So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...

What I mean is, original sound effects that were not tarted up (notably in the cell block sequence), blaster hits that were toned down (also notably in the same sequence). These changes were already made before 1993, I believe. Unless the film is restored to 1977 conditions in every aspect, it is not the original theatrical release. And one false advertising claim leads me to question other advertising claims.

Neil, I don't know who you are, but it quite one thing to make verifiable observations about differences in films, merely as a consumer ... and entirely another thing to make definitive statements about product releases of entertainment corporations, as a consumer.

That said, I am also willing to contemplate that retailers broke up the sets on their own. But there is no evidence of that, beyond your word.

Calling people 'delusional' does not help your credibility, in my eyes.

And I don't appreciate being called delusional, with the implication that I am a liar.

There's no need to photograph DVDs at the local Best Buy, since they could easily be faked. In any event, I really don't think any are going to be on the shelves less than a week from a re-release, and I don't think we need to feed the troll any more on this issue.

Yep, they've been available as individuals here at California retailers since at least last Xmastime.

All the talk about wobble and artifacts and crappy looking whatever is making me a bit nervous ... but - since my standards for a 1977 film are merely to reproduce how it looked as a 1977 film, perhaps I won't be terribly disappointed.

I am NOT holding Star Wars up to a 2006 produced and DVD-mastered level. If it looks as it did 30 years ago, I will be satisfied. If, on the other hand, the whole thing shakes like a bowl of jello ... I am going to cry.

What movies do you consider canon?

Hence why this scene is redundant. Hence why a good director would have left it on the cutting room floor, and not for the reason of effects technology limitations.

(Sorry, this scene is one of my peeviest pet peeves about the revisions to Star Wars. Rightful editing room rejects brought back to life just gets my goat, or starwars duck, or whatever animal makes a mad, growling sound)

This is not meant to derail, or to criticize anyone's personal canon choices.

Selectable crawl on new DVD? Or just the old one?
Time
The Empire of Dreams footage of the crawl was really shoddy, and I'm not going to judge its coloration as the proper version.

I don't much care if the color of the text is correct (who will ever be able to say for sure?). What I do care about is the typesetting done correctly. That is verifiable.

I would also very much like it if the timing to the music cue was correct, but I have only my 30-year-old memories to go by on that issue. So my bar is set pretty low at mere typesetting accuracy. Let's hope they pass that meager test.

For me, Star Wars is the only thing that's canon.

If so much of the story hadn't been subsequently changed, I could consider the other two films of the O.T. as "canon" ... but Darth Vader being Luke's father, Princess Leia his sister are drastic revisions that are at odds with what's presented in the first movie.

I think of the Star Wars universe as having many concentric layers of EU, kind of like nested Russian dolls. Episodes 5 & 6 are one layer of expanded universe, not entirely matching the original. The prequels are a further layer, further removed. Shadows of the Empire yet another outer layer, and the other EU materials - games and novels that I've never even experienced - a still further away layer of expanding information .... but like the game 'telephone,' each new incarnation suffering from a bit of expanded miscommunication.

Star Wars is it. The rest are shadows and reflections - often interesting, sometimes entertaining. But none of it the real thing.

What it was like to experience Star Wars for the first time in 1977.

JediFlyer06, that was wonderful. I want to read the entire short story of your first Star Wars experience in childhood!

As for my Phantom Menace experience ... well it was a month of fantastic fun ... right up until, oh, 5 minutes after midnight on opening night.

I would never have imagined, though, that three years later my disappointment with Episode I would pale in comparison to my loathing of Revenge of the Sith.

Ok, the prequels themselves have been a big disappointment, but I have to say that I've had more Star Wars fun with them on the whole, simply because the line-ups went on for weeks.

Agreed. If all they've done is remove the Ep IV ANH and otherwise left the crawl alone, I will raise a bloody stink about false advertising. In fact, I will follow the dubious advise of BadAss Keith and file suit, albeit in Small Claims Court, for my $20. I would publicize that lawsuit as much as possible.

I'm hoping none of this will be necessary. I won't sue for the lack of other changes that will likewise make the claim of "original theatrical version" a false one. But the original crawl or a completely faithful recreation OR I WILL SUE.

These things never enter into my head at all. Lucas has no power over me.

And I'll go you one better .... when I watch Star Wars, Princess Leia is not even Luke's sister, and Darth Vader is not his daddy.

