The Silmarillion is unfinished. Therefore, it lacks that polish and cohesiveness. I personally found it a real chore to read, but not bad looking back on it. Not sure I'd read it again, though. Being that it has a slow building plot, few characters that continue throughout the entire book, and no real hero, at least not one who is in the entire book, I don't see how anyone can do a mini-series with it.

The Artistic Vision (TM Luca$hFilm)
Time
Lucas said many times that he loved watching Flash Gordon and serials as a kid, and based Star Wars roughly on them. I've heard the whole Lucas wanted to make Flash Gordon but couldn't get the rights thing, but I've also heard that isn't true. I think that people got that idea from hearing Lucas talk about watching Flash Gordon as a kid, and wanting to bring something like that back. But not Flash Gordon specifically. It wouldn't of made sense, especially considering the lenghts he went to to insure that he kept the rights to Star Wars, and not give them up to the studio. As for the Dune one, I have no idea on that one. The Star Trek idea I don't beleive, considering that Paramount had largely forgotten about Star Trek until Star Wars got big, and the Paramount execs were sitting around trying to figure out a sci-fi project they could come out with like Star Wars, and someone remembered Trek.

Lucas might of wanted to make fluff, and then got more deep and psychological after things like ESB. Indiana Jones would somewhat fit in with this, and is certainly a serial-type hero. Many of the scenes in that one were directly taken from serials made in the 30's and 40's.

General Batman Talk
Time
I always thought that they intentionally leave the Joker's background uncertain and different stories because of the Joker's insanity. But I don't follow the comics that closely. Question: In the Batman movie, the Joker's real name was Jack Napier. Is this his real name in the comics, or is it different, or uncertain? I thought that someone who is a bigger Batman comic fan than I once told me that they had more than one 'real name' for the Joker, meaning they all are probably fakes.

Intersting how the LD version looks so close to VHS quality. I guess those old LDs weren't as great as I thought they were. I always assumed LDs were nere DVD quality.

It depends on the individual LD. Some of them were better than others. For example, the earlier Star Wars releases were pretty bad compared to the definitive edition and the faces sets, the last two releases. The last two were pretty good quality.

And if we do, stop clinging to Kirk and Spock. They had six movies, three seasons, and 40 years of conventions a repeats.

Plus, TNG was much better than any Star Trek series, as were the movies, even at thier week points.

Never seen Terminator, but when I do, I don't think part three will be on my Netflix Q.

If you haven't seen them, do not ever see 3. Not only is is terrible, but it manages to also ruin the first two in the series and make them all suck. It is very rare for a film to manage to do that.

This is true today, but wasn't always true. Back in the late 80's to mid 90's, Lucasarts had some great games, like X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, and others.

Movie production updates for Terminator 4 And Star Trek XI

I doubt we will ever actually see a Peter Jackson Hobbit movie, even though I'd love for there to be one. But I'd like to be proven wrong.
As for continuous story arcs, these type of shows bug me because you have to watch them all, in order, and can't miss an episode. I tried to watch Lost, but never could watch it regularly every week, so I quickly got 'lost' and couldn't follow the story anymore.

TNG first aired 20 years ago? I didn't know that. I remember when it first came out. Now I feel old...

They are also getting too old IMO. The last episode of TNG made a point of showing that Data does not age, yet Brent Spiner continues to develop wrinkles, etc - although that's a moot point because they killed Data in Nemesis.

Not really. As if the movie weren't enough of a Khan ripoff already, they pulled a Spock/Bones with Data/B4. They could bring him back if they wanted to.

TOS cast members were making ST movies into their sixties, so I wouldn't mind another adventure with Picard and Co. They could probably work the same CG magic on Spiner that they did with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan in X3 for their younger days, although doing that throughout a whole film for one character might be prohibitively expensive.

Also, fuck Berman and what he's done to Gene Roddenberry's vision.

I agree with Jay here. They put the Data/B4 thing in as a loophole for bringing Data back, just as they did the Spock/McCoy mind-meld as a loophole if/when Leonard Nimoy agreed to come back for III. TNG cast isn't too old yet. Data is a special problem, but might be able to be dealt with, either from makeup/cg or maybe a plot device.
Besides the difficulty of getting the cast of TNG back for another film, I'm kinda worried that they seem to be out of new stories for them. Insurrection was terrible, and Nemesis was a rewrite of Wrath of Khan.

