Things you DID NOT like about Episode III
Time
Yeah, I liked Episode III as well. I find it vying for 3rd place in my hierarchy of awesome. As much as I love Jedi, a lot of that is out of nostalgia. Jedi contains both my favourite and least favourite scenes of the saga. Anyhow, on to Hot Rod. Yeah, I know Sidious had the droid army of the SEPERATISTS deactivated. That does not explain why such an effective weapon was never used by any other parties in the OT, like say, I dunno, the Rebel Alliance, or the empire. Seems to me that such a weapon would have been pretty nice to have. It's just more evidence that George is not terribly good at reverse engineering his saga.

Maybe, but it seems unlikely.

Obi Wan knew of Leia, he just did not consider her a "Hope"... Obi Wan didn't think she could be as effective against the Emperor as Luke was.

Like I say, it's open to interpretation. I maintain that it comes of as if Obi-Wan is ingorant of her existence. I also maintain that this makes more sense.

Actually, it makes more sense that way. After all, R2 is the hero of the series, constantly saving everyone's butts, and he understands how important it is to find ObiWan and all.

I don't think that remembering what transpired before has any impact on Artoo knowing how important things are. However, it definitely seems to me that a droid rolling around with that much super sensitive knowledge in it would be a severe security risk.

Okay, a short list of my problems with Sith, mostly comprised of continuity errors:

Qui-Gon Jedi Spirit Training: Can not happen. For the simple reason that at the end of Jedi, Anakin's spirit shows up with Obi and Yoda. Vader certainly didn't get this special training from the Q man, therefore it contradicts the films.

Padme Dies of a broken Heart: Just lame. I would have bought complications in child birth, internal bleeding, trauma from the force chocking, hell, even smoke inhilation, but lossing the will to live when she now has 2 children? total bull.

Padme dies during childbirth: A repeat? Nope, a continuity error now. Padme can't die during childbirth. Liea tells Luke that her real mother died when she was very young, and she can only really remember images and feelings. to be really generous, Padme could die, at the earliest, when Luke and Leia were roughly2, but more likely 3. And don't use the force as an excuse, that's just weak.

Obi-Wan is there for the birth: Another continuity error. Obi-Wan doesn't know about Leia, only Luke. In Empire he is unaware of Leia until Yoda tells him "there is another". Some will argue that this is open to interpretation, and so it is, but I maintain that Obi-wan seems to be pretty clearly in the dark about Leia's existence until that point and gets filled in by Yoda after the fact. It also makes more sense. If anyone ever found Luke or Obi-Wan, he wouldn't be in the position to give up the existence nor the location of Princess Leia.

Vehicle Design: The ships are cool, they really are. The problem I have is they all look like they come after the vehicles of the original trilogy, not before. I personally would have had the army of the republic using x-wings and nebulon B frigates and such, all looking brand new and well painted. That way, 20 years later the rebels look like they're using old discarded ships, and the Empire looks like it merely got a new military contractor.

Anakin's Turn: Anakin is clearly the stupidest Jedi in the history of the Galaxy. Palpatine reveals that he is a sith lord and Anakin doesn't start piecing it together? "Hey! that means you started the war! You're responsible for Qui-Gon's death! You created the clone army! You tried to have my wife assasinated! You had me sentenced to death! You control the seperatists! You had me kill your own apprentice! you've been trying to turn me against the jedi!" But no, none of this apparently goes through his head, and then when he arrives to find Mace and Palpatine facing off, Palpy lies to his face "I'm too weak!" but as soon as Anakin intervenes, suddenly Palpy is back at full power and blasts Mace out the window? Hey kid, he just lied to your face! not to mention he tried to make you think Mace was trying to overthrow the republic AFTER you walked over 2 jedi corpses. You think Mace did that maybe? You know, if Lucas had just characterized Anakin as a dumb jock, none of this would matter. If the audience just believed Anakin was stupid, we'd be in a better place

Buzz Droids: Okay, neat idea, clearly a destructive and devestating weapon. So why are they no longer in use come the original trilogy?

R2 the Acrobat: Atroo can fly? Wow, that sure woulda been useful in the OT.

R2 keeps his memory: Lame. Just lame.

Vader the thespian: "NOOOOOOOOOOO" Worst. Line. Ever.

Wookies: Their inclusion was entirely pointless. And Chewbacca being there? Wow, what an incredible coincedence. What a small universe. What a bad idea.

General Grievous: Wow, you know you're doing something wrong when the cartoon version of a character is more interesting, threatening and compelling than his feature film counter-part.

Okay, that's enough for now.

Here's a question, and maybe I missed the answer, but I don't think I saw it. What's going to happen with what I'm going to call status? That is, some people are "I am ready for the trials" while others are "Jedi Knight" or "Jedi Master" and such. What I'm personally curious about is, I happen to have a custom status "The Last Starfighter" which while a little silly I'll admit, I happen to be rather fond of, will this cary over?

The Carrie thing I side with LFL and Burtt on. I've watched the movie more times than any human ever really should, and not once has it sounded like Carrie to me, it has always, and likely will always sound like Hey. There's a modulation in the hey, which comes from the word being interupted by the hug from Leia, but that's about it. As for the novelization of ANH being arguably the first EU, i'd say that would be a very difficult arguement to make. Beyond the fact that Lucasfilm's cannon policy considers the novelizations of the films cannon, it's the novelization of the movie. it's not a new story. it has some material that didn't make it to film, but that's true of any novelization, as they're generally based on scripts before knowing which scenes, or portions of scenes, will end up on the cutting room floor. I'd say Splinter still takes the first place trophy as far as being the first EU Novel.

