An angry Review of the 2004 OT SE DVD's
Time

Lucas got lucky. He's a brilliant story man, not a brilliant writer.

I agree in that Lucas most certainly is not the writer that Tolkien is...no question.

He had (read: HAD) a great vision and executed something great with the OT, which was at its best when he got help from Kershner and its sad he never chose to do that again. People are talking about the movies for LOTR being bloated and poorly executed, well, to be honest 1. There is a choice if you want bloat or not with the extended editions (which I greatly prefer) 2. Considering there is only soooo much time to be faithful in a movie...at 4-5 hours for the ROTK extended tell me what he could have done so much better. There will be sacrifices made in a major motion picture release, but most I feel were minor and the movies were EPIC. By the way, The PT is poorly executed and bloated and it does not have to conform to the distributor, it has had 16+ years to work out a script, it is filled with useless lines and silliness, poorly executed CG (overdone). I would have loved to have seen lucas get a writer like a CS Lewis or Tolkien of present day work with that as a script...work on all three movies at once for continuity, and have extended editions and theatrical editions (SOON AFTER THE MOVIE RELEASES!!!! NOT YEARS AND YEARS LATER WITH MULTIPLE RELEASES THAT DESPERATELY NEED EDITING TO MAKE WATCHABLE).

OK. I loved that post Duke about the similarities. To me the OT and the LOTR books will forever be my childhood's happiest memories.

And yes we need more pissed of people at those DVD's to knock sense in to GL...thanks Luke

An angry Review of the 2004 OT SE DVD's
Time
Well I thought this would be good for a laugh not make everyone angry. Like someone said above, I hope there is a number of angry reviews and not, not..."These are the greatest movies ever, made better" stuff. As far as LOTR, why is everyone a hater. I love the fact that there are extended editions. That trilogy may have been made after the OT, but the books predate the OT. The books are brilliant and I have loved them all my life, just like Star Wars...though I never had a love/hate thing like I do with Star Wars in General lately. Star Wars and the Lucas Empire is like the attractive girl that treated me really well at the beginning used me up and is now kicking me around and treating me like crap and occasionally teases me. LOTR its that nice girl that was really deep, may not have been much to look at but becomes cute later on. One had my heart (star wars) one had my brain (LOTR books) since I was a kid and loved them both...though now, I look at LOTR with zero frustration...none. I couldn't ask for more. So what if there is merchandise, is that Peter Jackson's fault? Peter Jackson made good movies and was as faithful as he could be (though there was no Arwen in LOTR...Silmarillion and Tom Bombadil is absent). I'd love to see more great literary fantasy works get done like that (eg. Tales of Narnia by CS Lewis or Gunslinger series by Stephen King).

Again we all love Star Wars, but lets not forget why were all here too. We all are frustrated to some degree. Pissed of reviews, even if over the top is whats needed to MAKE LUCAS PULL HIS HEAD OUT HIS ASS AND RELEASE THE OT RIGHT.

BTW, at least we know now with Kershner and Lowry saying work is being done for an HD-DVD release and there will be deleted scenes on that, no one has said anything about the original trilogy, but maybe. So I say keep the pissed of reviews coming.

Sound and Vision's Interview with Kershner

This is also interesting with some of his responses...

Why didn't Lucas have you direct Return of the Jedi?

For two reasons: One, I didn't want to. Two, I was asked halfway through shooting Empire, and by that time I knew that Jedi would be a three-year project. It took two years and nine months for me to do Empire, and I didn't want to go through that again. Also, I didn't think it was good to do two for George. I didn't want to be a Lucas employee. And I'd read the script of Jedi — not the whole script, but a scaled-down version — and I didn't believe it.

How did you like the changes made to Empire for the 1997 theatrical rerelease?
My film is the way I cut it. The other films were changed — a lot. My film, I can tell you just what was done. The Snow Creature [Wampa] was added, which was good for merchandising. It was okay, but I could have lived without it.

Empire Of Dreams Review
Time
I concur, seeing the original...in all of its poor quality glory had something special to it as well. I'd never thought I'd say that, as I am a huge A/V buff loving HD and 5.1 surround, but it did. It reminded me of the first time I saw them. While I'd love to see the cleaned up/remastered.revamped picture and sound, it was special seeing it as a golden oldie. And seeing how it almost never was. It was an excellent documentary.

Star Wars Media Day article

Well in these interviews from "media/fans"

It comes out that the #1 topic of near angry proportions is why no original trilogy. Suprised? I think not here.

Next, they wanted deleted scenes (this would help us solve the #1 problem at least ourselves), nope, none.

