OK, WTF is going on here?

Oh... one other thing this morning. You know how we were complaining a few months back that the original versions of the Star Wars films (due on 9/12) were going to look less than stellar in 15-year old, non-anamorphic, laserdisc-transfer quality video on DVD? A few thousand fans finally got a look at them at the Lucasfilm presentation at Comic-Con on Friday afternoon. Lucasfilm's Steve Sansweet had this to say to the assemblage: "The transfers from the bonus discs are absolutely incredible, because these are pristine master tapes, and I have NEVER seen - despite what you may have heard on Internet rumors - a better transfer of a movie."

I'm still not getting my hopes up, but taking a wait and see approach. I just a straight answer at this point. Jeez.

[SARCASM]I feel so much better. A Lucasfilm employee has reassured us that the transfer is the best ever. [/SARCASM]

Those "Takes You Out Of The Moment" Moments...

Some of the rocks were pretty heavy, and didn't they practically bury some stormtroopers with them? That might hurt a bit more. But yes, I also thought they had Ewoks run them through with spears, arrows, etc...

As for my biggest "take you out of the moment" moment, it would have to be Jabba the Hutt in the SE. Ignoring the badly done CGI, this scene is uses most of the exact same dialouge of the Greedo scene earlier, and it shows a very stupid and easly fooled Jabba. Why would Jabba be out collecting his debts himself with all the thugs he has? And he lets Han walk on his tail? If Han talks his way out of trouble with Jabba that easly, why did he worry about him at all? This is clearly not the vile Jabba in ROTJ.

I thought the crummy plot, obsession with neon, and too many butt shots had something to do with it as well.

As for the Superman Returns sequel, I'm sorry to hear that it may not happen. For all my dislike of many of the elements of Superman Returns, It has been years since we've seen Superman in the theatres in any form. Now it may be another 20+ years or more until someone decides to try again with Superman. As a Superman fan, I'm sorry to think that may be the case.

It sounds like we are mostly in agreement here now. Now that reconciled world religion, lets move on to something else... lol
One of the major goals of most world religions is to better yourself and to make the world a better place as a result. All religions have those who don't do that, be it by becoming too judgemental, dogmatic, legalistic, etc. I personally believe the bible. Someone else may believe something else. But in the end, most people seem to miss the similarities that we all share.

As a Christian, I have to put in a word. I hope I don't sound too preachy or anything, and if I do I'm sorry...
Just because many Christians aren't accepting like they should be doesn't mean Christianity as a whole is bad and should be written off as fake. If you look at the Apostles and the other early followers in the bible, you'll find very few 'upstanding' members of society. Most of them were tax collectors (seen as traitors for working for Rome and mostly dishonest), harlots, and other 'not nice' people. Jesus didn't reject them based on what they had done in their past or "the kind of person" they were, and neither should we today. As for the not understanding everything, that is where faith comes in. We can't understand everything everywere. This may be a silly example, but its what I can think of off the top of my head, but I don't have first-hand experience with getting run over by a truck, but I'm not going to walk out in the middle of the street to find out if I will actually get hurt if I get run over. I believe that my mom knew what she was talking about when she told me not to walk in the middle of the road when I was a kid. Some things we kind of have to accept in the end. We can come up with reasons, but no one can 'prove' some things. At least that is what I think, your beliefs may vary...

EDIT: Cleaned up a bit to make better sense...

SUPERMAN RETURNS REVIEW

I thought that Superman had pretty much settled that he couldn't be with Lois in Superman II. Or was this one of the things that made this a "sort of" sequel?
As for the 5 years away thing, I think that this is also a bit too much. Didn't he apologize for being gone is Superman II and letting Zod and company take over? So why did he just turn around and leave after promising not to do that again?

No, as someone commented earlier, Superman isn't perfect, but I think that many of the things he does in this movie aren't quite in character for him, in my opinion.

Odds are, that they aren't Lucasfilm-endorsed copies. Are they region free? if so, they are bootlegs.

For bonus material, the offical releases in September sure are getting advertised quite a bit. I've seen ads for them at a couple of local music/video stores around here. I think its pretty funny, actually. Especially with the treatment that they are getting. I'm beginning to think that this might backfire on them. Most people have no idea that the new releases will be so lousy yet. So they will buy them and get a consumer backlash for the bad quality discs. I doubt the "bonus material" line will get them very far. Remember when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone came out on DVD? They made sure to advertise that it would have deleted scenes in it. But the scenes ended up being hidden away as easter eggs. They got a good deal of bad press and angry customers, and ended up having to apologize and publicize the way to access the hidden scenes. Maybe something similar will happen with this, and maybe we'll see a quality release before too long.

By this I mean if filmmaker 'X' wants to make a statement about capital punishment they should feel free to make a film about it- and let it be known that 'this is my statement about capital punishment'. Whereas when you go to see a Batman film you expect to see a Batman film... not a film which essentially stands as a homo-erotic fetishist's showcase of rubber nipples and oiled musclemen. At this point the audience disconnects and even if they can't put their finger on it they know something is wrong.

Sadly, this seems to be a thing with Superman. Christopher Reeve, while a great Superman, turned Superman IV into his own personal political statement on nuclear weapons, and it made for a lousy movie. Personal statements are very hard to fit into superhero movies without making a bad movie.

Thus the problem I see with 'Superman Returns'- audiences expected to see Superman but instead of a heroic, honorable and (gasp) patriotic character they saw a neurotic, brooding, stalking, whining, emo character who was painted as being the second coming of Jesus. And looking at the box office results the general public had that same disconnect.

Why must Superman have all the emotional problems, etc? Because the audience must be able to 'connect' with the hero? Why can't Hollywood accept that Superman is just a good person, and wants to do the right thing?

But very little of any of this has to do with Singer's (or anyone's) sexual orientation.

Agreed. Anyone can mess a movie up or make a great movie.

The major problem with Star Trek today is that there isn't really anything that is movie-worthy available to them. Voyager and DS9 I think isn't too familiar to the general movie-going public to be successful, and nobody would want to see an Enterprise movie, and TNG seems to be worn out. I don't think they really have much left but the Kirk and Spock in the academy idea, but I'm not certain that it will work.
Anyway, I like all the original Star Trek movies, and First Contact. Yes, even Star Trek 5, that nobody else cared for. The other TNG movies I didn't personally like very well.

Superman Returns Discussion - SPOILERS
Time
I actually don't think Zod belonged in Superman Returns. In Superman II, he was dropped to his death in the Fortress of Solitude. Even though Donner had him survive, nobody has seen this version, and would make Superman Returns even more confusing of a "semi-sequel", even though it does solve the problem of why did Superman skip out for 5 years.
I think in the end this whole sort-of a sequel to Superman II was basically to be able to skip the whole origin story, which would take up about half the film.

Superman Returns Discussion - SPOILERS
Time
My major problem with Superman Returns is that they seemed to feel that they needed to make Superman a "trendy" Batman-style hero who spends most of the time struggling with his own personal issues/inner doubts, as well as try to make the series "edger" and darker. While I like Batman, I personally hate that every comic hero now has to emulate him and become an embittered anti-hero.
And the whole Superman has a kid idea I thought was really stupid as well.
