He says that Rose should have been in charge of gathering reinforcements for the final battle. So would this be possible? As far as I can remember she is just hanging out at the Resistance base the entire movie, but could it be possible to insert some dialogue to indicate that she is busy calling up leaders of the core worlds and have them Rendzevous in some place? Then Lando could lead these gathered forces to the final fight.

Man that was a really good video essay. It crystallized a lot of my frustrations with this movie.

I don’t know, I understand your point, but to me that’s the kind of thinking that led to this movie being overstuffed with fanservice and callbacks in the first place. I LOVE Obi-Wan, he might be my favorite Star Wars character, but I recognize that his part in the story is done. I would have been more okay with some kind of Anakin presence, only because it might created an interesting dynamic with Kylo’s Vader obsession. Even then, I don’t think sticking him in a shot at the end of the movie does much good.

Add other force ghosts to the Luke/Leia shot like Anakin and Obi Wan.

With the exception of Ben, I don’t really get this suggestion. Anakin, Yoda and Obi-Wan have no meaning or significance to Rey. They did to Luke, but we already got that scene at the end of Return of the Jedi.

What I think a lot of fans don’t want to accept (and to be honest, I don’t think Abrams and Terrio wanted to accept this either) is that the OT characters are not the main characters of these new movies. The protagonists are the new characters: Rey, Ben, Finn, Poe, and Rose. Any OT or PT characters should be there to support their character development, not to steal the spotlight.

I think having Ben live at the end would be quite ambitious and maybe beyond the scope of this edit, but if possible I’d like to see him appear beside Luke and Leia as a force ghost. It would require some FX work but doesn’t seem impossible considering what’s been accomplished in some of Hal’s other edits. I don’t feel that we get enough closure with his character in the theatrical cut.

Info Wanted: Which version of the Original Trilogy preservations to watch?
Time

It really depends on how much of a purist you are.

If I’m going to watch the originals, I still prefer the Despecialized Editions. They may be stuck at 720p, but for the most part they look cleaner and sharper than 4K77 and 4K83 because they’re sourced primarily from the original negatives. These are reconstructions though, and occasionally seams can be seen, particularly when Harmy had to rely on upscaled Laserdisc-quality footage. When Harmy eventually creates new versions using 4k sources, they will arguably be the definitive way to watch the OOT, but that’s a ways off.

If you want to see versions of these movies that are completely untampered with, 4k77 and 4k83 are the way to go, since they are actual scans of original film prints, with no SE sourced footage. They do look a little “rougher” and less finely detailed, but not moreso than the films would have looked during their theatrical run.

As for fanedits, I think there are two for the OT worth pointing out: adywan’s Star Wars Revisited and Hal9000’s custom special editions. These edits are primarily for people who admired what the SEs were trying to do, but disagree with some of the actual decisions that were made. Hal9000’s edits are basically hybridizations of the original and SE versions of the films and revert some of the more controversial changes. Currently ANH and ESB are available in full quality and ROTJ is available as a workprint. The Revisited edits are much more ambitious and essentially seek to update the films’ visual effects across the board to a more modern standard, as well as fix various continuity errors. Currently ESB is available in HD quality, and ANH is available in DVD quality only. An HD version of A New Hope is forthcoming, as well as an edit of ROTJ.

It works…but it also breaks my heart to see this (imo) powerful scene diminished to accommodate a poorly conceived retcon. I think that Rey looking inward and admitting to herself that her parents were nobodies is part of what makes the scene work. Just my opinion of course, but if you choose to go down this path I will probably stick to earlier versions of Legendary or make my own edit.

I love this, it is my go to version of RO, as are all your other edits. Thank you!

This is a thought I’ve been toying with; I know this is just a side project of yours, so maybe I’ll try it on my own. However, I would be interested in how the movie works without showing vader until the final scene (only including the mention of him coming). It isn’t his story, and his mustafar scene detracts more than adds to his character, for a few reasons. I think only showing the hallway scene develops his mystique and character more.

Check out TM2YC’s edit, he attempts a version of this. Truth be told a hybrid of Hal’s edit (in which he mainly took ideas from DigMod) and TM2YC’s would probably be my go-to for this movie.

If “Rey Palpatine” is removed somehow, what is the motivation of Palpatine to have Ochi try to find Rey and kill her parents while doing so?

Simple, he senses Rey’s power in the force/her potential in the dark side, similar to how he sensed Anakin’s potential. You might need to an extra line or two culled from elsewhere to sell this, but imo it’s a much less convoluted explanation.

Hal, I know a big part of your philosophy with your prequel edits was bending them to harmonize with the OT rather than the other way around. Similarly, as someone who quite liked the first two films in the sequel trilogy, my preference would be to bend this film to harmonize with those two better, rather than the other way around. Because of that, I’m all for a removal of Rey Palpatine, although I understand if it’s not something you want to implement in your edits.