The answer was interesting though in that those are being saved and restored to HD-DVD...so the debate over an Ultimate release is moot. It will happen on HD-DVD/Blu-RAY. Of course we don't know if even at that point we'll get the OT, but its getting rediculous...every review I have read and I've read more than 20 now, all mention it. "Where is the OT?" Maybe its possible we'll get it on this next HD release, if not we'll get deleted scenes (hopefully that'll include scenes he altered - restored to HD so we can fix it, even if he doesn't).

Key paragraph below...

Straight from the horse's mouth

While it was very nice to see the bonus material demonstrated, the real heart of the day's material came from the panelists who fielded questions from the audience.

First off, we got a three-person panel consisting of Rick Dean (the THX technical director), John Lowry (the head film restoration expert), and Van Ling (the DVD producer and menu designer). Jim Ward also contributed some insights. The hottest issue of the day revolved around the ever-controversial "special edition vs. original edition" topic, as the first question to come from the audience had to do with how Lucas could justify releasing an altered version of Star Wars when he'd publicly excoriated the colorization of the original black-and-white Three Stooges films. Jim Ward took up the reply here, pointing out that Lucas felt very strongly in the artist's right to choose the presentation of his own material, and that while the Stooges weren't around to give the OK to colorization, Lucas himself, as the artist, had every right to decide which version of the Star Wars films to release. After several other pointed questions from the audience on the topic of the special editions (clearly everyone in the audience would have preferred the originals), Ward simply stressed that George Lucas had made it very clear that the special editions of the films represent most closely what he really wanted to do with the films, and wasn't able to do on the first pass due to budgetary and technical limitations.

One interesting question raised by an audience member touched on the absence of deleted scenes from the bonus material. Ward commented that with so much material from the Star Wars archives, they simply had to pick and choose what to fit on the disc. He then went on to imply that at least some material from the archives was being saved for later releases of the set on later formats like HD-DVD.

In my mind, the most interesting panelist was film restoration expert John Lowry, who explained that even though the films had theoretically been restored for the 1997 special editions, the prints were in terrible condition, and that it was the most exhaustive (and, I think, exhausting) restoration process that his team had ever attempted. He touched on specific technical issues such as matching up the image quality of special effects shots with the live-action shots (since the former, due to the nature of the effect creation process, were always in worse condition than the latter), and even commented that it's possible to restore "too much" (for instance, if the restored transfer starts to reveal detail like makeup lines that the director never intended to be seen) and that part of the process is knowing when to stop. It was amusingly clear that Lowry is a total perfectionist, as he mentioned that his team had only 30 days to spend on each film, and he would have wanted to spend even more time restoring them. He dryly commented that "We don't usually have to deal with a living director," and added that doing so was "a pain in the ass." But he went on to add that being able to work with Lucas meant that he could find out how far to go with the restoration: for instance, in some scenes he had to touch up the film itself to correct flaws that were revealed once all the dirt and grime had been removed from the transfer, and slight grain had to be added to the newer "special edition" scenes to make them visually compatible with the rest of the film.

Star Wars 2004 OT SE DVD release preview!
Time
I just read the IGN review as well...

A New Hope has the most problems, and not where you think. The glaring example is when Grand Moff Tarkin grills Princess Leia for the location of the rebel base or he would toast Alderan. This is simply a conversation between the two, but as the scene cuts from one shot to another, the audio quality rises and drops notably. One angle sounds soft and muffled, while another angle is clear and sharp.

...It also mention very notable scan lines in Ep. IV. and gave the video and 8/10. The guy that was remastering the picture said he could have used another year.

Nice.

Star Wars 2004 OT SE DVD release preview!
Time
ok, some (like me) were planning on buying it to work from as source material for future edits or to show off a kick ass A/V system...THX/Widescreen/DTS...right?????

Wrong! No DTS is this boxset, as a matter of fact, this is his review of the sound...

In Fox’s view there is nothing wrong with the sound and they will not recall any discs. I compared the sound of this scene on the dvd with the same scene on the VHS version from 1997. I can hear no tonal differences between the lines on the latter. To me it seems like the sound of the VHS version is better than the sound of the dvd version in this particular scene. I must admit that feels rather strange.

Because of this flawed sound, I cannot give this edition of Star Wars: A New Hope more than 7 out of 10 in this category. The other two movies both receives the top score since I couldn’t hear any flaws there.

...UHHHH, that sucks...THE STAR WARS TRILOGY, A 7/10 for sound, muffled in parts, clear in others, no DTS soundtrack. HMMM. That sucks. Rock on George Lucas! I knew you were going to butcher the content but to make the sound at parts worse than VHS, awesome!

Episode III on EBAY?
Time
BTW with Episode III on ebay...

It lists there are 66 copies available, but...It also says "The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing." An error like ummm bullshit, on GL's crew, or the EBAY crew.

