So I just nabbed the 2.5 versions of ANH and Empire and they look great. Can anyone tell me what mix audio Track 3 (the “Cinema 5.1” track) is based on? I’m particularly interested for A New Hope, due to the numerous audio changes across different versions.
I think what you’re missing Malastrana, is that a movie with good and bad aspects, minus the bad aspects, doesn’t necessarily equal a better movie.
Even if something is “bad” or isn’t well executed, it’s sometimes necessary to support the story.
It’s like if you held up a bridge on poor-quality support beams. The beams are bad, but if you just take them out without replacing them, the bridge collapses.
This is something a lot of fan edits (even my prequel edits) struggle with. I enjoyed aspects of this edit but I felt like without any context for the characters, the edit doesn’t work, even if the context wasn’t executed well in the original film.

Also, what source are you using to restore the original lightsabers? Are you re-rotoscoping them by hand? In the Obi-Wan shot you included in the OP, the cores look pretty dull and there seems to be some weird color artifacts emanating from the sabers. Aside from it being too dark, I actually think the Blu-Ray looks better.
I absolutely wouldn’t want to see Porkins go either but I like where sansuni is coming from. I’d prefer it be limited to adding new female pilots/soldiers in extended sequences (in ROTJ:R maybe?) rather than outright replacing existing actors.
Also, he is called Porkins by name in the movie: “cover me Porkins!”
I would personally prefer the Sentinel class from Rebels, only because we haven’t seen it in the films before, and it is more clearly a transport while still looking similar enough to the original Tydirium to not feel entirely alien. The zeta class would be too radical a change IMO, and it’s role is so similar to Rogue One that it would feel like a repeat.

The more I watch the Obi-Wan vs. Maul duel on Tattooine in Rebels, the more I enjoy it. It only makes me want to imagine a duel between Kenobi and Vader in a more samurai kinda feel.
This. The original duel feels clumsy and disjointed but the Revisited version just feels frantic and over-edited. To create a very tactical, precise looking fight I think 2nd unit inserts would be needed. You’d just have to obscure Obi-Wans face.
Here’s what I have at this point for the Hosnian destruction, featuring NeverarGreat’s FX shots to darken SKB and remove the star destroyer. The audio sounds pretty unmolested, since the cut to the surface of the planet is in the same place audio-wise that the cut to Finn boarding the ship originally was. I added the sound effect for the exploding planet in the distance. I’m happier with this version than any prior.

I feel like there are several noticeable music edits there. I haven’t watched the original film in a while but the cut to Leia stood out to me in particular. Is there any way to just let the cue play out and maybe rebuild the sfx? Easier said than done I know.

That’s fair. I totally get where you’re coming from. I’m sure if I ever have kids I’ll want to introduce Star Wars to them. I just feel like the movies that made a lasting impression on me as a kid are the ones that challenged me.
That said, one thing that early Clone Wars seasons did that I liked is established Anakin and Obi-Wan as these swashbuckling Saturday morning cartoon heroes that we really root for. They have playful banter in a way that feels more familial and less like petty bickering than Lucas’s attempts at banter in the films.
I think it’s important to establish that before hitting us with the tragedy. I guess I just don’t know that the material is there in the films to support these kinds of revisions.
I don’t know, I think you’re underestimating the maturity level of the later seasons of Clone Wars and some of Rebels. There are beheadings and political debates and moral quandaries. The word terrorist is used more than once. What you’re talking about sounds more like the LEGO Star Wars series, which is a squarely kid-targeted affair.
I mean, it makes sense? It’s not really a movie I have any interest in seeing though. To me, the whole draw of the prequels was the “Shakespearean tragedy” of how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. Despite problems with the execution in the prequels we got, I don’t have much desire to see a version of the prequels that isn’t that.
I just want to chime in and say that every shot I’ve seen of this looks fantastic. Keep up the good work!

Personally, I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I thought it did a much better job of the kind of “political drama” storyline that I think George was aiming for with the prequels. It was also nice to see some focus on Leia, since her role wasn’t that big in The Force Awakens and I think Claudia Gray captured the intelligence and fiery wit that Carrie always brought to the role. However, for the purposes of the edit a quick look at the New Republic article on Wookieepedia might suffice 😛

I hate to be that EU guy, but Claudia Gray’s book Bloodline goes into a lot of detail about how corrupt and ineffectual the NR senate is and how Leia’s basically been cast out since the secret about her parentage was revealed. Half the senators secretly back the First Order and that’s why the Resistance had to be established as a rogue watchdog group in the first place. Normally I’d say create your own canon, but Rian Johnson apparently contributed some ideas regarding how the NR senate is portrayed in the book, and it supposedly ties into Episode VIII, so I’d be wary about portraying the NR this way if you want this edit to tie into the next movie.
So after having seen various official versions of ANH and Ady’s version many times, I just noticed that Vader’s lines “your powers are weak, old man” and “you should not have come back” during the duel are swapped in Revisited. Was there ever a rationale given for this? The original version had a great pregnant pause on obi-wan’s face after Vader says “you should not have come back”, which is an emotional beat that’s kind of lost in the Revisited version.
I know Obi-Wan igniting first has been brought up before (which I’m also in favor of reverting) but I don’t remember this one being talked about.
I just want to say I’m flattered to have my edits mentioned alongside great ones like Hal’s, L8wrtr’s or Kerr’s 😃

I was all for radical changes to the prequels initially, but after watching all of Clone Wars and Rebels, I’m starting to feel like I’m so invested in the canon that I’ll find Ady’s prequels hard to swallow.
That said, I think Ady should make the edits he wants to make, they can’t be all things to all people.
I’m glad to see little nods to the canon anyway, like the pink/magenta X-Wing engines, and the TFA layout of the Falcon.
Please don’t judge me when I say that I hope the Revisited versions of the OT won’t contradict the official versions of the PT. Then again, since the OT is so sacred to many, most of the changes made to them are aesthetic, and not story-related.
Some of Adywan’s changes to RotJ may depend on what he can change in the PT. I’m still sure they’ll fit better than how much the PT already contradicts the OT.

The R2 stuff totally belongs in this edit though. I like your solution vastly better than the v1 solution of just cutting 3P0’s line.
My understanding is that he has to be plugged in to receive transmissions, so I’m personally more fond of NeverarGreat’s solution.
Yep I agree, this is exactly what I meant 😃 And with the removal of 3PO awkward line from restructured v1 (“I don’t think R2 has the rest of the map”) it could work better now.
In the new context you need that line to make sense of what’s going on. Otherwise it’s not clear why R2 partially powers up.

I’m still very interested in this edit and I’m intrigued by what you’re doing with Anakin’s character. I will say that when I watched the preview, the music changes were distracting to me, partially because the old music can still be heard underneath and partially just because I prefer most of John Williams’s choices: a lot of the changes feel a bit too melodic to be over dialogue when subtle underscore would work better.
