Did MAD MAX have an original track on Laserdisc in PCM? Glad it mentions which Blu-ray release to use, since I do have quite a lot. I'd rather use the original MGM release instead of the 2013 WB one.

Fixed and did you mean the original Australian or American soundtrack. I thought the Mad Max dvd was the first time the original Australian was available in the US. We just have the sequels preserved.

So funny thing, I was working on North By Northwest last night and I found a section were the Blu-ray's 5.1 is missing some sound effects. When Cary Grant is escaping from the hospital outside on the balcony the 5.1 is missing some sounds of his feet and struggling moving balcony to balcony. It occurs around 1 hour 54 minutes

But it is present on both the Criterion and MGM laserdiscs. Nothing exciting and it is only a few seconds but interesting nonetheless.

I can't vouch for all of them, but I'd say the goal is to get something that more closely resembles the theatrical audio. That's right, the hope is that many of these soundtracks are closer to the original movie's soundtracks with less remixing and changes made. For example, what I'm working on right now, North By Northwest was released in mono durning its original theatrical run which is preserved on the old laserdisc. The DVD and Blu-ray are only a 5.1 remix. So this is a chance to watch the movie with something that is hopefully closer to what they heard in 1959. Same with more modern films, Star Trek II was in Dolby Stereo in the theaters and on laserdisc but on dvd and blu-ray, 5.1. By syncing it you hopefully get the theatrical sound.

So over the last weeks I completed the syncing of the Temple Of Doom widescreen laserdisc to the TOD blu-ray and Hunt For the Red October's widescreen laserdisc to the HFTRO blu-ray. PM me if you want a copy.

Right now, I am working on North By Northwest. I am syncing the Criterion Mono and the MGM Stereo/Mono laserdisc to the Warner Bros Blu-ray. I should be done at the end of this week. After that it will be The Good, The Bad and The Ugly's Mono laserdisc synced to the Italian blu-ray.

Hey Everyone,

I noticed that a few people around here are are trying to preserve old soundtracks from laserdiscs and then sync them to the latest Blu-rays. I thought it might be nice to have a sort of master list of what has been preserved/synced and what is being worked on. The goal of this thread is to be the answer to the Re-mixed audio tracks on video releases thread. We are looking at Mono soundtracks, Stereo soundtracks, Dolby Stereo, 70mm mixes, soundtracks that contained dialog panning, mono surrounds, original far-field cinema mixes, DTS cinema disc mixes, etc. This would not only cover laserdiscs but any sources (DVDs, VHS, DTS discs). Speaking of ET, I've been meaning to revisit Close Encounters for a long time. If I got the 30th Anniv. BD would the mix there be anything like the theatrical? I know the original 70mm LFE was sourced for the Collector's Edition LD (via lddb forums)

AF, GBU could be saved by adding the LD PCM to the Mondo transfer and then replacing the edits in the torture scene and the few other tiny bits to conform to the 161 minute US/International cut. The Italian exclusive scenes would remain Italian mono for the longer cut, with the MGM SE exclusive scene being the grotto which was never shown outside the premiere.

From everything I've heard the blu-ray is the same as the laserdisc except the stereo surrounds. I have the laserdisc and it is on my list to copy and sync so we can compare. Same with GBU (my favorite film). I have the laserdisc and the Mondo but getting in sync will be a task. I want to get a little more experience syncing up soundtracks up before I tackle GBU. I just finished my first. I synced up Temple Of Doom's widescreen soundtrack to the blu-ray and so far it sound pretty good (big thanks to Jonno for helping test the finished track)

Anr MM2 is another example: who can be sure that the BD has not the right colors that the director has always intended? To me, clearly the BD has wong colors (as "The Thing", "The Matrix" and many others) - this is SO obvious... even with no official reference, or, at the contrary, the studios and/or directors keep telling us that these BD has "the right color grading that the movie should have in the theaters but never had on video because old technology didn't allow that before" (Lucas docet) - when we (educated videophiles) all know that is a big fat lie... OK, I should start a separate thread for this, don't you think?

Well, baci to MM2: I have the LD but not the BD; if someone would kindly agree to send me the 1:1 rip, I'll be more than happy to spoRvify it! But take into account I'm involved in many projects right now, and don't know when I'll start the MM2 one.

Last thing: what about the other Mad Max movies' color grading?