Though it must be real because it says its an advance copy like those for universities and "aeroplanes"...uhhh ok. Didn't know that Delta gets blockbusters a year ahead of time. If that was true a whole lot more plane companies wouldn't be operating in the black. I mean if people are will to over 15 times what a boxset will retail for in just 7 more days for movies they've seen a hundred times...I think people would go crazy to see this movie a whole year ahead of time, a movie they've never seen. People would taking a lot of flights for no reason other than the movie!

Paramount is crazy like that though, they like to steal GL's stuff and release it before he can to the booming UK airline industry (region 2).

This is a good quote "If this Proves Popular i can Provide other Blockbusters"...hmm...can you now? He's got X-Men 3, the Hobbit, Episode 7,8,9, and star wars the lost cut ready to roll. He can make fake covers all day long, no telling how many titles he can bullshit.

"WATCH THIS BEFORE ANYONE ELSE - After all why should you wait for Giant corporations to Advertise and Merchandise"

This is a good question. Screw the man. Our movie industry should lie in this man's hands. Power to the people.

I have seen many lists of potential chages to the OT and that is on nearly all of them. So while it may piss us off, it may be there, unless it is addressed in Ep.III that they bring men in too. Maybe there is a modulator in the helmet...and they make Han and Luke sound like the clones too...who knows with GL, do not feel safe with logic...he's failed us many times before. Come 9/21 there will be threads galore on changes.

What did we all expect from the Prequel Trilogy?
Time
Figirin' Dan was right on the money. I expected something more mature, something darker. If these are troubled times and something evil is moving behind the scenes let us feel this. The slaves (anakin and his mother) being held captive by...Watto...a flying CG character with a dirty Italian accent. Bad. It could've been darker there. No Jar-Jar, flat out, GL was lazy with CG and overused it. When CG is combined with slapstick and regular characters all I think of is...Roger Rabbit. Jar-Jar, Dex, Watto, Gungans, those retarded Roger-Roger droids...its overkill. The ships looked more real in the old trilogy when they were models. I say only use CG here and there to add to the movie not become the movie (LOTR used it appropriately). I really would've like to have seen more darth maul (didn't GL learn his lesson when he killed of Boba in a stupid way). Maul and Obi-wan should've been the main characters. There is no central character. BTW, dooku was stupid and not threatening in the least (unless we were given a darker back story). I expected Anakin to not be a whoopie type of kid and a whiny brat as a teen. Irritating, whether that is realistic or not, I don't want it. This is a kid held captive in slavery in a very seedy place, less whoopie and more harsh world quietly poignant (haley-joel osment in Sixth Sense for Episode I would've worked). The more music is a good point, there is music, but we needed more of the original score. The Yoda is Episode I is worse than the Yoda of 1981, why? No the CG worked pretty well for Yoda in Episode II, but still could be better to me (gollum?!)

What kills me is when I watch the deleted scenes with commentary in Episode II and every scene GL says this would've added alot to the plot or developed the characters. And they did, I liked almost all those scenes. Yet, he dropped them for time he says. So we get that crappy scene with Anakin riding that Bull thing in the pasture wooing padme...c'mon. We get a little brat telling Obi-wan the planet is gone...rrggh, that's irritating on two counts, Obi-wan is a jedi and its cooler for him to figure it out himself...but also GL puts a wise little kid here that has the good life, but a kid in poverty and slavery (anakin Ep.I) is all whoopie?!

As hypersonic5 pointed out in his editing of Ep.I the use of accents for aliens instead of languages (which Magnolia added back) was atrocious. Dex, Watto, Jar-Jar, Boss Nass...unacceptable.

I felt like someone stabbed me in the heart after sitting there watching Episode I for the first time, something I was so excited about went sooo wrong.

Basically, I feel like my signature down below. That's a long time to not get something right. Then when you see a new trilogy like LOTR look so polished, have extended cuts...it makes you sick inside to know that the greatest trilogy of all time didn't get a prequal trilogy on par with those. I feel like throwing up just speaking about this.

1) giving alien races cultural accents rather than language. Having Threepio translate Artoo, and Han repeat back to Chewie everything he said was genius. It worked so well. Because there's so few subtitles, you don't notice as much, but much of the original trilogy was communicated without English. Both new movies fail here, it's either cultural accents (mexican for the junk shop dealer, vaudeville for the announcer, Japanese for the trade federation) or subtitles, and the universe isn't as good.

2) contrived settings. Why the crap is Amidala holding an audience in full dress on her transport ship, to "commend" a droid? Doesn't make sense. And so forth. Doesn't feel natural.

3) obviously the script was written in "higher language." Anakin and Padme don't use contractions very much, for example. However, they still behave and act like normal people you'd see in a TV mini-series. This disconnect makes the whole thing feel unnatural and forced. If you don't have Sir Alec Guinness, you can't expect a shakespearean performance so don't write shakespearean.

