Here it is. It’s been quite a while since I’ve shared an attempt. Mind that this is very rough and is showcasing how Ben’s death could be extended slightly and recut to have a stronger emotional impact.

EDIT:
I just realized that some of the text got cut off. This is what it said.

FX Work to Remove Ben and Insert Rey in New Position

Recoloring from Night to Day and Replace Background

FX Work to Stabilize Shot and Recolor (Shot of Wayfinder)

The music doesn’t work for me at all but the additional shots could work pretty well with the necessary FX work.

Yeah’ I’ve been thinking about this a bit.

Rey: Why did the Emperor come for me? Why did he want to kill a child? Tell me.
Ren: Because he saw what you would become. You don’t just have power. You threaten his power, like my grandfather. You’re surrounded by a vergence in the Force Rey, the most powerful nexus of Force energy seen in the galaxy since the death of Darth Vader, all those years ago.

For years, I’ve been chasing his power, and all this time it’s been right in front of me, in you. I may be his grandson, but you’re Vader’s true heir. Palpatine fears your power, Rey. We’ll kill him, together, and take the throne.

I feel like the original trilogy had some humor at the expense of Stormtroopers.

“Open the blast doors! Open the blast doors! Close the blast doors! Close the blast doors!”

They were always kind of inept canon fodder, although they weren’t as explicitly mined for comedy as the Battle Droids in the prequels. I think the problem with a lot of the humor in the prequels is that it often made the pacing of the films come to a halt. George often didn’t know when to cut away. I don’t really have a problem with quick quips and gags as long as the movie doesn’t dwell on them. I get that it can be a fine line though.

It might need some added color correction/grain to fit in better, but I think I’m ready to send this clip in!

Beautiful! Really my only nitpick is that the explosions look more like they’re happening behind the Destroyer. If we could see one explosion on the hull itself when it tips over, or add some smoke/debris in front of the Destroyer, I think that would help sell it.

It could refer to Poe altering or skipping proper lightspeed calculations causing the Falcon to be damaged on the jump to hyperspace. Either way it’s just nebulous technobabble without the actual skipping scene.

FWIW, this is how it would read to me too. Poe is about to do something crazy to escape, Chewy reacts to it, the Falcon bursts through an ice wall into hyperspace. It seems like that would be enough to damage the Falcon and justify an argument with Rey about it. The “skipping” part would just sound like random technobabble to me.

Yeah, my only issue with that currently is that the Falcon looks perfectly fine when it bursts through the ice wall, making it seem like the damage occured afterward.

Hmmmmm… it still feels weird to refer to jumping to lightspeed right after physically bursting through a barrier as ‘lightspeed skipping.’

If poppasketti wishes to share the clip, he showed me something he did to show the TIEs continue along their trajectory without jumping to lightspeed. However, that would fit into an Option A scenario.

Option A) The company breaks through the ice wall and enters hyperspace, ending the scene. TIEs may or may not be seen following, though they do not enter hyperspace. Then, when they arrive at base, reference to lightspeed skipping is removed. Rey and Poe start to argue in medium closeups while Finn presumably walks toward them, asks them to calm down, and they proceed to talk about the spy.

Option B) The company breaks through the ice wall and enters hyperspace, followed into hyperspace by TIEs like one second later, ending the scene. Then, when they arrive at base, they refer to “lightspeed skipping,” evidently something Poe must have done to evade the TIEs offscreen. Rey and Finn hug, Finn uses sarcasm, etc.

I like Option A for restoring a sense of, well, SENSE to how hyperspace works. TLJ doesn’t seem to leave room for TIEs that can instantly chase the Falcon into hyperspace one second later. Even if Option B were what was put into theaters, I still would probably have fan edited Option A into existence, honestly.

However, Option B is still way better than the theatrical. So, I’ll take it if it is needed to sell the removal of the main lightspeed skipping sequence.

With what we have, I still think Option A works better, despite the fact that you have to cut some banter. Option B to me is really no better than just showing the lightspeed skipping. The only other thing I could imagine lightspeed skipping to be is ramming through the ice wall at light speed, kind of like a mini Holdo maneuver. It would require some FX work though.

There’s no time to replace “ghouls” with anything longer.

Also, we figured no one would see Klaud in that shot unless you already knew he was there.

I don’t know about that. We live in an age when people regularly watch movies multiple times, and pause and rewind movies to find Easter eggs. If this was the version released in theaters I’m sure there would have been a million articles on this “blunder” like the Game of Thrones coffee cup.

