I think there’d be too many expectations from a lot of people that’d potentially ruin the films whichever way they go.

I’d be all in for more personal stories set during the Clone War, I think it’d really do wonders for that time period. We get some of it from the TV shows, but nothing actually good.

But yeah if they want to stay away from the main saga at all costs I think the old republic era is definitely the most logical pick. I really don’t want it to be a Jedi story though, I think it’d be cool to see more Rogue One-like films.

You say there’d be too many expectations, but the Clone Wars has an even greater chance of “offending” people as it is directly connected to the films. And while I love the era there are many OT fans who don’t want to return to the PT, and I respect that… TOR is a fresh start for everyone.

I think about it like the MCU. You have a ton of comics/books/games on the era, and the producers are now free to tell their own story. Most complaints regarding the ST from fans has been towards inconsistent writing (agree or disagree). But by adapting characters you would be more in an MCU position.

Man, the MCU is a lot of things but I don’t think I would ever say that it has “consistent writing.” The less SW can be like the MCU the better honestly (and I love the MCU).

Well, one thing you have to admit is how happy and united the fandom is. A consistent vision is my stab at the answer to that. While any piece of new SW material will divide people. I was convinced Endgame would divide people for providing a definitive ending… but that’s not the case.

I expect this page to boom once TROS comes out. As it stands we really don’t know what the overarching story/theme/impact is for the ST. How much will TROS rely upon TLJ? That will affect how much is cut/altered. What new twists will TROS give us? That could be moved up to other films, and radically change their stories. There is so much in the air- can only imagine this was what it was like back in the OT’s day.

Just without the editing. And the internet. And oh, digital media.

One thing about the Old Republic era I’d like for them to “fix” is to create a substantial gap in technology. They don’t have to ruin the feel of SW, but the ships could be smaller and hyperspace much slower. Space, in general, would feel more dangerous. Although the Jedi and Sith would be greater in number, there would be less republic and empire. If that makes sense.

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

I am also a bit confused towards Rey’s motivation.

I agree with Don in that Rey wants to belong somewhere. An expected reaction for someone so isolated. Further evidence for this:

 • She is in denial that her family will come in TFA
 • She saves BB8, her only friend possibly ever. Her insistence on getting BB8 to the resistance may be due to he trying to help the only friend she has even known.
 • She never outright helps the resistance. She only wields the lightsaber to save Finn, a friend.
 • She asks Luke to “show me her place in all this”.
 • It seems she only wants to know her parents after she is turned down by Luke. Luke’s grumpiness causes Rey to doubt the Jedi way and ponder about her parents once more (the cave).
 • She then develops a force connection with Ben and comes to believe he may have what she seeks (a place to belong to).

All this is building to Rey taking Ben’s hand.

Why would Rey want to join the Jedi? Luke has done nothing but criticize her. We all know the Jedi way is right, but from her POV she just met this grumpy hermit who doesn’t want her. Why should she care about the Jedi?

It seems Rey’s primary motivation in turning down Kylo is because she has friends in the resistance? Like Finn and BB8? But the entire film has been building up Kylo and Rey’s relationship. As for the “she realizes she does not need a purpose, she can make one herself” well wasn’t that where she was before TFA. On her own with no one?

I think Rey would have been a great character had she taken Ben’s hand and charted us a new, bold direction for TROS.

Now she feels more like a missed opportunity bordering “perfect” which is a shame given how close we were. I hope TROS does the best job they can with Rey- if they provide some clarification on her motivation I think the whole Mary Sue argument will finally be over.

Disney released their entire slate for the next few years. They’re going to alternate releases of each Avatar and Star Wars every December (2021 Avatar 2, 2022 new Star Wars, 2023 Avatar 3, etc.).

Makes way more sense now, thank you for the clarification. I went back and clicked the link in that article and see they pushed back Avatar 2 yet again. Anyone remember when it was going to hit theaters December of 2015 (the release window Episode VII moved right into) and was then slated for 2016 until Rogue One stared it in the face and it moved again?

I wonder if WB releasing Dune only a month earlier had anything to do with Disney pushing Avatar 2 back an entire year. Hopefully audiences give it a shot, I’d love to see the rest of Frank Herbert’s main series adapted for the big screen by Denis Villeneuve. I mean, we got five Michael Bay Transformers movies, didn’t we?

