SW Saga in 20 Minutes - Show in London
Time

Lucas has given permission for a 20 minute version all 6 Star Wars movies to be performed by a London, England based theatre. It is supposed to have all major plot points. Reading the article, they are known for their shortened versions of Shakespeare as well as other things. Might be an improvement in some of the prequel stuff. I thought it sounded interesting.

Poll: Who is more annoying, Lucas or McCallum?
Time
I also have to go with McCallum. For all of Lucas's problems and subborness as far as the prequels go, and his constant changes, at least Lucas has reasons, even if most disagree with him. McCallum is only a drone who doesn't seem to be able to think for himself, only say why Lucas is great. I might have more respect for him if he would come up with something that wasn't along the lines of "Lucas is a genius".

www.dvdempire.com O-OT pre-orders rankings (updated)
Time
It takes more than die-hard fans to generate sales to make these kind of rankings. It takes lots of casual fans and viewers as well. These numbers are starting to make me feel better, because I think the only chance we have of ever getting a high-quality O-OT on DVD from Lucas is high sales on this one. I think alot of the higher ranking of Star Wars and the lower ranking of ESB has to do with the fact that Star Wars has the most changes, and ESB has the fewest.

Some people thought Jagdleiter was AWK when he first came here because his high post count in a brief period of time, like AWK. However, he didn't exhibit any other AWK-like behavor, and since its been a while, he probably isn't AWK. Hopefully we don't have AWK back again. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I knew he caused problems around here, but I didn't know about the thing with PSYCHO_DAYV. That was terrible.

1977 70mm Soundtrack Recording (Released)

I might be wrong, but I think that Editdroid v1 does not have the actual 70 mm 6-track mix, but the authors used the 1985 LD audio remix, believing it to be the original 70 mm 6-track mix. No one has released the actual 70 mm mix until this audio recording was released.

IIRC, the 35 mm/70 mm mix was released first. However, many theatres in 1977 could only play mono sound, and could not play stereo sound. So they remixed the audio in the film in mono. They took more time for this, and also had the benifit of hindsight. Thus the changes in audio.

No explanation necessary (but we got one anyway)

Because you didn't bring up any of the real contradictions. There are contradictions, some of which I brought up in my last post that you didn't feel the need to address.

Ben (ROTJ): When I first knew him, your father was already a great pilot, but I was amazed at how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi. I thought that I could instruct him just as well as Yoda. I was wrong.

Read that line while you have images of TPM in your head. Does that really seem to match up with this?

Obi-Wan (TPM): The boy is dangerous. The council senses it. Why can't you?

Doesn't sound very amazed to me. Does he to you?

New Emperor scene: Well, I just want to ask you why you think it's better to watch them in numerical order. Since the prequels exist solely to explain the events in the original trilogy, doesn't that ruin the emotional impact? Also, the prequels contain so many "cool" in-jokes to the original trilogy that you simply wouldn't get if you didn't watch the originals first.

The big contradiction. How in the world does Leia remember her mother if her mother died three seconds after she was born? The way ROTJ Leia talks about her, it sounds like they were together for at least a few years before she died. It simply does not make sense that Leia would remember her and Luke not if they were both newborn infants. Explain that one, please.

Basically, they should of had the character of Qui-Gon to have been Obi-Wan instead. That would also make the ages of Obi-Wan and Anakin make more sense.

The problem is that there really is no 'proper viewing order' anymore. If you watch them in numerical order, you ruin the whole "I am your father" bit. I guess that release order (IV-VI;1-III) is better but that one then isn't in chronological order in my opinion leaves the series hanging without a happy ending. I personally like happy endings.

Leia remembering her mother: this is something that shows why prequels are hard to do. Yes, this is a contradiction. But I'm not sure that having Padme live would be a good idea. The character needed closure, and her death does that. Otherwise, you have the question of "whatever happened to Padme?" If she's dead, why? How did she keep her survival secret from Vader/Anakin. Why would she want to, when she seemed to think she could talk some sense back into Anakin and turn him back to the light side. I just don't see how Padme surviving through ROTS would work. But then you are stuck with the contradiction, and the lame attempts to explain it, which usually center around "its the force".

Of course, my personal things I wished they didn't explain was the rule of 2,which then messes up lots of stuff in the OOT. Why did Vader suggest turning Luke to the dark, if he knew there 'couldn't' be three sith? Why didn't Vader let Luke cut Palpatine down in ROTJ? Why couldn't there be three dark Jedi, all working together for evil (this is how I thought it would of worked if Luke turned, when I first saw ROTJ as a kid, and would still like to think of it today.)
I also hated the bit about Palpatine isn't that old in ROTJ, but he's just scarred. And why couldn't they get the make-up in ROTS match ROTJ? Did they not even see how the Emperor looked in that movie?

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)

So, shouldn't this project focus more on getting a decent German crawl in front of those already existing transfers, plus hi-quality German audio?

What might be a good idea is along this line of thought, is to capture some of the other alternate-language dub tracks into a release, such as French and Spanish, and have alternate crawls depending on which language was selected. Don't forget the subtitles for Greedo and Jabba would also need redone.

SUPERMAN RETURNS REVIEW
Time
Originally posted by: Han Solo VS Indiana JonesTo quote Sidney J. Furie, who had the misfortune of directing Superman IV: The Quest For Peace - "The truth is, whether your film is about the great mythological character you have to do right, or it's a little movie that nobody ever heard of, you still approach it like it's the most important thing in the world. But failing goes with the territory. Filmmakers are like gunslingers, and you don't win every duel."

On the same note, which do you think was worse - Superman III or Superman IV? For me it's a bit of a draw as they are both pretty poor and both waste ideas that could have made for fascinating films - #3 wasted the idea of what would happen if Superman turned evil and #4 wasted the idea of what would happen if Superman decided to tackle a political issue as global as the nuclear warfare issue. #3 had the lovely Annette O'Toole, good special effects and a crappy plot, #4 had the lovely Mariel Hemmingway, a slightly better story and crappy special effects. What say you all?

I personally liked 3 better than 4, but only because I'm probably the only person in the world who thought that Ross Webster was an interesting villian. Sort of like the comic's current version of Lex Luthor as a cold-hearted, ruthless businessman. But it did have a very long, dull, and overly drawn out plot and not much of any importance happens for most of the film. I can forgive the special effects of 4, but just the overall production values of the film seem cheap. I didn't really think Nuclear Man was that good of a villian. Hackman did a good job as Luthor, as usual, but his nephew, who's name I can't remember right now, was just irritating and too over the top stupid. Overall, Superman 4 seemed to be too much of a rehash of the earlier films for me to really think it was that good. But choosing between the two isn't as much which one is better, but which one is not as bad as the other one.