I just don’t know how possible it is to remove Rey’s parents from the movie? If its possible i would do it, but Ochi’s ship design is very explicitly from Force Awakens so it might be odd to have the same ship without the backstory?

It would be difficult for a number of reasons, that, but also quite a bit of dialogue is had talking about the fact that Palpatine had her parents killed, from Kylo but then later from Rey to Finn. In my mind, leaving it in is the much cleaner solution. Palpatine sensed her power early and wanted her dead, and ended up killing her parents looking for her. This fuels Rey’s anger and spurns her to search for Palpatine and kill him (as she states in the film). Removing that entirely would create a lot of problems.

The first Rey and Palpatine scene will already be a nightmare ‘My granddaughter…’ ‘Empress Palpatine’ etc.

Arguably, you could keep “Empress Palpatine,” because Palpatine will be taking over her body, right? Might actually make an interesting parallel to the last scene, here Palpatine is goading her to adopt his name, essentially.

I do agree it would be more difficult, but I do think removing that aspect would be worth exploring. I think Rey’s parents not caring about her makes her character more interesting, but if someone threatened her parents’ lives to know her location, if they didn’t care then they would’ve just told him. So it turns out her parents did care about her, and even died for her, which just makes her story a lot less interesting imo.

I don’t disagree at all. Just feel like it’s a house of cards, and taking out Rey Palpatine could already be enough to knock it all down. The solution I have at least keeps some of the structural integrity of the film as is (even if it reduces some of the meaning as a compromise). There is apparently a deleted scene where Ben tells Rey not to give into her hate and cut down Palpatine that would work well with the ‘Rey wants revenge’ angle as well.

I think I’d mostly be okay with the reveal that Rey’s parents had hidden her on Jakku to protect her from Palpatine with the explanation of “Palpatine had sensed Rey’s potential with the Force” rather than “Rey is literally Palpatine’s granddaughter” It would still be a retcon but not as severe of a retcon…

This article resonated with me a bit, and gave me second thoughts about the whole “Rey Skywalker” bit: https://www.slashfilm.com/rey-in-the-rise-of-skywalker/
I wonder if it would be possible to replace the Force Ghosts of Luke and Leia at the end with that of Ben Solo’s ghost giving Rey an encouraging nod. Then instead of “Rey Skywalker”, she could say something like “Rey…just Rey”. Just a thought.

In fairness, Poe could be bi. But I get it.

He definitely could, as could Finn (especially considering he already hinted at feelings for Rey in TFA and kissed Rose in TLJ). However it’s hard not to read it as a “no-homo” thing in context. I know this is really only disappointing to a certain subset of fans, and it didn’t bug me that much when I watched the movie, but I think Finn/Poe at the end would have made more sense than introducing a new love interest for Poe and a potential love interest for Finn this late in the game.

Do you guys feel that Zorri and Jannah were introduced strangely as potential love interests for Finn and Poe? I feel they wanted to make it clear they’re not gay, or something.

I saw this movie with a few friends, two of which are part of the LGBTQ+ community and they both read it this way. This is the only reason I’d consider cutting the overtly romantic bits of Poe and Zorri’s relationship, to leave it at least ambiguous.

I’m really not sure about modifying any of the other films to suit IX right now, because the grief is still too near. I very well may just choose to ignore it.

TROS is actively antithetical to everything I’ve tried to do the past handful of years, and deeply incongruous with the good aspects of the last two films taken collectively. If I’m going to give it a fair treatment, I will need to take time to muster enough goodwill toward it, come to understand it somewhat thoroughly, and most importantly wait for at least some community ideas. Or I could retreat to a remote island and burn the fan edits.

I mean, you managed to make Attack of the Clones watchable, so I’m sure you’ll be able to make something out of it 😉. Seriously though, I understand how you’re feeling. I’m happy for the people who enjoyed it, but TROS probably disappointed me more than any other recent Star Wars film. It will take some serious work to make it harmonize with the rest of the saga, especially The Last Jedi, which has quickly become one of my favorite Star Wars films.

Here are some of the cuts I would make, not knowing what deleted material we have to work with:

1.) Try using a mixture of cuts and alternate Kylo Ren dialogue (perhaps from the video games?) to remove the “Rey Palpatine” reveal from the film. Ideally, I’d also like to remove any implication that Rey’s parents were trying to hide her or protect her from Palpatine. To me, this twist cheapens the the reveal at the end of The Last Jedi: that Rey is ‘no one’ and needs to forge her own path forward. It’s as if, after The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi came around and said “no, actually Darth Vader was lying, Obi-Wan was your father”. I found it supremely unsatisfying.

I think it would be enough just to imply that Palpatine senses Rey’s growing power and wants Kylo to nip it in the bud by killing her. However, when he notices Rey straying toward the dark path and Kylo coming to the light, he changes his plan and encourages Rey to strike him down and take his place, the same tactic he tried with Luke and Anakin before him. Stuff like the force lightning reveal and Dark Rey could still work in this context imo, as could the idea of the “Force dyad”.