Meanwhile, I see Disney’s got a Marvel movie, a Pixar movie, a live-action Cruella movie and (via Fox) Spielberg’s West Side Story remake, all in those last two months of 2020.

Speaking of Spielberg, Indy 5 is still slated for July of 2021, and now that we know there won’t be another big screen Lucasfilm production released until a year and a half later I’s say the chances are good they actually hold to that release date this time.

The Avatar Sequels always make me chuckle. The first one was a huge success, but since 2008 a ton’s changed. We witnessed the rise of the MCU, and with it the “cinematic universe” which we now see with DC and Godzilla. Star Wars and Marvel have become insanely profitable. Avatar 2 should have come out in 2012 or something, back when it was still popular with the public. Once you have two great movies you got a franchise… but as it stands most people will look at Avatar 2 as just another “two-decade late sequel” like Independence Day or Blade Runner. One of which was good the other not- both of which struggled at the box office.

Concerning Lucasfilm- I am annoyed they are stuck to Star Wars. I know this is an unpopular opinion for a star wars site… but George Lucas created his two big franchises from nothing. Why does his company have to stick to just Star Wars? Why not make a new franchise and market it as the “third Lucasfilm property” alongside SW and Indy?

Or just make some Indy movies. How they recast Solo before they made another Indy is beyond me.

These are the quotes from George Lucas on the sequel trilogy.

I might be digging too deep into this but it’s kinda funny when you think this way… just for the record, I don’t think there’s any blood between Lucas and Disney, I think he might not enjoy the current direction Star Wars is going, but he isn’t salty about it. If Disney approached him for Episode 9 he’ll help motivate them… towards his perferred direction.

THE FORCE AWAKENS:
“I think the fans are going to love it. It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.”

Could be interpreted as fan service. It is very much what the fans want, although not necessarily what he wants. From Lucas’s perspective, the OT was his story but was blocked and altered by studio execs and producers. George Lucas expected the fans would love his unblocked vision of a PT, but was wrong, and now has come to believe the fans are looking for more of the OT. We can all agree TFA has many similarities to the ST (for better or worse I won’t get into), therefore, Lucas was correct in his analysis. This was what the fans were looking for.

THE LAST JEDI:
He thought it was “beautifully made.”

Indeed, The Last Jedi was beautiful. Best cinematography of any SW movie. Concerning the storytelling… that is up in the air, but Lucas at no point mentions it. Therefore his analysis is (once again) perfectly accurate- even if at first glance we think it translates into “I love it”.

C’mon even if you hate TLJ, that’s beautifully made.

I actually love The Last Jedi, and the sequel trilogy overall. I think it’s an amazing entry to the Star Wars saga and just great overall. I also don’t necessarily think that Lucas isn’t happy with Disney. Not necessarily with them refusing his story treatments, though.

Maybe it just comes down to our own opinions. You are optimistic (which is better tbh), I am pessimistic, and we each think George thinks our opinions. I suppose it’s a tossup.

Shouldn’t Cat and Mouse be before the Clone Wars film?

Yes, it should and in this film’s lore it is. But the film is about Ahsoka and Anakin’s relationship, and Cat and Mouse doesn’t involve Ahsoka. And though the Clone Wars Movie gets real bad once the Hutts show up, the Christopher scenes are done pretty darn well. They open with Anakin and Obi-Wan in peril but still show Anakin doing something reckless yet genius. Then Ahsoka shows up, and the story is clearly focused on Anakin not wanting to train her.

Cat and Mouse, while a good episode, is episodic in nature, with Trench not appearing in the story after. The only purpose I could see is using it as an extended intro for Anakin, but again the TCW movie does a fine job doing it and the story is already a bit disjointed considering the main plot is Bane’s search for the Holocron.

Zachary VIII said:

Very interesting. How closely will the timeline of this cinematic universe follow the canon timeline of TCW?

I’m not restricting myself to the canon timeline of TCW, however, I will keep the general trend of the show. Ahsoka or Ventress won’t die, because they have to live on to future media. But if the character or episode is exclusive to the show and doesn’t have many far-reaching consequences, I may choose to change it. But only if it suits the story.

