crawl2.jpg

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/Crawl3.jpg

Well most of the shots are done before and after the Death Star sequence. Battle of Yavin is done, Tatooine, Tantive, Mos Eisley, and most all the other sequences are done. I've even done some cool things with the Alderaan/Death Star explosions, luma-keying and chroma keying out the space from the GOUT, leaving just a matte of the explosion that I put on the HD star-fields which hopefully will look rather nice. I need to carefully run through and manually color correct this thing still (getting better and better at this).

Right now I'm just wondering how many sound-mix projects have been synced to the GOUT. I edited my project to sync frame by frame to the GOUT, so I'm looking for every audio mix I can shove onto the disc. Does anyone know a comprehensive list? I know the wonderful restored mono mix syncs to the GOUT, and the several projects that have come from both Belbucus and Molly (though where these may be obtainethed is a mystery ). If anyone knows/has, it'd be a great help.

Are you going to adjust the black level as well? The black of space on the screen shots look a little grey to me. What do you think?

I think I need to re-adjust my monitor, someone mentioned something wrong with the black levels in another clip i posted. God dammit if I have to go back and do everything over I'm gonna pissed!

So this is my college application essay... (on the OT)
Time

Please write an essay of approximately 500-700 words (typically about two double-spaced pages) on one of the following topics. Check the box of your selected topic.

The 18th-century French philosopher Denis Diderot said, “Only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things.” Describe one of your passions and discuss its contribution to your personal growth.

Okay…

<div class=“PostQuote”>There has never been a time when I didn’t know Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker’s father. There has never been a moment in my conscious memory that I can sincerely remember sitting down and seeing Star Wars for the first time. Since the pre-cognitive development of my very self awareness, I have been aware of every twist, every surprise, every plot turn and story pivot in the glory that is the original Star Wars trilogy, burned and singed into my mind and known since before I ever knew. With such a burning and obsessive passion as this one, it’s no wonder the CGI “enhancements” and shoddy digital restoration job on the 2004 DVD got on my nerves.

As many Star Wars nerds can attest to, the main issue with Star Wars right now is not the Prequel Trilogy (heretofore known as “non-existent”), but the omission in the consumer domain of a properly restored version of the original, unaltered Star Wars trilogy. In 2004, it was announced that these cinematic classics would finally be coming to DVD, this would have been great, but it was also announced that the versions of the films would be the 1997 “Special Editions,” featuring anachronistic CGI “improvements,” and that as long as Lucasfilm had their way, the originals would never see the light of day.

It was a daring proposition: can I reconstruct the original version of Star Wars by deleting CGI elements and mixing in lower resolution sources to create a version of the film worth watching?

The renovation of the unaltered version was simple enough. Whenever a shot or frame contained a moment of Lucasfilm CGI amendment, I simply use my video editor software to replace it with a lower quality, but original version of the shot. About 90% of the time, one would be able to watch the film in beautiful picture quality, only every now and then seeing it go slightly grainy, for need to expurgate beastly and misbegotten “enhancements.”

But a monkey was thrown into the mix. What is wrong with this DVD transfer?
As many nerds can tell you, the film restoration of Star Wars was done by an automated process called Lowry Digital. Instead of a careful, manual approach to ensure the best transfer of the now over 30 year old film elements, a hackneyed computer went about its bombastic way, resulting in an image that was too dark, over saturated, and off-set of its color values in almost every shot. I researched RGB filtering, color pass filtering, and HSV adjustment, an array of tools at the disposal of any digital restoration lab with the patience to do things right.

If I have spoken colloquially or delved too deeply, I apologize, for it is passion that drives me to impress upon the reader the sense of the journey it takes to endure a venture such as this. Imagine the reaction one gets when they tell their friends they have found a new Avisynth frame-serving function that will automatically match one source’s color, hue, and RGB values to another source’s histogram graph, making the color correction much easier during the Death Star sequences. I cannot blame them for the blank stares.

There is not a moment in time I can remember a first time with Star Wars, but there is indeed never a moment in time I know I will forget it. The experience a project like this affords me is indispensable. Wanting to be a filmmaker, my knowledge of non-linear video editing has not been as vast as it has after this project. A 20 minute student film is not so daunting a task as it is before you completely restore a two hour science fiction classic. My ability to color correct my films, edit sequences, and tell my story has never been so finely crafted. My endeavor to save the films I love has in turn saved my own. And though I may never make it big with a smash hit like Star Wars, I at least know the restoration work on my films will look incalculably better than anything you could pull off the shelves at your local video store with the Lucasfilm logo on it.</div>

It’s exactly 700 words, fudged some facts a little bit for humor and/or clarity. This is probably a real gamble, so it’s too bad I already sent it out. If it’s way too far over the reader’s head, they’re going cite it as “unclear” and say I can’t make my writing clear and are therefore not a very good writer. But if the reader “gets it” then this is fucking gold. It’s basically one big set-up of long, wordy, esoteric terms that lead back to the same two word punch-line, “Star Wars.”

I thought I’d share it, kinda relates to some Star Wars issues. Hope you had fun reading it. Oh yeah, and guess what I put in the “quick takes” section that asked what the best movie of all time was? That’s right. 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Not only is he in the movie, but his role was super secret for a very long time. Many speculated he would be playing the future Riddler, but nothing was ever confirmed. From the latest semi-confirmed rumors, we now know his character's name is Mike Engel. He's a reporter who finds out Batman's secret identity and apparently tries to get it into the paper. He idolizes Bruce Wayne and owns a Lamborghini just like Wayne (the source wonders how the hell he could afford one on a reporters salary, so is speculative).

Strange name "Engel." You can manage to get the anagram "enigma" out of the full name name "Michael Engel" and end up with a lot of extra letters, so I guess this isn't one of those fun movie puzzles. But with how super secret his character name was kept for so long it's like...what the hell? Who is he really supposed to be?

For anyone who didn't get a chance to see I am Legend at Imax, the first six minutes of the film have found their way to YouTube.

It's like the bank robbers all graduated from the Chicago School of Cliché New York Thugs (CSC). Man, like seven people all die in the first six minutes. Loved the shotgun toting banker. I loved hearing Ledger's voice behind the mask, then he sticks the grenade in the guy's mouth. It was so Joker when it goes off. Arrrgh, I dunno I want to like it so bad, but IMO I think we might see some real crappy acting from some of the ancillary characters.

I apply a poster edges effects to get a harsh outline onto the image, I take up the brightness to about 10 and the contrast to about 30, then put a cut-out filter over the whole thing, and get results like this:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/turbolaser-c.jpg

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/moseisley_c.jpg

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/DledRhapsody/tiefighetsr_c.jpg

I got it off a guide online somewhere, can't remember. It does produce a pretty good looking effect, but not as "drawn"-looking as the comic scans I've been finding.

It's hard finding art that matches comic to comic. I really like the image in the top corner I got going, but the other OT shots I found sifting through some of the graphic Star Wars novels don't match up in art style. I found rightous caps though, will post with more progress.
