TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)
Time

I made this mockup a few weeks ago and forgot to upload it until now:
https://vimeo.com/221051395
Password: leia

The intention was to find enough footage to cover the entire Starkiller cue without cuts, though I did have to slightly truncate the end since I wanted the original musical placement with the Hosnian shots. It’s more of a ‘what if’ than a serious suggestion.

However, I do really like the shot of Leia directly before the destruction of Hosnian Prime. In the original film, it is very obvious that Leia reacts to Han’s death through the Force, but here it is unclear whether she knows of his death at all. The development of her latent Force sensitivity is irrelevant to the film, and could even undercut the value of Luke to the story if Leia was strong enough to feel the death of a single person halfway across the galaxy. It may even be more tragic that she cannot sense his death, depriving her of even his final moment. This humanizes her and quickly reframes the sequence as being about her relationship to the system which is about to be destroyed. Leia is our only substantial character connection to the New Repubic (through her backstory and through Sella), just as she and Ben were the only substantial character connections to Alderaan. It is through them that we feel the loss of the planets, and so placing Leia directly ahead of the destruction and the death of Kor Sella, it allows the audience to ‘feel’ the destruction in a personal way.

In other news, has there been any progress on the overall edit? I assume this project needs the final versions of Maz’s Castle, the X-wing approach to the Starkiller shot, and the un-timecoded Leia scene to be provided by Sir Ridley, but is there anything other than that?

Star Wars 1977 Technicolor IB print color references (matched to print)

I really like the look of the conference room now, and reel 5 is looking nice. Some issues:

The scans still have a tendency to look a bit flat, so here are some updates:

There’s a lot of yellow in these images. The first three have a good amount of blue in the highlights to somewhat balance this out (and nice job on removing the greenish tint), but the second three are just too yellow. Note the blue of R2’s dome in image 2 versus images 4 and 5 - the blue is almost nonexistent. Of course, each batch comes from different reels, and this collector’s reel 3 has a consistent yellow push that doesn’t look at all natural. This is why I am wary of judging the color from a single Tech source - the factory had noted quality issues after all. Here’s how the Falcon shot looks with a blue curves adjustment:

I’ve been considering seeing Star Trek Beyond, as I’ve heard its more in the mold of classic Trek than ST ‘09 & STID. Now, I still haven’t seen the prior two movies and still don’t plan to. Can this movie be viewed as a standalone film, or is it too mired in the continuity of Abrams’ films?

Everything you need to know going into this one is established in Trek '09. IMO, if you can’t stomach watching that film, you shouldn’t bother with Beyond.

I actually don’t mind so long as it’s not Tatooine again for a very long time, and even then I’d want a damn good reason to go back. It was pointless enough having Luke go back there in RotJ other than Lucas checking off “the hero returns home” from his Joseph Campbell cheat sheet.

If it was Tatooine then people would complain that it’s reusing a familar location for nostalgia value, and if it was another desert planet people would complain that it’s just a Tatooine clone like Jakku. I believe in the internet’s ability to make this a problem.

The film strip scanning idea is interesting, and would help to determine how to color grade the film. I have this widescreen version and filmstrip somewhere. Perhaps if enough people had frames we could mail them to someone (Dr Dre, Poita, etc) for proper scanning and color calibration, and this would be better than relying on promotional images.

Politics 2: Electric Boogaloo

Going slightly athwart topic here, but I recently finished reading The Dictator’s Handbook after putting it down for months (this had less to do with the writing and more to do with the fact that I wanted time to digest the implications of said writing).

It’s a fascinating read and its cynical yet illuminating interpretation of government fits the current political climate like a glove. Highly recommended.

ALIEN: COVENANT

SSSSHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAA… where to start.

As is typical of the Scott brand, the mood and atmosphere and universe building were outstanding. Fassbender was terrific and the rest of the cast did the best that could have been done with what they were given.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

From the same crowd that gave us LOST, TOMORROWLAND…

Lesseee… We’ve got black-clad clean-shaven monkish Borgish tall dark-eyed statuesque time-jumping super-beings with Romanesque noses that are totally not the idealized image of the Jesuits, we’ve got another duality with a WASPy rapey-heterosexual insane “Davidic” would-be creator god and an Americany tool of the dimwit crew who tries to do the “right” thing according to programming, we’ve got the far-too-stupid to survive mostly white sloppy wildly-irresponsible dimwit crew with their moronic-and-evil-because-he-tries-to-be-Christian leader and their “asleep” cargo of presumably dimwit colonists unworthy of entrance into the great TOMORROWLAND…um…I mean TOMORROWWORLD…

The tall Not-Jesuits have created rapey impregnating aliens and bio-weapons for their INFERNO on Earth to help “cleanse” their planet of all they consider unworthy. It sure would be unfortunate if there was any blow-back onto the coadjutor families and lesser tools of the not-Jesuits, and they wouldn’t want any too-stupid-to-live useless-eaters surviving and learning it was they who did it. Luckily, The WASPy hetero-rapey Davidic would-be god intervenes and makes it very clear that he is solely responsible and anyone who blames the not-Jesuit group is TOTAL EVIL AND MUST SUFFER AND DDDIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!!! No, it is would-be David-god who is SOLEY responsible for bringing in and unleashing the hordes of rapey aliens and super-infectious pathogens.

Americany tool might have a change of heart after the thesis-antithesis wrestle at THE END and then merge their programming into the great synthesis.

END SPOILERS

It’s a good thing these are all just sychronicities sent through time by the great Jesuit-Borg OMEGA POINT to let us know the best possible path and it’s totally NOT a little gang of PURELY DEPRAVED SADISTIC AND INSANE PSYCHOPATHS using their control of Hollywood to advance their COSMICALLY CRUEL and BERZERKLY STUPID program.

You know, I’m sure Mark Hamill had his vision of what Episode VII was, and it wasn’t even close to what he probably wanted. The same goes for George Lucas, a totally different version than what we got on the screen. You ask anybody, and we all had different versions play out in our heads, that didn’t even come close to what we thought it would be like. You can’t make everyone happy, it’s impossible. I think Mark was just pointing this out to everyone, and it’s true what he said.

It’s not only that. I’d say that most people probably had multiple ideas of what a prequel/sequel trilogy would look like, and these contradictory and ever-evolving figments were sublime precisely because each one satisfied an aspect of the subconscious; no single vision could possibly coalesce these figments into a perfect story.

Meh, the quality of the impression wasn’t what made me cringe so much as his overall vibe. He seemed really unduly pleased with himself. Anyway, to address the difference between impressions and acting, can you imagine if Chris Pine had done a Shatner impression for his Kirk? That’s what Ingruber as Han would amount to.

This Han Solo exists in same timeline as OT and is not a reboot of the entire franchise.

So that means that a young version needs to be an imitation?

I’m with joe. No thanks.

No, it is a generally bad idea to recast this character period.

Whoops my bad. Yeah they should have got Ford to play him with the CGI that de-aged Leia so convincingly.

Or I guess they shouldn’t have made the movie at all because there’s no possibility whatsoever that anyone could ever make a good Han - Solo movie period.

Not even one in a million?

I’m pretty confident I know how this picture will be received.

Obviously it will be spurned by the artistic bourgeois of this forum for misinterpreting the hemispherical trench on the Starkiller Base as fully circumferential, at which point they will rush to interpretation and judgement, wholly failing to appreciate the confluence of elements which comprise the finished piece.