I don’t even mind the ‘Rey Skywalker’ moment at the end in this context, as it makes sense to me for Rey to adopt the legacy of the people who helped her find her place in the world, although I’d trim the old woman specifically asking for her surname, so it’s just “Rey… looks at force ghosts of Luke and Leia Rey Skywalker”

2.)I’m okay with Luke catching the saber, it feels like a nice reversal of that controversial moment in the Last The Jedi and further cements the arc that Luke went through in that film. However, I really dislike the line he says about “treating a Jedi weapon with more respect”. Imo it feels like a pointed dig at The Last Jedi rather than a natural evolution of Luke’s character. I think that line could be safely excised from the movie.

3.) I’d remove the throwaway line about the Holdo maneuver. Again, it feels like unnecessary lampshading of a moment in The Last Jedi and ripped me out of the movie.

4.) I’d remove Finn trying to tell Rey something and not getting a chance throughout the film. I know the implication is that Finn is trying to tell her he’s Force sensitive, but I don’t think this is clearly communicated or paid off satisfactorily in the film.

5.) I’d remove that last conversation between Lando and Jannah. This moment confused me in the film and felt like a vestige of a cut plotline. I saw it as a sort of fatherly interaction but other people I’ve spoken to thought Lando was hitting on her…so I think it’s safe to say that this scene didn’t land for a lot of people.

6.) I’d remove the sequence of the Star Destroyer blowing up Kijimi. I think the massive size of the fleet creates enough stakes on its own. Do we really have to go back to the superweapon well and make each one a Death Star?

7.) This one is more debatable, but I’d consider removing the implication of a romantic history between Poe and Zorri, as well as Poe’s attempts to get her to kiss him. I like that the two of them have a history but the romance angle feels unnecessary and, in my opinion, isn’t given nearly enough time to feel properly developed.

8.) There’s a lot of fanservice in this film, And i’d have to give it more thought as to which fanservice moments worked for me and which didn’t. Off the top of my head, the one only that seems like a no-brainer to remove is Chewie getting his medal. in hindsight this felt super out of left-field.

9.) Can scenes be shuffled around so there’s more time between Chewie’s “death” and his re-emergence as a First Order prisoner? We barely have a chance to let that sink in before it’s unceremoniously reversed. I also wonder if it’s possible to remove the restoration of C3PO’s memory by R2. Perhaps even have R2 try to restore his memory and fail, creating a sad moment between the two friends. It just feels like there’s too many fake-out deaths in this one movie.

I quite liked The Force Awakens and loved The Last Jedi but my thoughts on this film are more mixed to negative. The pacing, especially in the first act, feels way too frenetic with scenes often ending abruptly. I am really not a fan of the “Rey Palpatine” reveal and I feel it severely undercuts the messages I found resonant in The Last Jedi. Overall it often feels like there’s just way too much going on in this movie and not opportunities to slow down and let the film breathe. I hope the Blu-Ray offers enough deleted material to fill in some of those gaps, because otherwise this movie may prove a tough nut to crack.

As much as I want a nice boxset, that’s a bonkers price-point. I hope it isn’t a limited release like the Marvel sets 😕.

Just thumbed through the new ROTJ workprint and it indeed looks much better! I’ll try to give it another watch-through and look out for any issues.

That said, any particular reason you only chose to encode 2-channel AAC audio this time? I believe your TLJ V3 workprint and your previous ROTJ workprint both included 5.1 AC3 at 640kbps.

Personally I’d also be up for a higher bitrate 1080p encode at around 10ish GB considering the quality of the source, but I understand why you’d choose not to do that for a workprint release.

Currently encoding a new workprint for ROTJ using the 19SE as the primary source, since it was easy to do. This should be much more watchable than the BR-sourced one available now.
But, I probably won’t use the 19SE as the ultimate source because it is a different feel to the ones I used for ANH and ESB. Whether it’s Adywan adjusting the BR or someone else adjusting the eventual disc release of the 19SE, the ultimate source remains hidden for now.

Looking forward to checking out the workprint! The 19SE does have a bit of a different feel, However I’m not convinced that a single LUT couldn’t remedy that. It’s such a better starting point for colors than the Blu.

Well, sure, assuming that an eventual 1080p rip/conversion I can get in front of me looks right. (Any of my devices make it look dark and dull.) I agree about the eyebrow removal being superior.

I subscribe to Disney+ and own the Blu-Rays so I grabbed a 1080p web rip from Schorman. The colors look good as does the video quality generally, but unfortunately the bitrate is too low to use for anything but a workprint I’d think. The 4k webrip floating around seems to be a significantly higher bitrate and encoded with HEVC which should allow for much better quality. Unfortunately I think you would then run in to problems with HDR > SDR conversion, unless someone is able to rip a 4k SDR version from D+.

EDIT: checked out the 4k version. Quality looks immaculate but yeah, you would need to convert it from HDR to SDR somehow using tonemapping. Not sure how this would be done using commercially available software.
