This is not proof that the sabers have been 'fixed.' They are too similar to the original. What we are seeing could just be the result of re-mastering.

It appears to me that the lightsaber blend in front of the Emperor is the result of the video compression or something. I really don't think it will be like that on the DVD. And how can anyone possibly be disappointed that it is not being fixed? It never appeared this way to begin with.

Show me some links to what has been said about these so called 'ultimate editions.'

What has been referred to in the past as the 'ultimate editions' has centered either around that rather long and superfluous fan-boy wish list that circulated last year or the actual official release planned for later this year. What you are thinking the 'ultimate editions' will be is nothing more than a fan-boy rumor that is being perpetuated by ignorant fans like yourself who believe anything they hear.

BTW, since you put so much stock in what the digital bits say, they have also reported that the Han/Greedo scene would be restored to its original glory. And we all know that's won't happen.

After finally seeing the French trailer I am not convinced that the sabers have been altered. It looks like any anomalies may simply be the result of color and balance and re-mastering. And the Death Star explosion appears to be the same as the Special Edition. However, the cell bay definitely looks altered. I made some comparison shots you can check out here. On the screenshots I took of the originals I adjusted the brightness and cropped the sides to more closely match the French trailer.

Also, for those who haven't yet been able to see the French trailer, I edited the relevent parts out so everyone could see them for themselves. Download here. (1.7MB)

PAR or 'Parity' files are used to reconstruct missing files. They are very popular in binary newsgroups which is where I suspect this copy originated from. You might try running QuickPar to see if any data is recovered.

Fan-boy myth! No matter how many times I've listened to it I have never heard anything that even sounds like "Carrie!" I think Luke just says "Hey!" Here's the truth:

Regarding the Tarkin scene- that appears, at least to me, to be an error that occured at the time of capture. Like the camera was abruptly turned off and then turned back on. It's a really bad cut between scenes. Tarkin is still on the last consonant of the word "operational" when the scene cuts.

BTW, MF, I tried to respond to your PM but I don't think your PMs are turned on. Send me an email - obiwanspicoli at austin dot rr dot com.

There are many 'flipped' shots like the one MrCoffee refers to. It's sometimes necessary to maintain screen direction.

When Luke is looking for R2 with the macrobinoculars you can clearly see a rope pulling a droid across the screen.

In the shot where Luke and Ben first see the Millennium Falcon the Falcon has no radar dish. This is because only half of the Falcon was constructed for this scene. But I think a dish could have been matted in fairly easily.

After the Falcon takes off from Mos Eisley, Ben can still be seen walking out of the cockpit - after he had already strapped himself in at the chess table.

Right after Gold Leader says "Red Leader this is Gold Leader" the two Y-Wings outside his cockpit window disappear for a frame.

Right after Vader says "I have you now" the TIE fighter on the left disappears for a couple of frames.

Have the 'one last time' 1995 Laser Discs been converted to DVD?
Time
Like Rikter said, the THX (faces) set uses the same transfer as the Definitive laserdiscs. It's the same films, the same sound mix. The only difference between them is the Definitive LDs are CAV (3 discs per film) and the THX LDs are CLV (2 discs per film.) CAV is known as standard play and CLV is known as extended play. Without going into details, CAV is typically considered to be better.

As others have mentioned, nothing has been confirmed aside from the re-mastered sound. What changes we have heard about are merely rumor, despite what jimbo says. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Hayden thing turned out to be a hoax. It makes no sense, even in George's dilluted world.

I have a short clip of what is alleged to be the new Han/Greedo scene. I think it's legit. So I believe this change, at least, to be real.

What do you mean by not the same voice? The voice that says "close the blast doors" is certainly not the same voice that says "open the blast doors." But "close the blast doors" was not recorded or re-recorded for the Special Edition. That line, in the exact same voice, is in the original 1977 theatrical release.

I've got the original "close the blast doors" line in addition to all Beru's lines from the mono version of the film on the "Story of Star Wars" LP. Very good sound quality. The Special Editon version of the blastdoors line was re-recorded for some bizarre reason - maybe they lost the original master for the voice on this? I have a high quality record deck and can send you these if you'd like on a CD as WAV files. You could then splice these into the NTSC version of your DVD's. They'de have to speed up by 4% for PAL versions I believe.

PM me if your interested.

Cheers!

I no longer have the Story of Star Wars album so I can't listen to the voice on it. But I can tell you in absolute certainty that the "Close the blast doors" voice on the Special Edition is the exact same voice that is in the 1977 theatrical film with the mono sound mix. It's quite possible that the SOSW album used a different recording or take. John, do you have it in a format you could email? I'd really like to hear it.

What makes this particular set the nearest thing to an official release?

Here's something weird. I did a search on Google the other day and endorforest.com came up as a sponsered link. How can they get away with that?

Patrick

The Special Edition has both lines. Prior to that, the only version with both lines was the original theatrical release with the mono sound mix. But that version has never seen a home video release.
