I've started to look at Ron Gilbert as almost George Lucas-esque these days. It's not like he was the only person involved (Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman were just as instrumental to the development as he was), and what few things he's done ever since haven't been that great (do you know anyone who's played Deathspank?). I'm starting to thing that he's just been holding the whole "What IS the real secret of Monkey Island? I'll NEVER TELL http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a283/IAMTHECHEESE1138/emot-smug.gif" thing over people's heads over the years just to make sure people still care.

Monkey Island 4 wasn't that great (seriously, FUCK Monkey Kombat), but the Tales series was awesome.

Had a sequel to Monkey Island 2 never been made due to Ron Gilbert's departure from LucasGames, no doubt we would still be hankering for Monkey Island 3. Fortunately/unfortunately that game was made, and it taught us a valuable lesson... sometimes things are best off left alone.

Monkey Island 3 was awesome. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a283/IAMTHECHEESE1138/emot-colbert.gif

What does annoy me, however, is that real physical swag is getting to be a rarity in both pre-orders and in collector's editions, and is rapidly being replaced by codes to unlock exclusive items. I for one kind of liked the cheap silly little crap they used to give away with pre-orders.

That's another awesome thing about being a PC gamer. If all they're doing with those pre-order items is unlocking some code, that means that that shit is already in there somewhere, and somebody already knows how to go into the console and unlock it. For instance, if you look on the Fallout 3 wiki, you'll see several weapons that say "Available through console only", like this one: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/O%27Grady%27s_Peacemaker

So I managed to find an NES, with all the cords, 2 controllers, and a copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 stowing away inside of it all for $20 last week. I had some problems with the blinking power light, so I replaced the 72 pin connector and it works like new now. First goal: beat Bionic Commando. Also Dr. Mario, Zelda 1 and 2 and Balloon Fight are in the mail.

It's gonna be a good week.

Add Just Cause 2 to that list.

Holy shit guys. Get Just Cause 2 right now. It's over-flowing with awesome.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to add this to the list earlier, but I did the pre-purchase deal for Monkey Island 2: SE several days ago (the deal is if you pre-purchase MI2:SE, you get SoMI:SE free. Now I feel redeemed for pirating it ages ago. :P )

And Another Thing...
Time

I'm in the process of reading it right now, but I'm not all that far yet. Although I am enjoying it, there is one thing that annoys me, and it's the CONSTANT references to the previous books, in an almost Family Guy-esque "Hey, you remember when we (insert event from first or second book here)?" and I just want to tell Colfer "You know we've read these books already, right? That's why we're reading this one in the first place!" Does he quit doing this later in the book?

But other than that, it's a quite enjoyable read.

EDIT: Arthur calling people "mate" kind of bothers me a little as well. He's far too stuffy for that.