What it was like to experience Star Wars for the first time in 1977.
Time
Maybe it was the venue of the Chinese Theater, but when I saw Star Wars SE about six times in '97, the audience went wild at the Death Star climax each and every time, laughed at the Cantina scene, and - for the most part - experienced the film as if they hadn't seen it a hundred times.

By that time, of course, I had. And my experience the first time 20 years earlier was fantastic. I lived on Long Island, New York - - far, far away from the glorious Chinese Theater in Hollywood. But I saw the film on the biggest screen in Long Island ... which was the biggest screen I had seen in my young (16 year old) life.

I remember trying not to be impressed at first. Sure, word had been out for a couple of weeks that this movie ruled, and yes I had to wait four hours in line to see it. This alone was a first for me, but I remained cynical ... for oh, about 3 minutes. When the huge Stardestroyer passes overhead and you could hear the collective gasp of the huge audience ... I sat there thinking ' yeah, this looks cool 'cause its gigantic, but it's the same effect they used in Space 1999, and that title crawl was just ripped off from Buck Rogers.' A minute later, though, Darth Vader made his first appearance. The audience instinctively hissed at his arrival, reacting unabashedly with fun and involvement. And I started to glimpse the genius of this retro throwback of a movie done with a spectacular modern sensibility.

The Cantina scene was a comedy showstopper. The Millennium Falcon's escape from the Death Star brought down the house. And the climactic space battle with the forgone conclusion telegraphed in text at the beginning of the film had a thousand people cheering in exultant surprise.

I had two personal moments in the movie where I increasingly "got it," but I can't say that was true of the audience as a whole. What I can attest to is that the crowd loved it. Laughter and applause peppered the entire film. And the lines to get in just got longer and longer, the mania erupted on the world stage, while the only things to buy were some t-shirts, posters and the soundtrack album (I went through six copies). Despite the lack of consumer product, the initial exhuberance of the Star Wars phenomenon outshone anything that came along later with toys galore and Burger King tie-ins.

It changed the world.

(a little bit)

And I'm really glad I was there, old enough to appreciate what was going on, young enough to be swept away.

Star Trek gets better treatment than Star Wars...
Time
I'm gonna give this a wait and see. I don't think there's much point to it, but neither do I think it's total blasphemy.

I am not really fond of even the most "harmless" change to Star Wars effects ... say, for example, the Sandcrawler shots which most people find to be improvements. I do not. I don't like the artificiality of them. CGI looks different than models ... perfect "artist's rendering" skies look different than real skies. Even though these replacement shots do nothing to destroy the integrity of the movie, I do not care for them.

Star Trek might be a different story, though, and I'm willing to wait and see. Having the originals available is always a plus ... and perhaps these will be genuine improvements. Having said that - - the art direction of the show reeks of the 60's (not necessarily in a bad way) ... and I'm not sure improved effects won't look entirely out-of-place.

2006 OT DVD: Poll: So What are You Going to Do?
Time
Not to put anyone down .... but I'm glad my love of Star Wars and consideration of it to be fun are not dependent upon the modern-day actions or inactions of George Lucas or his company.

My memories surrounding the movies and the dozens of times I've seen them in theaters, the insane line-ups for the openings of the movies and all the fun with friends at those, the playing with the toys and all the fun I had with friends with them, the little bit of collecting over the years, the goofy fun I still have from time-to-time with Star Wars buddies, and my genuine love of the movie Star Wars as one of the best films ever made .... all these sustain my love for Star Wars and will keep it fun for me till the end of my days.

Apart from whether it's cool to re-do the 60's TV effects (which I dispute), there's the matter of how well that can be done while remaining faithful to the originals. I have noticed in the world that when craftspeople copy other works, the results are bad. And yet when those same craftspeople and artists work on something new, the results shine.

I think the whole idea of re-doing the past is a stupid one. Both in principal and in the feasibility of achieving the desired goal of improvement.

Time
Which would have been worth it to me, if the O.T. were treated to a top-quality release.

Failing that, the '07 box will be just about the first Star Wars release I haven't purchased. I've got 3 frelling versions of Star Wars on laserdisc alone, probably another 3 on VHS, and then the SE set on DVD and even two of the frelling prequels. Sheesh. September 12 is where I finish ... until better quality releases of the unaltered O.T.

I have ZERO interest in either the evolving Special Editions or the pathetic prequels. But anytime Lucas cares to release Star Wars in ever increasing quality baby steps, he's got my money.
