I would agree that we're better off not making Hitler comparisons (despite what I consider to be a fascist approach by Mr Lucas) or that the fanbase has been "raped".
What seems to be getting the most attention is Lucas's speech to Congress in the 80s, and the alleged comment made to a fan that went something like "Move on with your life...they're my movies, not yours." I think Mr Lucas and Lucasfilm in general is having a bit of a PR problem these days. And considering that he's got six movies that he intends to release theatrically (AGAIN) in 3D, it would be in his best interest to make nice. Ergo, release the OOT for those who want it.
That doesn't mean he will.
