Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

In the end, it didn’t matter that Luke was back. It made no difference who the characters were, the battles they fought, the victories they won. All that mattered were the Porgs. The Porgs saved Star Wars. The Porgs became Star Wars.

In 100 years, when children watch movies, they will be introduced to the movies that started it all, that gave birth to the Porg cinematic universe. Star Wars will live on.

So, thoughts and speculation on the trailer:

I wonder how much of the movie is really being shown here. It feels like even the Rey/Snoke scene could be as early as halfway through the film, if Luke declines to train her and Kylo arrives on the island.

We see nothing of Canto Bight.

Chewie looks, if possible, even stranger than in TFA. This is the one thing that really bugs me about the whole trailer. I’m all about them Porgs however.

There appears to be a big attack on a Republic stronghold, perhaps quite early on. If this is where Kylo decides that he can’t destroy Leia, he would fall out of favor with Snoke and Rey would replace him. I doubt very much that she would, of course, so my guess is she accepts him as her teacher. Side note, it’s irritating that they have an ‘upgraded’ medical frigate. It was annoying that it was a standard ship of the line in ROTJ, and it’s stupid that it’s remained so 30 years later.

This has the sort of action I expect of a climactic final installment of a trilogy, so it may not be too much to expect that the Republic destroys much of the First Order, or vice versa (though I doubt that). It would be refreshing to have the war somewhat settled going into the final chapter, to focus on the characters, but perhaps that’s too much to hope for.

I predict that Donald Trump will be out of office sometime next year.

How seriously are you predicting this?

Not too seriously. There’s an optimistic side of me that thinks America won’t seriously stand for his reckless behavior, but there’s also a pessimistic side that says that he has a real chance at re-election. I’m still about 60% optimistic in our country though, despite it all.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Extended and Enhanced by Doctor M (Released)

Just watched this. Very good work throughout. There was one place that was jarring to me, however. It was the cut from the deleted scene of Harry and Hermione discussing how Draco looked ill, straight to Slughorn’s fake memory. It comes out of nowhere, and maybe it was similar in the original version, but I had to rewind and watch it again just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.

But that’s really all that feels off.

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)

Here’s a mockup of the scene without Rey’s running away lines:
https://vimeo.com/237337603
Password: rey

I tried to do something different with the cuts and music before her lines, but Ridley’s version is better in that regard. I think the line omissions could work though.

One thing I thought of after uploading - The shot where Rey sees the attack force is worse than superfluous, now that we see the Finalizer. It also makes no tactical sense for Rey to go back to the castle since she has no hope of outrunning fighters that are already overhead, and indeed we see the results of her tactical error directly afterward.

Instead, she could look up into a deceptively clear sky, alerted by the sound of distant TIE fighters. This would also be a callback to the similar situation on Jakku - an organic form of character growth. The Apocalypse Now TIES would tie (sorry) into this idea, and it would make sense to seek shelter in the castle.

It’s funny, how many problems (and solutions) can cascade from a gentle restructure.

http://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-szechuan-mcnugget-sauce-backlash-2017-10

Three of us went to McDonalds on the day of the Szechuan sauce to partake, after being assured earlier in the day that there would, indeed, be Szechuan sauce. Imagine our outrage when there was, in fact, no Szechuan sauce. Imagine how we shrugged in seething fury and bought some nuggets anyway, and fumed with the fierceness of a thousand blazing suns while contenting ourselves with a themed sticker as an apology.

It was just a gimmick, people.

Sheesh.

It’s not a big deal either way - I love the edit regardless - but I had just realized why that scene never really worked for me. It’s one thing to want some space after a troubling revelation (and being a scavenger in a desolate wasteland, it makes sense to retreat to nature), but it’s quite another to abandon your current mission and call to adventure before thinking better of it less than a minute later. I understand the reasoning to reject the call, since Luke does the same thing in ANH, and if there were more time it would work better. But without the Starkiller firing to act as the ‘burning homestead’ moment for the audience, it may cause a bit of whiplash.

I think the reordering into a continuous action scene calls for more action and less indecision, but if it’s beyond the scope of this edit, I’ll put it down as another change in the Starlight Project 😉