I think it would help if you could see the Falcon visibly damaged immediately after breaking through the ice wall. Like add some smoke and flames. I’d also like to see the TIEs begin to follow and then veer off course after the Falcon jumps, although that might be tough to implement.

Also here’s an idea to make the lightspeed skipping talk feel less out of nowhere. Finn would have to be removed from the background of the cockpit and his voice processed to sound like it’s coming over the intercom. The music edit is also pretty rough and could hopefully be done better: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x5ShgpQTW1F45pNhWtahLPnlKkuPxW_3/view?usp=sharing

In the prequels, it was fear, anger, jealousy, and lust for power
that put Anakin Skywalker at risk of turning to the darkside. His character traits are what defined his arc not the superficial elements like heritage or innate power.

While Rey being a vergence in the force is an interesting idea, I don’t think her having a god-like midichlorian count justifies her inner conflict with the darkness or substantiates an arc that consists of accepting one’s darkside.

I think the idea with the most potential in this case is Rey discovering that she killed her parents, highlighting her anger as her forefront character flaw. This places the two sides of the coin (Rey and Kylo) on an even footing, reflecting the dyad and giving the audiance a legitimate fear that she is indeed at risk of turning.

-“I pushed you in the desert because I needed to see it, I needed you to see it, What you did to your parents,so long ago”.
-"They sold you because they feared you. Search your memories. See them. It was you that destroyed the ship. You killed your parents Rey. You are no better than me.

There’s also an opportunity to tie in to the force awakens Kylo presumably knowing of a girl in the desert, “what girl?”, which could play into the dyad.

In the hangar, Kylo could tell Rey that Palpatine had been grooming them all this time, that he sensed their darkness since they were children, declaring that Kylo and Rey are a Dyad, and that they will inherit the dark throne.

“It was Palpatine all this time. He sensed my power, as he sensed yours. As a boy I had visions of a desert, a girl lost in the sand, alone. It was you, Rey. We are a dyad in the force, Two that are one. We will kill him, and take the throne.”

I like this idea In theory, but my question is then, what does Ochi have to do with anything? And how does Palpatine’s plan make any sense if he knows they’re a dyad from the beginning? Why is he suprised to find out later on? I feel like this change would require a total rewrite, and can’t be accomplished professionally just by re-recording some of Kylo’s lines.

That’s basically seamless! Well done!

The only issue is that the acting and music makes it seem like this is some kind of big reveal, yet the added lines seem like pretty generic information…

Maybe an impression really is the best way to go? I don’t know.

Yeah I think that’s the main issue but there’s really no way to remedy it without recording new dialogue.

Cross-posted from the “Rey nobody” thread, Here’s a rough attempt at removing Rey Palpatine from the hangar scene: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kYcr_q8vZfmUBAkINFcC-tnqR7PMDRIl/view?usp=sharing
Unfortunately a lot of The LEGO Force Awakens lines I wanted to use didn’t work super well because Kylo’s shouting when he says them, whereas his tone in this scene is relatively calm.

Work in progress shot!

I’m having a lot of trouble with the chroma key on the Star Destroyer (because the free program I use doesn’t have chroma key.) Does anyone have any suggestions for this?

I could render out my background plate (with moving waterfalls and clouds) and have someone else comp in the destroyer?

I could be wrong about this but doesn’t the Star Destroyer need to be a model from the old Empire? Why would it be a First Order type of Star Destroyer?

They are all First Order Destroyers. None of the destroyers in this sequence are part of the Sith fleet, just generic First order Destroyers stationed around various planets.

Hey, lurker here!

I was just wondering why do you guys think Ben’s ghost should apear at the end. In my perspective he should have lived, but since he became one with the force I find interesting why they chose not to put him with Luke and Leia. My best guess is that they wanted to leave some doors open, for example, maybe he is part of Rey now? I don’t know… Maybe some dyad thing. Anyway, I personally would prefer him not appearing (actually, I would prefer him alive), but that’s just me.

Going back to my cave now, you guys are amazing!

I mean, this is (as far as we know) the end of the saga. Not really sure why they would need to “leave doors open” in the final film. If they wanted to imply he was part of Rey they should have done more to make that clear imo.

Here’s a shot of a First Order destroyer explosion from Battlefront: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h-7Rwh1w3X8TPY3v-0ZGiVL8HnKvzaW8/view?usp=sharing

I think shrunk down and with some color correction, blu, and grain, it could blend with the shot from Phantom Menace. I attempted it myself but I’m not going to share because I’m new at effects shots and it looks quite bad.

You need to mark it as shareable. We need to request access to it.

Oops, done.
