Zahn's Other SW Books (was: Survivor's Quest vs Outbound Flight)
Time

After abandoning the EU years ago, I recently decided to get back into it and read Outbound Flight.

I had already read the Thrawn trilogy, but that was it for Zahn. It was nice to get Thrawn’s origin story, and there were some really good ideas in the book, but other than that I was lukewarm on the whole thing. Zahn’s books seem like an excuse to set up intricate strategic battles which end more often than not with deus ex machinas in Thrawn’s favor. This is no exception, but it’s fun to see the clockwork battles and hear our military genius explain his brilliance at length.

One issue was the ending. There wasn’t one. I assume this ties directly into Survivor’s Quest, but it’s still a poor way to end a novel.

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)

My only quirks with it that I felt could use a couple changes…

Some of the dialogue is a little quiet with the new music additions. Specifically, I only found two places this was the case:

  1. When Han says, ā€œWhere’d you get that?ā€ in Maz’s castle when she hands out the lightsaber.
  2. In the new Snoke scene after Han’s death when he says, ā€œPrepare the weapon.ā€

Maybe just duck the music down slightly? Other than that, I think this seemed great.

I didn’t find these to be too quiet on my speakers, for what it’s worth (not much).
One place I noticed quiet audio was R2 finishing the search of the backup data. I couldn’t really hear it fade in during Chewie’s shot, and it was pretty quiet in the next one as well.

I’m still waiting on the files for the Leia scene, and I’d like to give the Starkiller shot another go before sending it out, but that shouldn’t take too long.

BTW, You might consider updating this thread title to indicate that Restructured V2 (or the Starkiller edit as I obstinately call it) has been released. šŸ˜‰

The updated version of the smoke cleanup is among my Mega links. SirRidley had also previewed a version of that shot on YouTube which looked even better than that (at least in low-res), I don’t know if that ever got rendered.

You regretted V1? As in the quality wasn’t all you had hoped for, or you had second thoughts on the concept?

I hope that there is a V3 at some point, if only to give it that extra shine that it could have had with only a week or two more work.

Another one that I think needs to be dealt with is the first R2 scene. You can’t hear 3PO walking away, so one moment he is there and the next moment he is gone.

Hal believed it was no longer valuable to include it, that the visuals were all we needed. šŸ˜‰

I also can’t remember if a sunset color grading was supposed to be added at all for the Battle of Takodana, or that was left off the table for this edit, but I didn’t really notice a difference from the theatrical.

The decision was made not to include it because it was one more step of encoding and slightly degraded the image quality.

Also, the deleted scene with Leia. It looks really good, but I felt the shots of her after she sits down look a bit too yellow. Her face just looks a tad more yellow than any of the other resistance shots of her though. Maybe it is just me.

Yeah, I was hoping to get another chance at color correcting this scene, it just didn’t happen in time for the release.

I don’t if what Ridley did to the slow mo shots during the Hosnian destruction was also done to that shot of Kylo Ren right before it cuts to Starkiller stuff, but if wasn’t I think it could be. It’s not bad, it kind of has a cool effect, but just wanted to see how others felt about it. If no one says anything then I wouldn’t worry about it.

There are a few slowed shots such as that one which didn’t get the treatment, I don’t think. Leia’s final reaction in that scene was slowed, a handful of shots in the destruction of the Starkiller sequence were slowed, etc.

Overall, I think everything looks fantastic. Job well done.

Thanks!

I just got this downloaded, and one thing I noticed was that the Starkiller smoke removal fix is a previous version. I don’t know if that was intentional, since there’s some slight image registration problems with the updated version, but I’m honestly relieved that my updated version didn’t make it in. Now I can fix that shot more better, or Sir Ridley can do it even more better.

Despite the things which have yet to be done, I’m very pleased with this release. I think that almost all of the goals of this edit have been achieved, and it only needs a few more simple things for perfection. 😃

Just finished downloading it … putting on flash drive to take home after work…

So excited!

Huh, my download says it will take 2-3 days. Something’s weird with that.
JEDIT: I think I solved it.
JEDIT2: Nope, it failed. Restarting, again says 2-3 days. The previous method relied on downloading it to the desktop app, which allowed for a fast speed but failed probably when it exceeded the maximum space allowed (15gb for a free account).

The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)

It may be enough to simply remove Leia’s lines about Snoke, even though it’s a cringey name no matter who says it, and that whole Maz’s Castle section has problems that won’t be solved simply with the ā€˜leaving’ change, so everything’s up in the air at this point.

I think we both know how a duel of the edits would end up - my edit would probably have more crazy ideas, and yours would be more professional. šŸ˜‰
