The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)
Time

Since I don’t have a finished V1 for Star Wars Day, I decided to release another workprint (v105) which has all of the latest changes. It’s now in the folder with the rest, so if you have the link to any workprint you have them all.

The only changes still outstanding at this time are:

-The two Restructured changes foreshadowing Palpatine in TROS
-Tweaking the Starkiller firing shot from Finn and Rey’s POV
-Removing the casual Resistance officer from Leia’s mourning
-Adding brief Sith Eyes to Rey in her battle with Kylo

Also, keep in mind that everything past the Starkiller destruction will be reverted to Restructured for the Starlight Standard version, in order that this edit can be watched alongside the sequels with no continuity issues. The unfinished Luke vision is still in the workprint however, so just ignore that when giving feedback 😉 . The extended Starkiller Destruction and Luke Vision ending will be saved for another version of this edit to be released at some point in the future, which I’ve described in the first post of the thread.

I think that’s it. Happy 25th everyone!

I believe so. It is originally used in Ben and Han’s confrontation in TFA, which is why I used it here as sort of a leitmotif.

Semi-relatedly, I realized after creating the effect of Kylo watching the shield going down that it could serve as a bit of a metaphor for his emotional state at this point. It’s a bit of a reach, but it works for me 😉

There is color correction to every shot, but maybe not enough in some places.

Though you might want to avoid watching this edit when it’s done unless you are resigned to port more changes to Restructured 😉

I take this warning seriously.

Ha!

So with everything you’ve learnt with that deleted scene in removing timestamps do you think you will ever tackle the Finn and Phasma fight scene from TLJ?

I’m not nearly skilled enough to recreate that scene, unfortunately.

JEDIT: Happy Star Wars day everyone! Sorry I couldn’t get the entire project finished by today, but at least the biggest change is now complete. 😃

Yes, the more hints of Palpatine’s return the better I reckon. If you think there are more parts of the movie where a Palpatine hint could be dropped that would be cool. Eg When Kylo is communing with Vaders helmet. “I have been every voice inside your head”

FWIW, this is how I’ve tackled this in my sequel edit, though others may want something more insular to TFA itself for a standalone version: https://vimeo.com/549080534

It’s a neat concept, but yeah, I’d stick with something more subtle.

Whoa, nice work! I know I’m late in congratulating you but that’s really cool.

Thank you! Though you might want to avoid watching this edit when it’s done unless you are resigned to port more changes to Restructured 😉

Info: Fixing the TFA and TLJ Deleted Scenes
Time

Glad y’all like it 😄

For TFA the remaining scenes that could be used in edits would be:

-Finn and the Villager (Mostly done by others, but some shots are merely cropped)
-Jakku Message (Though not sure what else could be used in edits if they save the Leia Reveal)
-The first three shots of Unkar Plutt at Maz’s Castle (The rest has unfinished CGI of course)
-Tunnel Standoff (Though it’s a legitimately bad scene with no payoff and also has a larger timecode than the other scenes)
and
-Finn Will Be Fine

I showed the scene to my girlfriend who wasn’t clued-in beforehand, and it took three playthroughs before she figured out what was happening.

So I think we should definitely look at slowing it down a bit, though even if it was unchanged it would still be a dramatic improvement to the film.

Watching the scene again, I think it would work to simply duplicate the theater shots, and put one after the establishing shot of the children that shows Luke simply facing the AT-AT, then show the closeup of the children looking in rapt attention, then the existing shot of Luke deflecting the fire followed by the children laughing.

I appreciate you showing it to her! I always like to think of the hypothetical first-time viewer when making certain edits, so it’s great to get that perspective.

And that idea is sorta what I have been thinking. Maybe I could slightly scale the shot up so it looks slightly different (or scale up the fireball shot), but as far as the action goes, just have Luke and the AT-AT literally just standing there. At the very least, Luke could step forward a little or something. But the important thing is that the minimal-to-no action might help the audience register what the puppets are. Because in the fireball shot, your eyes just sort of follow the action of the puppets, rather than focusing on the puppets themselves. If that makes sense.

And I’ll also make it clearer that Rey is reacting to hearing “Skywalker”.

Yeah, keeping the wide shot on the introduction to the puppets and then zooming in on the fireball shot would be the logical way of doing it.
