Name Something You Unreservedly Love About The Rise Of Skywalker
Time

I might as well just quote what I was going to say since its already been said:

I also really love the fact that we finally got an extended adventure with the Poe/Finn/Rey crew, something that none of the other films ever did.

Everything Threepio

The little shrug Ben gives when he pulls the saber from behind his back

There’s more too, such as Poe’s arc’s fulfillment. Character-wise, probably what I loved the most in this film. Also the Ben - Han scene. Really liked it, and I still think it was Leia that triggered the vision.

Ranking the Star Wars films

Updated ranking after second TROS watch:

 1. Star Wars
 2. The Empire Strikes Back
 3. Return of the Jedi
 4. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
 5. Rogue One
 6. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
 7. Solo
 8. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
 9. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
 10. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
 11. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Having seen TROS a third time recently - and I only saw Solo once, 3 days before TROS’ release, so… that’s two movies I’ve had to allow to sink in.

 1. Star Wars
 2. The Empire Strikes Back
 3. Return of the Jedi
 4. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
 5. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
 6. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones
 7. Solo: A Star Wars Story
 8. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
 9. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
 10. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace
 11. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Might as well break it down since it’s not your usual ranking:

TROS is such a wild beast. I enjoy it, but… there’s nothing there. It’s so hollow. It’s dumb, fan-fic-y, and that’s fun, but at the same time that’s not really what this should be about. So it’s only above the two films I actually don’t really like at all.

It also hurts to put TLJ ‘last’, so to speak (it’s the last one of the ones I can really have a good time with), but what can I do. The less interesting part of the film is… well… I don’t really like it. And it feels like a different movie. And the more interesting part depends on some key things that just don’t work for me. They almost do, but they don’t. But it’s a bold and beautiful film, and I’ve grown to appreciate it a lot more recently, especially after TROS.

Solo was fun, even if there seemed to have something missing. But I liked it. Not much to be said I think.

AotC reminds me of TLJ in lots of ways. Out of the two stories going on, one is very good and the other not so much (for different reasons). I can excuse AotC’s stupidly cringy moments though, because the story the movie’s telling is just so interesting. TLJ’s story didn’t get me as hooked (mostly TFA’s fault) and so whatever felt off felt much more off than in AotC for example. AotC also makes the galaxy feel like such a huge and mysterious world. What I’m trying to say is that I see some redeeming qualities to this film and I just enjoy it for the most part.

Rogue One is a near perfect SW film to me: its faults are mainly in a couple of underdeveloped characters. Only reason it’s fifth is because RotS is also a near perfect SW film in my book and there’s more emotional investment to that one than to RO. And then, well, the OT’s above it as well because, well, it’s the OT.

Speaking of the OT, I sooo wish I could place RotJ higher. Maybe even first. But its first and second acts are just not on par with Star Wars or TESB. There’s also the sister thing, and the underutilized written-in-in-the-last-couple-of-weeks Han Solo… but, to me, Luke still manages to carry it fairly well. And what the heck it’s still Return of the Jedi, it’s still fucking awesome.

And TESB and SW are perfect.

I should point out that Star Wars won an Academy Award for editing (due in no small part to the work of Marcia Lucas), so being in awe of its original editing is not unwarranted.

People tend not to realize I suppose that Lucas oversaw the editing team and even did some editing himself on the film.

This. The editors said it themselves when receiving the Academy Award.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

I love it Ady! Congrats, you’re doing a marvelous job. Might I ask though (I was reminded of this by your use of the original ANH:R audio), if it hasn’t been answered yet (if it has, I’m sorry), but is ANH:R HD going to be more similar to the original Revisited or to the PURIST version?

If by “boldness” you mean RJ promoting the whole “no good, no bad, no Sith, no Jedi, just Force” business, I’m glad the last half hour regressed–a good-evil dichotomy is what Star wars is built on. I think it should have been more explicitly rejected and done better.

Yeah after 7 movies how dare RJ try to add new layers. Lucky for you TROS has “fixed” all of that (gievn the result, it was not a really good idea…)

But yeah, RJ also missed the point but at least he tried something. JJ doesn’t try anything.