I quote captainsolo from the Mad Max 2 thread:

"The best evidence was provided by the original cinematographer on the commentary track IIRC. He talked of having to go to the film lab multiple times to push the colors to get that more saturated look of the desert. That is the intended look reflected on the 35mm theatrical prints, the VHS, LD and DVD issue from a print sourced master. That used a US print under the RW title and slightly edited. The BD uses what is presumably a fresh HD scan of the Australian master, hence the uncut film and MM2 title card. It also is the master so it lacks the intended color timing, making it yet another film misrepresented in HD due to using camera negatives and not replicating theatrical color timing."

I agree with his assessment, it sounds like they didn't color time the HD negative scan. The 35mm print I saw recently was of 80's vintage and was the same color timing as the laserdisc and the old DVD, so clearly the Blu-ray is wrong. The funny thing is that Mad Max 3 Beyond Thunderdome always had the same "yellow" color timing as Mad Max 2/The Road Warrior, which makes sense being a sequel. For the new Blu-ray the color timing is the correct "yellow" same as the DVD and old Laserdisc. So they got that right, probably because they didn't go back to the untimed negative. So it makes MM2/RW stand out all the more since Thunderdome is the right color, same as its always been. Mad Max (the 1st movie) has always had a natural color look befitting it 70s naturalistic filming and seems right also.

Sorry if I derailed this thread, Andrea. I saw the work you did on The Thing (one of my favorite movies) got excited and thought your process would be perfect to fix MM2/RW (another of my favs). If you do want to go forward I have the latest Blu-ray (AVC, not the old VC-1), the old DVD and Jonno's Dolby Stereo Surround soundtrack (which must of been very hard to sync to the Blu-ray since it is a different cut)

It would be nice to ask Carpenter but sometimes directors betray themselves with changes or reinvent the past or plain forget how their movie was suppose to look. I won't talk about Lucas but I'm reminded of William Friedkin's color changes to French Connection. He went all out changing the colors to some bizarre mess but after there was such universal hate, he kind of denied being responsible and a new Blu-ray was issued with corrected colors.

Man I love Carpenter's early work, Halloween, Fog, Escape, Thing, Big Trouble, classics everyone of them. Sad no one makes those kind of films anymore. Did anyone ever ask Carpenter about the color changes in Halloween? I know Dean Cundey (the cinematographer) is suppose to fix with the next blu-ray so we can only hope. Regardless, I have The Thing on HD-DVD, Blu-ray and now your version, Andrea, so I am happy. I choose what to watch.

Also nice to have the Dolby Stereo Surround soundtrack. I'm into Dolby Stereo tracks right now. Ripping all my laserdiscs so I can merge them to Blu-rays (even though synceing is harder then I thought). I got a used Fosgate Model 5 so I can listen to these is "old" Pro-Logic and not Pro Logic II or DTS-Neo. I want to see if I can find any other "old" Pro-Logic decoders. Each had a slightly different way of decoding.

Just finished downloading and watching. Great work Andrea! Just a great effort. Like others this is one of my favorite films so I'm always glad to watch it. I do like the color timing for a lot of things (no pun intended) like the snow being white. Not sure which is correct coloring. The HD DVD and blu-ray look like they used a combination of blue filters and blue gels which would of been common in carpenter's work at the time but I don't know. Publicity photos from the time look like Andrea's version but those are never indicative of the final print. One wonders if the hddvd and br used a different print then the ld? Regardless I love having both versions. Each evokes a slightly different feel/mood and each has as much right calling itself the "correct" color. Nothing but praise from me.

Andrea, I know you are working The Matrix but after that if I might make a humble suggestion for your next project, Mad Max 2/The Road Warrior is perfect for your process. The bluray has the totally wrong color timing. More blue vs the laserdisc and original DVD which had a yellow, more desert like coloring. I recently saw a 35mm print of mm2 and the color timing was exactly the same as the laserdisc and DVD not the blu ray. There is a long discusion in the mm2 thread here but you can get the idea from these pics:

Thanks for the offer - just please wait until the things will be more clear... if you can provide also video along with audio, it will be great, as it's easyer to sync. What about the other two movies, have you them, and do they sounds different from their widescreen counterparts too? And, right because we are here, what about P&S colors Vs LB colors?

I have this LD for temple:

and similar to Raiders the mix isn't as aggressive. Same sounds just mixed very slightly different

only this is PCM unlike Raiders' analog. It leads me to believe that the widescreen Indy LDs are remixed.

Having said that, Temple of Doom's widescreen Dolby Surround Stereo soundtrack is perhaps one

of the best mixes I have ever heard regardless of it not being discreet. Hell unlike the DVD or Blu

mix it has the original dialog panning. The widescreen LD of Raiders and Crusade are pretty good too.

Been awhile since I watched them to see if there are color changes but I can check the p&s of both to see.
