I never really got into X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter. But X-Wing and TIE fighter was the best. I've beaten TIE fighter twice, but never could finish X-Wing, although I did get close. Lucasarts had some great games during this time. They had a couple of great combat flight sims during this period as well: Their Finest Hour:The Battle of Britian, and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. Then Lucasarts went into arcade-type games and things went downhill.

I'm not sure that this is the only time we will ever see the O-OT/OUT on DVD. Not counting a potential HD-DVD/blu-ray release, Lucasfilm hasn't exactly stuck by its past statements. Lucas swore at one point that Star Wars would never be released in any home video format because the only way to see it is in theatres. Then there is the famous "one last time" promotion for the 'Faces' release before the SEs came about. And I'm sure there have been others. Don't get too excited by a statement saying never again. It doesn't mean anything.

The uncut extended version of Superman IV. Supposedly there is a much longer cut that is better than the final, but the footage hasn't seen the light of day since one or two showings around the time the movie was released. I think I've heard that this version is lost and won't make it to the big Superman boxset due out in November, but I hope thats wrong.

I don't have TR47 release to compare these all against, but there is also a PCM track on the Moth3r PAL/Dr.M NTSC releases that is excellent. Don't know if it is a digital capture or not.

@Arnie - The DD track in addition to the PCM track is to solve the potential problems that a few players have with PCM. But it might be unneeded for most everyone. So, If one wants to get a bit different about it and not repetitious, one could make the DD track the actual theatrical sound mix, taken off the earliest laserdisc release.

I would love to have a disc with the 2.0 DD, uncompressed PCM, and a 1.0 DD-mono mix. Doesn't sound like all of this would fit onto a disc, but it would be great, neverless.

Actually what they did give us is substantially better than a laserdisc rip. I am sure you know they went to the laserdisc master for their O-OT transfer.

Personally I think this is the best the O-OT has looked on home video so far, not counting the 2004 SE version.

I did see one of the Phantom Edits, but I didn't think it was all that good. It was the one that didn't alter Jar-Jar's dialogue. For some reason they cut out some of the more important scenes, and left in some of the more annoying bits with Jar-Jar.

Personally I loved Jar-Jar, but I figured the first priority for making a fan edit like this was to get rid of as much Jar-Jar stuff as possible.

I don't think that was the Magnoliafan edit though.


It sounds like you saw the Phantom Edit, but it could be another one, I don't keep up with every edit out there. lol
The MagnoliaFan edit had Jar Jar and all gungans, and the neimodian's dialouge changed to alien language, then subtitled them differently to change dialouge. As a result, some plot points were changed or modified. The neimodians are a bit less wimpy, and there is given a reason why the gungans and the people of Naboo don't like each other, among other things. I thought it was a good edit, and even made Jar-Jar less annoying. It wasn't just a FF past Jar-Jar. I encourage you to check out the threads dealing with these two edits and to see the changes he made.

I know it was the laserdisc master, as I said in my post. But they could of done better than that. Lucas has never thrown anything away in his life. He has kept most every prop, costume, and model from all his films. He supposedly has the master tape of the Star Wars Holiday Special. So I don't buy that he got rid of all copies of the OOT. He 'somehow' found the original crawl to put with the OUT. (assuming it isn't a repro, which since no one has been able to show is, I'll say is original).

I don't know if I personally would call it hate, as much as frustration. I always thought that I would be happy once Lucas releases the OOT on DVD. He could redo as much as he wanted, as long as he gave us the OOT. I never thought that he would end up releasing such a cheaply done rip of the laserdisc masters, that isn't even anamorphic or anything. The man who brought us THX, and that was the best he could do? Oh, well. I guess it could be worse. We got something, and I didn't think that would even happen.
As for the prequels, yes, I don't think they are nearly as good as the OOT. ROTS was good, and I actually thought that Phantom Menace was ok, once I started ignoring Jar-Jar. Attack of the Clones was awful.
If you liked the prequels, check out some of the edits that have been done by the members around here. Magnoliafan did a great edit of the first two, as have some others.

Yes, I think that the studios should release entire series on DVD, not do this "test market" a season to see how it goes. I'm thinking that CBS won't get around to releasing the rest of the 60's western "Have Gun Will Travel" They have seasons 1-3, but made no announcements on 4-6. I really want this one to be finished, but not sure it will be. So they should finish Gargoyles, but it won't be the first time someone didn't finish a series. Sad but true.

I got a cheap $35 dollar DVD player as a backup player, and it is pretty good. It will even convert NTSC/PAL on the fly to what you set, and is region free. There are a few good DVD player review sites online, if you want to do a search for a specific model to see what it will do. S-video on a DVD player should be easy to come up with on a DVD player, and I think most, if not all, have it. The only problem with the cheap DVD players is that I've heard they have a tendency to quit after about a year. They use low-quality capacitors that burn out quicker than they should. Since I haven't had mine for a year yet, we'll see.

Its been a while since I've read this book, but, IIRC, it seems to imply as well that the emperor isn't really the villian, and definiately not a sith. He was explained that he is shut away from the people and the bureaucracy/military actually is the real power. Several things were changed from this point in the story.

According to label on the DVD box in the picture on the website linked (tf.n), the Target exclusive is 'exclusive concept art' I'm guessing that its postcard-sized prints of some Ralph McQuarrie art to me.

As for how they got their info, some are flyers, some are probably from employees. There has to be at least one employee at each of these stores who is a Star Wars fan and willing to post on tf.n or somewere like that what their store is doing.

I agree, interesting article.
As for how Batman cleared his name, I would think that most people would have the death attributed to the Penguin, especially after Batman aired the recording of him badmouthing everyone.
As for Shreck being the main villian, I still consider The Penguin to be the main villian. Sure, Shreck used the Penguin, but Shreck's using him eventually backfired on him and led to his ultimate demise. Plus, the Penguin was ultimately the biggest and most dangerous threat.

Was Shreck ever in the comics, or was he invented for the movie?

Usually when I think of mini-series, I think of "The Thorn Birds" or "Shogun" and the like that is basically one very long movie, divided out into parts to fit a TV show. Maybe something like you described would work better, but I still think that the incomplete nature of the Simarillion and the plodding story would make for some good episodes, and some episodes that would be almost impossible to watch. Unless one wanted to do some massive re-writing job. They did some changes for LOTR, but the Simarillion would need much more.
