Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)

"Mike Gallo: Obviously the color red is a traditional color of Dark Jedi or Sith Lords, but those guys aren't really subtle anyway. You will run into other characters with lightsabers of course, but the colors aren't really tied to anything specific."

"I always get what color my class should have. Blue for the Jedi Gaurdian Green for the Jedi Consular Yellow for the Jedi Sentinel Those are all the normal classes for any prestige classes I would do Silver,Cyan,Purple,Orange,Verdian and Bronze. Sincerely, Revan466"

Well, this is insane! Damn you, Star Wars universe!

from my google searches i'm finding that this might be connected to the knights of the republic video game; it's an interesting ranking system. Some of you who've played the game may know more than I do about it. Of course we all know that originally only two colors existed, blue and red; but because luke's blade dissapeared against a blue sky in rotj, it was changed to green.

I don't think I like the idea of re-rotoing lots of different colors for lightsabers. for one it's a lot of work and it'd make the whole battle seem too much like a skittles commercial. It also might defeat the idea that a specific color is significant in some way. The most obivious being that red is for sith and blue/green/pimp-purple is for jedi.

I didn't know they changed Luke's saber in RotJ from blue to green was a production decision! But that kinda goes back to the old rule of thumb for Star Wars: Any production decision may be explained later as an intentional artistic decision, ie--the Obiwan Kenobi and Darth Vader lightsaber battle explanation, the idea they were "tired old men" or whatever, and that's why they weren't jumping around like Jedi jumping beans like in RotS--stuff that's been shoved down our throats like that. If you read about different colors going to different classes from George Lucas; it's bullshit.

Allright--good point about the skittles, but you can get around a tasty rainbow look with the color choices. You don't need to go Red Green Yellow Blue Violet, you could go with some more unique colors. Going back to KOTOR again, there really is no rhyme or reason to anyone's lightsaber. Color just depends on the crystal used in the hilt--at least that's what I was always told.

How do people feel about LSmaker for rerotoscoping lightsabers? maybe I'll volunteer myself for the job (that's a maybe, damn that'd be a lot of work!).

I posted this idea somewhere else, but this is a more appropriate place for it:

For number 1 on your list, would the same person willing to rerotoscope Windu's saber be willing to do something similar to a lot of other people's lightsabers in Episode 2 and 3? A stupid little thing about the prequels is they kept putting things that were awesome and incidental in the OT into a formula in the PT.

"Darth" was cool and incidental in the OT because there was Darth Vader, but that was it, in the PT any John Q Badguy is named Darth Something-or-other: Darth Maul, Darth Sidious, Darth Douchebag, etc.

Okay off topic, that's just another example, the example I'm bringing up is lightsabers. In the OT, it's cool cause really there's only one bad guy lightsaber and it's Darth Vader's and it's incidentally red. And also incidentally we only see three other lightsabers the entire rest of the trilogy and they're Anakin's, Obiwan's, and Luke's--and they're blue, blue and green incidentally. In the PT it suddenly becomes a formula that good guys get a tough choice between blue or green and bad guys gotta have red. In the Star Wars expanded universe, like KOTOR for example, there's much more of a spectrum of color to the things. It'd be cool to see a sea of variety in some of those shots of everybody flexing their saber skills.

King Kong: The Shorter Version (Released)
Time
An hour shorter? and it's still over 2 hours long?

Hated that movie--I sat through it wanting to like it, and a lot of parts I did like, the boat scenes I liked--anything the writer character was involved in was great. Though I agree, the love story was just stupid, maybe toning it down might bring out this "friendship" theme others have claimed existed, but I really thought it was just a bad love story. To me, the whole thing looked like another Titanic.

someone brought up the green screen version of Sin City. Does anyone think it's at all possible to slow down the video from the DVD while keeping the motion smooth enough to work with? The film is apparently sped up about 800%. I just bought the special edition DVD so right now I'm all freaking excited about anything Sin City.

Or maybe an edit using the comics as the video on top of the audio! Has anyone brought that up yet?

I was running into real problems picking music and keeping the tension up, particularly with the lasers scene. Then, I began to realize that it’s so full of “action” and fast shot after fast shot, it actually holds up the pace. I’m considering removing the lasers scene and going straight to the torpedo. Those shots are excessive anyway, in my opinion, whereas the torpedo scene is more functional and something they would have done a few decades ago.

OMG, are you talking about that damn scene between Obiwan's Jedi Starfighter and Jango Fett's (Marlow Fett's?) Slave 1 through the asteroids? Anything between Obiwan and Jango through that whole movie screamed "BUY OUR VIDEO GAMES!" Definitely keep in the laser scene--it's the only really cool and intense and not excessively over done and self-indulgent part of the entire chase. What you should cut out, if you haven't already, are those stupid blue reverb bombs that drop out of the ass of Slave 1, what the hell are those supposed to be? It's a real quick fix of cutting in the middle of Jango's line "And we'll have a couple of surprises for them" to the shot looking out the cockpit window as they enter the one asteroid.

I tried this editing thing once on my own with Episode II and cutting out any of the buy-our-video-game moments between Jango and Obiwan turned out great.

You're right. Oddly, I've read more about the film than I've actually seen it, and as such, I've read more about that line than I've actually heard it. In reviewing the scene last night after I had posted -- I realized that "fucker" was more appropriate given Batty's anger. I always thought of the line as someone meeting his maker -- his father. In that sense, it seemed better, but contextually, "fucker" does works better.

It's great coming here and discussing films with people who care as much as I do

Can we take a japanese track for the Niemodians and modulate it (or whatever) to sound like the Duros in the cantina? I think that would provide a nice bit of (small) continuity.

The reversed language track was something that always bothered me about people's edits of the prequels too. I think in Return of the Jedi they talked about how they first wanted to reverse an African tribal language for the ewoks, which of course sounds lame. Failing that, they simply reordered the syllables to create an incoherent speech pattern we all know as the ewok language. I'm actually not sure, it might just be my own great idea. The only problem is the background music and ambience that--whether you modulate it, reorder it, or reverse it--will show up under the Neimodian dialogue you create. This was something I ran into when I tried to re-edit the prequels.

But how do you "partially" blow up the Death Star?

Why don't you re-edit the movie so there's only one death star the whole time? The Death Star 2 battle could be their first try, from a base on Hoth, while it's still being built, but the Death Star's ground assault pushes them out, and the Millenium Falcon escapes into the Asteroid field, and ESB as per the original film. Then they have to go to Endor to destroy the shield generator after being rescued from Jabba the Hutt and the fleet attacks the completed Death Star while Luke dukes it out with Vader inside...or on Couruscant or wherever...It ruins the idea that Luke blows up the Death Star, but it does kinda fix that admitadley pretty lame premise of there being a SECOND Death Star built. Of course ROTJ was a really cool movie, but I mean come on you know? "Ooops, if at first you don't succeed Vader!!! Try and try again!"

I dunno, another idea

I was checking out the Spiderman movies this weekend and saw there was a blooper reel on the DVD. So I thought it would be funny if someone reinstated the bloopers into the film. Just cut in the shot with the blooper, and just move on with the story after the shot's through:

"Allright, Uncle Ben, I think I understand what you're getting at. But I need to go."
"Wait, Peter."
"Yes?"
--cut in--
"Remember: With great power...comes great responsi--phhtht! Oh my God, I couldn't get through that--(laughter from the set)--Hey what? Hey what? Toby here's making faces at me! Come on! Oh Jesus--lol! Sam, get some kind of not-goofing-off double for this kid! Ahhh come here you grrrr!!!"
--cut back--
(serious again) "Allright Ben, I got to go."