Yeah, after 7 movies in a franchise based on the most obvious good guys versus bad guys stories ever, adding a schpeel about how the good guys and bad guys both suck probably isn’t a good move.

TROS didn’t even “fix” that anyways, it retroactively fixed the other things RJ did in TLJ, like Snoke being killed off, Rey still being OP, Luke hiding (kinda, implied that he was also looking for the Sith planet), and her parents being nobodies.

But do you really think that Rey is not OP anymore just because she’s related to this one person? Brother, we have very different interpretations of the force and how it works.

I can’t think of a single director who would be a great fit for Star Wars.

George Lucas. 😉

Gareth Edwards makes gorgeous compositions and understands the importance of worldbuilding, but can’t seem to make an interesting character to save his life.

Strong disagree here. Jyn is, to me, the best of the new characters since Disney took over. Sure, Baze and Chirrut aren’t well developed at all, but I know enough of the others to be emotionally invested in what happens to the crew. But I won’t discuss this here any further, this is a TROS thread after all.

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Yep, it’s the ultimate fan fiction. I’m glad, though. That’s always what the ST’s been, and now I can take it not seriously without feeling like I’m disrespecting it, because TROS informs us that the ST doesn’t want to be anything other than, well, fan fic. TLJ wanted to, but TFA and TROS most certainly don’t.

I might as well post what I said in the other thread here:

So, after thinking I hated it the first time I saw it, I now think I actually really liked this movie. It rendered the rest of the ST pointless, sure, much like the ST had rendered the saga pointless for me before in TFA. The ending is ROTJ on steroids, and since they could make Episode VII from Episode VI, they sure can Episode X this Episode IX, make Palpatine clone someone again and have him be the big bad again in XII… wow this sounds so stupid when I type it or say it out loud. It’s also a shame since it’s exactly what Rian’s film went against. Oh well.

I’m not a fan of TFA at all (that was the movie that made everything else pointless to me, by rebooting the status quo and rendering every single accomplishment that came before pointless), but I appreciated what TLJ tried to do from there, despite disagreeing with it in the most part and thinking it had a very flawed execution at times. But I definitely respected it.

TROS, on the other hand, seemingly embraces with open arms the idea that the ST is nothing more than fan fiction, and I loved it since that’s also what I consider the ST to be. I mean, most story points may as well come from YouTube theorists. The crawl seemed like something 12 year old me would come up with, much like the story. But man, it was extremely enjoyable. Sometimes it seemed like they weren’t giving a fuck, like: have Palpatine use force lightning in hundreds of ships. That was just so ridiculous, much like when he was sucking “force life” out of Rey and Ben. But who cares. It’s so stupid and ridiculous it’s fun.

And that was great for me. I wasn’t sure how IX could save the ST for me, and it did in the most fun way possible: by making everything look silly. I won’t rewatch the ST whenever I rewatch the saga, but I might rewatch it for fun every once in a while. But, man, I do feel bad for Rian. He tried to make something serious and deep out of TFA only for Abrams to literally retcon every one of the major decisions Rian took. A shame. But whatever, I’m happy.

I was surprised by how well they handled Carrie, I thought it would be much worse, and it definitely could’ve been. The one scene I think stood out was the one where she says “be optimist” or whatever. The others work very well.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

Okay. Here goes. I’m rewatching TROS later today though, so we’ll see how that changes this. As it is though…

 1. Star Wars
 2. The Empire Strikes Back
 3. Return of the Jedi
 4. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
 5. Rogue One
 6. Solo
 7. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
 8. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
 9. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
 10. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
 11. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

TFA I can enjoy quite a bit until the 40ish minute mark. Then there’s just so much lacking… and TPM is a bore. The rest I either enjoy immensely or just greatly or not so much but still enjoy it.

I’d love for SirRidley to make a version of the crawls with the actual titles if possible. Would be cool to have both versions for those who prefer the original titles.

I’ll consider it! Others have asked for that as well. I doubt Hal would make a separate edition of the films just to change a few words, but maybe he could have the crawls with original titles as separate downloads that could be edited into the films by those who want them.

Sorry for bumping this subject if it’s any bother to any involved, but did this happen? I’d love to get the new, perfect crawls with the original titles.
