The Forgotten Scenes
Time
That's awesome magnolia. You know, I think it'd be cool to have a version using the screentests, the choppy lost cuts, pictures, storyboards with the film spliced in order. Though it wouldn't be awesome to watch over and over and certainly not a theatrical pleasure...it would clarify what the orginal story was and some of what we've lost over time. Mark Hamill, still wants those intro scenes with him looking through the binoculars and then the two scenes with Biggs cut back in. It may never happen, but I'd love to hear and see it some order of the original script even if it looks crappy.

Bushido of Star Wars
Time
I found this on another board...interesting post this guy made...

The mother of all sci fi movies. Really is about World War 2. The Empire / Rebel conflict parallels the Axis / Allies. The Millenium Falcon is just a B52, and Han a bomber pilot. Notice how the locales translate to the arenas the war was fought: the deserts of Africa, the forests of the Ardennes and Europe, and the tundra of Russia. We get tanks, squadron fighters, the bushido code of the Japanese, the polished techno-evil of the Nazis, the terrorizing, hypnotic power of Adolf Hitler (very similar-sounding to Darth Vader), and throughout, the mysticism of Judeo-Christianity, i.e. the plight of the chosen ones. Luke and Leia are Biblical / Semitic names. Of course, when I was 8, all I saw at the time was the greatest spectacle I ever experienced in a movie theater. It completely changed my life, and I understood what movies are supposed to be about. Lucas really did something special with this film. But the underlying text would make an interesting thesis though.

The Forgotten Scenes
Time
BTW, the deleted scenes are the
1. cantina scene, fully, extended with extra creatures, jenny (hans's girlfriend) and the bartering on the MF, etc.
2. The two Biggs scenes one where looks runs in the bar and they all go out and look at the sky, the second with Biggs telling him about the rebellion
3. There is a scene where luke running through town runs under a creature on stilts legs
4. The scene outside of the MF where they go look around
5. The scene at the begining where luke is looking at the sky, his robot breaks down and he gets in the landspeeder
6. A scene with Biggs where the pilots are getting prepped on the death star
7. a scene with at home with "mom"
I think if memory serves...
All are very sketchy looking, but still interesting.

The Forgotten Scenes
Time
Well A couple weeks ago I found a 2 DVD and a VCD set on the UK ebay. I have always been fascinated by the lost footage, especially the famed lost cut of the original.

DVD 1 - The Complete Archives - This has the Making of Star Wars Documentary, the Original Theatrical Trailers, Classic Creatures, and A Flight through Asteroids - A stroryboard comparison.

DVD 2 - The forgotten scenes - This is what I was looking for, kind of. It is disappointing, certainly not good versions of the scenes but it has a number and mostly it is pictures, in a slideshow format. But they are in order and gives you an expalnation for the group of pictures and some video you might see. Once the idea of having footage to cut back into a new edit was gone, I enjoyed it. Its at least worth a once or twice through. It has pictures for the Ep. 5 and 6 as well.

The VCD - A Long Time Ago - Interestingly this was the most compelling of all of them. There was a rough cut of footage, storyboard animation, and drawings all from the movies that show the celebration scene in its extended glory from ROTJ as GL wanted it, I guess. Not sure how long ago this was spliced, but it looks old (pre-Naboo?). Further, it shows the screentests, edited in with the deleted scenes in an order that makes sense storywise, explaining some of the missing scenes. Now the screentests are with a variety of actors and in bad shape, but interesting nonetheless.

Lastly, I made a CD of the clips I pulled from T-Bonz site of deleted scenes and lost trailers for Quicktime/WMA.

So, Alas I tried, its not what I hoped for, but not a total loss either. I will pass this stuff along to Rikter and MagnoliaFan for their perusal to see if they can use it for anything. I dont have a DVD- burner, so Rikter I will send you the discs and you can copy them and pass them along to magnolia for me.

Thought you guys may be interested. They may be able to rework these and add some of what comes out on the new box set to make something interesting. Thought I'd let you all know. And please don't spend the 40 bucks on this...I did that, they'll use it for something if they can, and maybe let the rest of you know.

Magnolia your version is much better. I like it. You make them concise and deliberate as we want our menacing evil and prevailing good characters to be. Strong, knowledgable and assertive. All these lines Lucas is doing with "umm" "I think" "uhhh" "huh" "how is that" etc...irritating! And why doesn't he just have the commentary by him be the audio of the film. "OK this is the emperor you're seeing now as the senator, ok this is anakin liking the senator now and being pissy...you can see where this is going, but I am going to beat it into you 10 more times assuming you are retarded." Dubbing over all lines, spelling everything out for us and explaining how this crap was his vision all along, why he hates the fans that made it what it is so he could tinker with it in the first place, and really say why its all so much better NOW. Damn.

I know the very basis of the board means most are against changes to the original trilogy, but this is one taking place in the new Empire Strikes Back 2004 DVD. Is this one you can live with? It adds consistency, which I guess is fine (although if were playing the all or nothing game for changes - it'd be none for me). My biggest complaint with this is he does not look ominous...Clive Revell looks cooler.

Comparison shot:

You know if someone could simply shadow around the eyes more and give it a bit more glow, I'd take the new one, but then thats kind of a cleaned up version of the old one, oh well. Why is it Luca$ has to spell everything, I mean everything out now in I-III, whatever mystery that was there in IV or V is now ruined.

Best Bootleg DVDs
Time
the anamorphic is excellent. I got my set from rikter with great cover art and disc art. The supplementals disc is amazing and if picture is where its at for you, there's no question. If you have a widescreen 16:9 format...this is the one to one. It is pretty much consensus that the anamorphic has more extras, better picture, but the TR47 does have stronger sound. Not to say the anamorphic is not good for sound, it is...though the tr47 does trump it. While I'd like a mix of two to exist...which a better DL dvd may make happen, I'd pick the anamorphic every time. And why spend a ton of money on a DL, when the box set is coming out and technology is improving and with a year we'll have what we all want a really, really great copy of the OT (done the right way).

The Original Trilogy - Laser Disc Conversion Thread

I guess I had this in the back of my mind too. Everyone keeps saying how we'll just fix it after the box set comes out, and Magnolia I know you can do great things with film but this is tough.

OT vs. SE vs. 2004 comparison thread with pics

I've keep saying somehow this will work and I am not sure it will unless. We get the deleted scenes. My god imagine if he show each original scene (cleaned up) with the changed one (e.g. Greedo) and he could do some commentary track on why he made his crappy changes, etc. but we'd have both with the great pciture and sound and then the real OT's could be made. I hope this so much. Otherwise it may look odd and the splice will be fairly obvious.
