Anyone else miss grit in movies and TV shows?
Time

I agree, it's not that every or even most entertainment should be dirty, gritty, dark, etc, but that there is a tendency to avoid imperfection. Where is the break-down happening? Are modern tastes simply oriented to superficially perfect fluff?

Perhaps on a related matter, the NYT had an article about the decline of quotable lines from movies. I'm not sure this is true and meaningful or not.

Is the Hobbit prequel trilogy suffering the same problems as the Star Wars prequel Trilogy?
Time

I've finally seen the last Hobbit movie today. In watching the first movie, I couldn't help think of the prequels. The feeling of disappointment was familiar. The second continued the trend. The two trilogies don't share all the same problems, but it was so disappointing to see some of the prequel's defects pop up here: the sudden heavier reliance on CGI, the stilted romance, heavy-handed silliness, the way some concepts felt like poor copies meant to echo (or "rhyme") what we saw in LOTR. I thought the third was the best of them, though even that makes me cringe in recalling how ROTS was favored for its heavy action...which maybe does paper over many failings. I think the biggest similarity is in how far the movies fall below the expectations of many fans of the original trilogies. The best thing, as others have said, is how much material there is to work with now for edits.

Estamos muy sarcástico y juguetón aquí. Este tipo de cosas se pierden fácilmente en la traducción. Sólo puedo decir que me gusta tu idea, pero no creo que sea la verdad de la película.

We are very sarcastic and playful here. Such things are easily lost in translation. I can only say that I like your idea but I don't think it to be the truth of the movie.

I was watching some Sister Wendy recently. She pontificates (heh) on the meaning of art. She may be wrong or right but it's always interesting. She says that others may see different things in the art. Unintended meanings are a real possibility in art. I take your argument seriously, but the facts just aren't there, nor the art. It would be fun to pursue in an Edit in this vein, but everything you present is extremely circumstantial. The flaws in the PT invites all manner of speculation.

When did you realize the Prequels sucked?

In my opinion, the prequels did not suck.  I enjoyed them as much as the OT and my favorite of the 6 is ROTS, but I love them all.  However, a number of people did not enjoy the PT for various reasons, so I accept that they are not for everybody.

That's pretty much exactly what I thought until I was about 12. :P

 Happy belated birthday.

Stop trying to give prequel characters interesting motivations ;)

At least that would have been a role more worthy of Jackson. Windu as a secret disciple, sort of a Saruman character could have been very good.

There are no secret clues, I'm afraid. Watch the ~0:58 mark of this video of the ROTS duel with Dooku. While Obi Wan is engaged with Dooku, Anakin is directly behind Dooku and lowers his lightsaber and just stops fighting. The same poor choreography is at work in Palpatine's killing of the Jedi with Windu.

Fan Edits exist for implementing alternate visions, maybe yours is worth exploring by someone with the skill.

Last movie seen

Had an evening at the charming AFI theater and I recommend both movies:

Birdman - Michael Keating looks like he's having fun. Not a very grounded movie which makes it feel light for a movie that seems like it is trying to be deep. I like that. I'm not wild about the ending, which isn't bad but didn't really do anything.

The Imitation Game - Engaging as DominicCobb says. Keira Knightley doesn't serve much of a purpose which is only aggravated by how absent she is from the movie. I'd rather watch Cumberbatch anyway... [awkward segue]... The spotlight is swiveled to political messaging a bit heavy-handedly in a way that detracts from the focus of the movie, particularly at the end in a postscript, but I don't think many viewers will notice or care. Some creative liberties are easily forgiven, like the name of his machine which serves to highlight his personal struggle.