4) the movies rush along to endpoints. Lucas is trying to get from Old Republic to the start of A New Hope. He has certain conditions to be met, and the movie seems to be driven by navigating from condition to condition (war, empire, anakin to vader, marraige so that luke and leia can be born...) rather than unfolding naturally. It's a tough situation to be in, and it seems to be too much for Lucas. Again, they feel unnatural.

That being said, as I get used to them, the movies get better. I liked AOTC just because it was exciting. Going back to TPM, I realized there were just a few sticking points ("ye gods" - jarjar (hello? gods? in this universe? it hurt me., midichlorians, "there was no father", "are you an angel?", the attack planning scene with stilted dialogue) and the rest of the movie plugs along pretty well. Like my four points above, AOTC suffers from most of the same problems. A few less major sticking points, but still forced. In the end, it was a fun romp with an exciting battle and tie-together, with a good lead in to the next movie, so I left happy.

Excellent Analysis Starboy. I agree wholeheartedly.

Quote

My first realization was that because of the Star Wars name, I had expectations which led me to dislike the movies. Later I also realized that without the Star Wars name, I would have watched them once, enjoyed them, and never thought of them again.

This is truly poignant. Those movies in the end are just pretty good or ok. Though Magnolia did improve them greatly. For me there is no question which one I like better, its definitely ATOC. And maybe its for all the reason someone gave earlier in this thread...Jake Lloyd's "whoopie", JAR_JAR in my sleep he taunts me as the most obnoxious character ever created (I wish I had the technology to delete him out or get the pre-CG cut of the film), the two headed announcer, watto and the greasy italian thing (that statement about accents and not languages is on the money), gungan's, the roger-roger droids with their retardedness their voices and the way they fight its like three-stooges stupidity, poor CG (it was much better by ATOC, but still could use less), not enough Darth Maul...WHY DEAR GOD, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT"S HOLY and RIGHT...WHY DOES JAR-JAR live and get tons of screen time and DARTH MAUL WHO KICKS MAJOR ASS DIES, GETS LITTLE BY WAY OF PLOT OR SCREEN TIME? WHY???????? Damn. Anakin beating up a little Greedo, lame...anything greedo now royally pisses me off, especially a little kid version. Oh and a really bad yoda in TPM. There is just so much that irritates me, I can't let the story flow in my mind.

My own edit of Episode I (my 'The Perfect Edit') (Completed)
Time
I am suprised Rikter or Magnolia haven't commented on this yet. I'd like to know what kind of software everyone uses for DV editing/sound mixing. HS5 you use Sony vegas, but I know alot of people use Avid Express, Pinnacle Liquid, adobe Premiere Pro, Canopus DV storm, and some others. I guess I'd really like to know what MagFan uses b/c its done so well.

This is the best site I've found for selling that stuff and reviews...

The Video Guys

I am planning in the next year on getting a top of the line computer to do editing...maybe dual proc, definitely NVIDIA's SLI to bridge to videocard's...sick, PCIexpress is about to blow up. And alot of rendering power will be in a common man's hands. Oh and you'll finally be able to play Doom3 at its highest settings...512mb GPU, 2 gigs DDR ram., 4GHz processor, its disgusting but they made it as an engine to be used for several years so its made for tomorrow's systems...ok I am getting off-topic.

Anyway, I'd like to do some editing of many movies, beyond star wars. So I'd love to hear feedback. I am sure HS5 would like more feedback on his movie too.

is there anyway GL will digitally restore the old scene of han shooting first for comparison? God it sounds like fanboy wishing, but we could edit it back in. All Stormtroopers with Jango's voice
Time
well I guess what I mean is han amd Luke call up to the stormtrooper after the laserblast in the MF to come up and help (this wouldn't work now as their voices are different). Luke and Han upon entering that detention center control room with Chewie in cuffs explain why they are there in the stormtrooper outfits (now this doesn't work). Han after shooting everyone, gets on the Mic and says everythings all fine here, they start asking questions, then he shoots it...they'd know right away and not ask questions. Luke talks to Leia for a minute before she says "you're kind of short to be a stormtrooper"...now she'd now right off the bat. Right???

You know I was watching the original "A New Hope" on DVD (thanks Rikter) yesterday and thinking to myself there is a number of scenes where Han and Luke have the Stormtroopers outfits on and the scene when Han calls over the intercom to say everythings alright here...if they are all going to sound like Jango and in fact be clones...wouldn't there voices be different and stand out in suit or out. Not sure if this makes sense to you I certainly could have wrote it better, but I have been sick the last couple of weeks...and tired...though I have been watching more star wars.