1977 70mm Soundtrack Strikes Back (Released)
Time
IIRC, The 1993 DE soundtrack has all new special effects sounds. The dialouge follows the 35mm/70mm mix. So it doesn't really sound that much different, unless you really listen hard to some of the effects, and even then they worked hard to makie it sound better, but not different. The only source for the different Aunt Beru voice, 3P0 tractor beam line, etc, is the mono mix. Some of the sound elements, such as the 3P0 tractor beam line, was added in for the special edition.
Someone who is more knowledgeable than I on this may correct me, but I think the 35mm and 70mm mixes on Star Was is effectively the same. Now the 70mm track for ESB is different than the 35mm track. The 70mm track is currently unavailable, I think.

I'm surprised that the retcon people at Lucasfilm haven't tried to somehow explain Hell or Falcon now that you mention it. But like Lord3vil said, none of these things really bother me - I can accept that the scriptwriters simply slipped up when they had Han say 'Hell' and Millenium Falcon sounds cool so whatever...but a Fifties diner on Coruscant?! Come On!! Where were the bad idea police when that one was conceieved?

Sayings are easly overlooked. I can forgive the lamest dialouge around, but entire scenes are harder. Plus, using too many 'alien' sayings can get confusing. You have to use them in a context were they are obvious what they mean. A movie could spend more time explaining the saying to the audience than its worth. So use a familiar earth saying, and move on. If Han Solo says "then I'll see you in hell" you know what he means. If the line was "then I'll resaturastas askaseas" You would have no idea what he meant.

But the 50's diner to me was just too much.

How George Lucas created the O-OT fanbase...

So far, the superior specifications of Blu-ray have not been realized. All Blu-ray titles to date are 25GB, while HD DVD titles can be 30GB. (I don't know if 30GB discs make up the majority of HD DVD releases, but I suspect they do.) All Blu-ray titles to date have used MPEG-2, while HD DVD uses VC-1. HD DVD supports Dolby and DTS lossless audio, while the only mandatory lossless codec for Blu-Ray is PCM (yes, uncompressed)! And the current HD DVD players are half the price of Blu-ray players.

Eventually, Blu-ray probably will adopt an advanced video codec, and may produce affordable 50GB discs. But for now, they are widely considered inferior to their cousins. In any case, the vast majority of people are looking at them today with the same wariness they cast towards DVD eight years ago. DVD Video's going away, or at least stepping down from the number one spot, there's top-down pressure for that. It's just a matter of when.

The problem is that Blu-Ray may not get the chance to produce the better discs, if HD-DVD wins in the meantime. Blu-Ray may be better, but they aren't taking advantage of it.
DVD is going to be around a good while longer, IMHO. As said before, there simply isn't enough reason for people to adopt a HD format. Besides a format war that has many people scared off, most people just don't have an HDTV, and therefore can't use a high def disc. Secondly, there isn't as much consumer reason to adopt high def formats. Laserdisc didn't replace VHS because to most people there wasn't a good reason to adopt a laserdisc. They were expensive, and had a better video and audio, but not that much better to compel people to buy them. So they remained in the realm of the audiophiles. DVD was a big leap forward. Complete with deleleted scenes, bonus features, alternate audio, commentary, much better sound, etc, people saw a huge difference and went to DVD. Now comes along high def DVDs. Most people don't have HDTVs, and aren't going to be getting them anytime soon. They aren't willing to buy another copy of their favorite film in less than 10 years, for not much difference. They already have extras, and the difference between HD and standard DVDs aren't enough in most people's minds to switch. They are simply satisfied with what they have and don't want anything new. "top-down" pressure isn't enough to force adoption.
An example of this is DVD-Audio. That was supposed to be much better than CD, and was supported enthusiasically by the music industry. But it failed miserably because nobody wanted it.

Star Trek gets better treatment than Star Wars...
Time
Star Trek has some advantages over Star Wars on the sfx changes issues:
1. No one person controls Star Trek since Gene Roddenberry died. Star Wars is at the mercy of George Lucas. This makes it harder for someone to decide to start 'improving' things.
2. Star Trek has many more shows, movies, etc, to earn them royalties on. Lucas has a large company and only a handful of movies to support it. In addition, Star Trek seemed to focus their creative talents on creating new shows, Star Wars only had the OOT for a long time.
3. Star Trek doesn't seem to suffer as much from "my original vision" ideas. You didn't have Gene Roddenberry doing things like adding stuff to fit the "way he originally invisioned them".

Of course, saying that Star Trek gets better treatment overall, didn't see Enterprise or most of the Star Trek stuff they put out since Gene Roddenberry died. Maybe thats why they are doing the changes. Most things they have done recently failed badly, so they are going back and revisiting their older stuff.

They will never admit they ever made a mistake. Its a "deliberate creative decision". But I'd be suprised if you see a green saber in the next remastering.
