Star Wars: The Phantom Menace - Faster, More Intense! (Released)
Time

Surprise! I’m more or less done with a V2 of this edit, although I’m going to need help with a custom crawl and credits. The new version is built from the ground up using Hal’s 1080p v6 of Cloak of Deception as the only video source, along with his lossless audio and a few patches of audio from other edits and various other sources.

As for what to expect, it follows the same basic philosophy as V1 and includes many of the same cuts, but it’s a little more reigned in. I pulled back on a few cuts in V1 that I felt weren’t seamless, either due to audio transitions or continuity.I also included some things that were excised in the original cut because I’ve warmed to them a bit, or felt they were ultimately harmless. In particular, two short scenes are re-added in the first act that appear in Hal’s edit, since I felt the pacing in my V1 was a little too “fast and intense”. Jabba the Hutt also appears during the pod race this time around.

Once I get around to titles and credits, I’ll watch it through again and upload the new version.

Dom's (Possibly) Useful TROS Edit (WIP)
Time

I have to say that I really like how Kylo’s vision recontextualizes his decision to reforge the mask. It’s a moment that felt almost completely unmotivated in the original cut and here it feels like a very logical progression for the character. He’s desperately trying to cling on to his dark side persona after briefly letting himself be vulnerable in TLJ, but of course the cracks in his armor are plain as day.

New to this forum but very interested to see what improvements can be made to The Rise of Skywalker. After some reflection I have grown to enjoy this movie but still think there were some major missed opportunities. One of them being the absence of force ghosts in the ‘I am all the Jedi’ scene. I came across this video today which I think is a subtle way of including them. I would love to see someone tweak this to make it even more authentic. The final flash of the spirits in particular I think is perfect.

As much as I was initially against the idea, I actually really like this implementation. Would be interesting to see something like this.

Octorox, if you right-click on the audio file in the bin, select interpret footage, go to audio tab, change Mono to 5.1 and the number of tracks from 6 to 1, that should properly format the clip!

Thanks! Honestly updates to my edits are kind of in limbo right now but if I really get back into it I’ll keep that in mind. I know that re-compressing an already heavily compressed file isn’t the best tactic.

I think it’s also worth remembering some people will want the best possible presentation of the Prequels, and even though the D+ versions aren’t as different - they’re still a better transfer than the 2011 blus, correct?

I believe they are the same.

According to thedigitalbits TPM is a new scan which was also used for the 3D re-release (there’s still a lot of DNR in an attempt to blend the film elements and digital scenes) and AOTC and ROTS are based on the old 2K masters (they were shot in 1080p but mastered in 2K) but with additional upscaling and “film look” processing to bring them to 4K. The grades are also slightly different.

The Blu-Rays included in the new set are downscales of the new 4K master, not the same as the old blu-rays.

What’s a good book series or something to chase Star Wars for a bit?
Time

I’m going to recommend child/young adult fantasy because ultimately that’s what Star Wars is, and it’s where I’d go first if looking for something Star Wars-esque.

I’m a fan of the His Dark Materials books. They present themselves as child-friendly fantasy much like Star Wars but there’s a lot of meditation on religion in there (It’s ultimately pretty critical of organized religion though, so just a heads up if that’s not something you’d be into). There’s a show on HBO now too but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. I’d read the books first, and don’t bother at all with the 2007 film.

I will also recommend the Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra animated series. They are ostensibly kids shows but deal with surprisingly mature themes, and they take some of the eastern philosophy stuff baked into Star Wars and take it much further. There’s a character redemption arc in there that some people feel is what Kylo Ren should have been. Once again, don’t bother with the film adaptation.

Yeah, I think people would just be disappointed because they’re not the same story.

Hal’s prequel edits don’t follow the plots of the books they’re named after either.

But those books aren’t put on a pedestal by fans the way the Thrawn trilogy has been for almost 30 years.

Yup. the only sequel I’d want to potentially change the name of in an edit is The Rise of Skywalker, and only if it was a “Rey nobody” edit.

My only issue with removing the Jakku is that without it there are no planets representing the sequel trilogy. Personally I would’ve liked to see Canto Bight added on top of the existing ones, and a prequel planet like Naboo or Coruscant.

As for ROTJ, have you tried removing the Galaxy celebration scenes but keeping the SE music track? Maybe it’s because I grew up with the SE but I prefer the newer John Williams track to Yub Nub.

I’m assuming you mean “please don’t” entertain AbramPT’s suggestion? 😉

I just remember my Star Wars newbie friends being considerably confused by the reason behind Palpatine’s transformation in LOE. Also, TROS would provide some payoff now that we can finally witness the full power of force lightning redirection that was hinted at in ROTS.

Then again, maybe LOE simply isn’t the ROTS edit for me. Perhaps I’ll finally learn how to use video editing software and attempt my own micro-edits instead of trying to convince Hal to do all the hard work for me!!

No disrespect intended but I really wouldn’t want to see that change reverted. The confusion you describe is exactly how I felt while watching the theatrical cut of ROTS. In comparison, the LOE version seems much more elegant to me.

Proooooobably not worth mentioning, but in light of Palpatine having his skin melted/torn off his body from force lightning at the end of ROS, would it make sense to include Palpatine being disfigured from his force lightning in LOE? I feel like there’s always been an argument over whether Palpatine was hiding his true form prior to being “lightninged” in ROTS or if he was truly disfigured from the process. ROS seems to clarify that, but maybe I’m reading into it.

Also, I know you deeply want to leave these edits alone at this point so feel free to ignore this post.

To quote Palpatine, “please don’t!”

Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread

I mean, personally I’d hate to ruin either TFA or TLJ by putting in a TROS scene.

This is where I’m at. I’m not really interested in a trilogy redux as much as a standalone edit of TROS that fits better with the other two. I’ve enjoyed light edits of the other films like Hal’s, but generally I’m okay with the theatrical cuts. Maybe my opinions will change after watching TROS a few more times but I’m not so sure.

I agree with all the proposed changes, as long as you keep version 3.0 available. That way you have a purist version for people who prefer only minor changes, and a radical version for people who prefer radical changes.

All versions are up on the 'Spleen. I wouldn’t ask Hal to keep multiple versions on his own Google Drive as the file size adds up quickly.

“What she has to do now will take all the rest of her strength” or whatever she says hardly clarifies much. It just says “Carrie Fischer’s character is about to go die.”

At least it clarifies that she’s making an active decision to do “something” vis a vis Ben, and that whatever it is requires the last of her power, similar to Luke’s final actions in The Last Jedi. Honestly, I’m not sure the visual storytelling here is strong enough to convey even that, as clunky as the line is.