Man, there's so much hate out there for Supershadow. Does no one see that he's one of the greatest comic geniuses of our time? Too many people seem to be missing the entire point. Supershadow is pure farce, and the joke is on the people who believe him, but the joke is also on those who think he's serious. Just enjoy Supershadow for what he is, the greatest farce on fandom ever.

Do they even exist anymore? (the unaltered theatrical version of the Original Trilogy)
Time
I would be inclined to believe that somewhere at LFL there is an archived, untouched copy of the Original trilogy. Simply because the restoration work that was done really requires an original copy, as opposed to a special edition copy. In terms of adding new scenes and restoration, it's much easier to do it from an unaltered original than it would be from a copy.

For me it's not so much an issue of preference as it is historical significance. Like it or not, the SE's occupy a unique and important role in the history of film. And considering it is no longer commercially available and has been replaced by a newer, more suped up version, the film historian in me would want a "complete" set of the saga to contain all 3 versions of the film. Like when you get a collection with multiple cuts of a film (theatrical cut, directors cut, european cut, etc...) For me it's fascinating to see the progression of a film through its various cuts. I may not like them, but that's beside the point. Anyway, just my thoughts on the issue.

Idea: Supplementals - Making Of Specials onto dvd?
Time

I’ve been thinking that what would be super cool is if we could get the old Making Of specials on dvd. They’re hard to come by, but they are available on LD on ebay sometime. I found an auction today that has all three of them at one go, thought some of the preservationists out there might be interested, so here’s a link: Star Wars Making Of Specials

If it’s not cool to post live auctions, lemme know and I’ll remove the link, just thought some people on here might be interested.

Did you just add a "$" to Lucas' name? If so, that is beyond pathetic.

Yeah, let's bust on this guy specifically for that, I'm sure he's the only person in the history of time to come up with that little gem of subversive humor. Honestly, what's more pathetic? An admitedly lame joke on the spelling of Lucas, or going out of your way to try to make that person feel bad about it.

The "benefits" of Anamorphic will be reaped solely by those who are in possession of 16:9 displays. If you're watching these on a standard 4:3 TV, the anamorphic will mean nothing for you really. I'm unfamiliar with the process of making the image anamorphic, so I can't really say if it will be worse or not. Making an image anamorphic artificially seems to me to have an inherent limitation built into it. Whether that limitation translates to a worse picture on a 4:3 set, or merely a somewhat less than stellar picture on a 16:9 display, I can't say.

I currently have the TR47 Trilogy, the Farisght Anamorphic, and the Dr. Gonzo Anamorphic.

I personally like the TR47 transfer best of all of them... on my 4:3 TV. On the 16:9 set, not so much. It's not anamorphic, but it's not as soft as the other transfers, which I suspect might be an issue to do with the anamorphic conversion. That said, it's not a perfect transfer. I'm surprised that the black bars were left in the film as is, instead of being removed with his encoder program and replaced with solid black which would have taken up a lot less space. If I could do it back in 99, he can certainly do it now. All that really requires is going back and replacing the subtitles, seems worthwhile to me.

Farsight. I was really excited about this set when I first heard about it. I even prefered the Farsight Jedi ot the Gonzo Jedi. But, Farsights ANH is just unbelievably bad. By far the worst transfer of ANH I have ever seen. Worse than my old vhs cassettes. The colours bleed badly, the image is in very poor condition. I don't know if this is an issue of the capturing, the source material or what. It seriously looks like it was captured through unsheilded RCA cables that had several power cables laying on top of them. For all of farsights good intentions, the end result is dramatically inconsistent.

Dr. Gonzo. These are nice decent transfers. A bit on the soft side (a problem I notice on the anamorphic sets) but nothing too upsetting. One issue I've had, and this may just be my downloads, but for me, the audio always drops out noticeably during the millenium falcon being captured by the tractor beem sequence. My first download it dropped out enourmously, the second time, only a bit, but still noticeable.

I'm really looking forward to MeBeJedi's set, he's been putting a lot of effort into these, and I'm eager to see the results. I'm tired of watching my definitive collection, swapping discs isn't my bag baby.

Class Action lawsuit?!?

The strongest case to be made against Lucasfilm would have to be on the basis of Fraudulent Misrepresentation in regards to their current release of the OT. The fact that they are marketing this set heavily as the Originals, while mkaing no mention of any of the changes, either on the box or in the advertising, is blatant false advertising. When these versions make it to your video store shelf next to the special editions, what's going to happen. If someone rents the "original trilogy" over the special edition, then gets home and discovers that they aren't the OT, who is responsible? Not the rental chain, they didn't package the films. The blame falls on Lucasfilm. What could be gained from persuing this line is a much foggier issue. I should expect very little. possibly just the addition of a special edition tagline to all future box sets and apublic withdrawal of the advertising claim of these films being the "originals", but that's as far as I see it going. It's a fun legal puzzle to ponder though. I've only taken one business law course, so I'm sub-amateur at best, but those are my thoughts on it.

Idea: About De-SEizing the DVDs... We need to Vote on Changes!

I fully expect Mag has much more far reaching edits than merely the additions that have been made to the film. I expect we'll see the trimming of dialogue, possibly new effects for certain scenes if he can swing it, and other tweeks to bring the entire saga closer to a cohesive whole. Remember, Mag is trying to make a Saga to be watched in chronological order, Episode 1 through 6.