For example: Cad Bane is the main antagonist of the edit, although there are about 40 minutes or so of fighting in Christophisis to introduce Ahsoka and Anakin. So I need to make Bane a strong force once we get thru Christophsis, and I figured the best way to do that is to give him more screentime.

Bane’s most popular episode is the one-off “Hostage Crisis” which sold many on his character. There he raids the Senate Building. Now in “Holocron Heist”, the episode that also features a rift between Ahsoka and Anakin and is, therefore, a perfect episode to draw from, Bane is hired by Sidious to steal a Holocron and to help him gives him a map of the jedi temple.

So I figured let’s have Bane not get the map from the get-go, but instead steal it from the Senate building (in Hostage Crisis). That means his plan is longer and the plot is more “cinematic” The episode and consequences stay (for the most part) the same, but the film becomes more cohesive with background changes. Bane wins and walks away, with some voice lines added on to indicate he now has the map- next scene is “Day Two” of the Heist. You will lose out on Ziro the Hutt, but he was a red herring in the next episode anyway.

I don’t like jar jar. Does that make me a threat? Jeez

The same applies with Rose. If you don’t like her, you should be able to not like her.

It’s an entirely different playing field when you are are attacking Ahmed Best or Kelly Marie Tran. That’s terrible. Both are fine actors… no let’s simplify this real people doing their job. We should not attack them.

But we should be allowed to critique the characters.

A galaxy divided! Striking swiftly after the Battle of Geonosis, Count Dooku’s droid army has seized control of the major hyperspace lanes, separating the Republic from the majority of its clone army. While the Jedi are occupied fighting a war, no one is left to keep the peace. Chaos and crime spread, and the innocent become victims in a lawless galaxy.

Imgur

The Clone Wars show has always been one of my favorite parts of Star Wars. But there are many fans who haven’t seen it! Whether it was the bad taste in their mouth after the PT, or a dislike for animation, or just not having enough time to sit through the filler. This a shame.

While I can’t fix the first two points besides repeating give it a chance, the third group does bring up a valid point. There are many episodes in the Clone Wars that appear insignificant but are vital to understanding what goes down later in the series.

But a simple “series” of edits won’t do. There is simply too much that goes on in this the Clone Wars. The show is built as an anthology series but expects you to watch every installemnt. So while you may think the show is based on Anakin and Ahsoka… you need to watch that Mandalorian politics episode to understand Darth Maul’s return.

“My vision” is to trim the fat off some Clone Wars episodes and merge them into one longer, more coherent story. But I’m not just stopping there. I want to turn this into a cinematic universe.

Imgur

Truth be told, Smudger’s edits were the only thing initially holding me back from the project. I did not want to “over-saturate the market” aka not get any attention. But there is a key difference between our projects, and that is the cinematic universe.

A cinematic universe is a type of franchise where main characters/themes are not always expected to return every single time. This comes in handy big time when dealing with the Clone Wars. I don’t want to get into the details here (to avoid spoilers) but I have many examples of these types of scenarios.

It also helps focus on certain parts of the show. I’d like to make many, many edits, each dealing with different characters. For example, I’d love to help with a Domino Squad movie. Or an edit with all the various Grievous episodes, tied together with the theme of the Jedi hunting him down.

I already have created an edit focused on Darth Maul. This will be updated later on, but for now, will be canon: https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Maul-Son-of-Dathomir-Released/id/59332

Imgur

But before I get ahead of myself… I will focus on my current edit, the “Iron Man” to this project: Ahsoka.

Named after the show’s most popular new character, Ahsoka merges several Season 1 and 2 episodes to create a streamlined narrative concerning Anakin’s relationship with his new apprentice. Beginning with her surprise introduction (and Anakin’s dislike of her) and ending with Anakin willing to go out of his way to save her. To be frank, there are some issues with the episode blending- namely Ahsoka doesn’t change much (this is only seasons 1 and 2). But I plan to address this with sequels later down the line.

I plan to use the following episodes:
-Clone Wars Movie
-Hostage Crisis
-Holocron Heist
-Storm over Ryloth
-Cargo of Doom

Until then, I don’t have much to show, besides this color correction:

Imgur
Imgur

And a promise to at least complete the first edit in the project. I will then continue, based off community feedback. Please provide any suggestions or feedback below.
