Star Wars Article for redbaron (and for discussion)
Time
I was scouring the web and found these

Alan Arnold " Tell me more about the overall concept of the Star Wars saga"

George Lucas "There are essentialy nine films in a series of three trilogies, The first trilogy is about a young Ben Kenobi and the early life of Lukes father when Luke was a little boy, This Trilogy takes place twenty years before the second trilogy which includes Star Wars and Empire, About a year or two passes between each story of the Trilogy and about twenty-five years between the trilogies, The entire saga spans about fifty five years"

AA How much is written?

GL I have story treatments on all nine, I also have voluminous notes, histories and other material Ive devloped for other purposes, Some of it will be used, some not. Originally when I wrote Star Wars, it devloped into an epic on the scale of War and Peace, so big I couldnt possibly make it into another movie, So I cut it in half but it was still to big, so I cut each half into three parts, I then had material for six movies, After the success of Star Wars I added a trilogy and stopped there, primirily because reality took over. After all it takes three years to prepare and make a Star Wars picture, How many years are left? So I am left with three trilogies of nine films, At two hours each, thats about eighteen hours of film"

Bantha Tracks 1980

BT At one point there were gonna be twelve Star Wars films?

GL I cut the number down to nine because the other three were tangential to the saga, Star Wars was the fourth story in the saga and was to have been called Star Wars "Episode IV A New Hope". But I decided people wouldnt understand the numbering system so we dropped it, For "Empire" though we are putting back the number and will call it Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. After the third film of the trilogy we'll go back and make the first trilogy, which deals with the young Ben Kenobi and the young Darth Vader

BT What will the third trilogy be about?

GL It deals with the character that survives Star Wars III and his adventures

Time Magazine

In the sequels Luke will be 60 year old Jedi Knight The sequels focus mainly on Luke and Mark Hammill will get first crack at the role if hes old enough If the first trilogy is social and political and talks about how society evolves, the middle trilogy is more about personal growth and self-realization and the third deal with morals and philosophicals problems The sequals are about Jedi Knighthood, justice, confrontation and passing on what you have learned

Return of the Jedi - was it what it was meant to be?

Why is there such a dislike towards Jedi? I liked it and thought it was a good film.

It is a good film, but the weakest of the Classics I feel, which are great films, I think maybe the antics at Jabba palace and the Ewok village take away some of the greatness, as the rest is very good and better than most of P.T,

I think George had enough of Star Wars by then and wanted to wrap the Saga up and maybe squeezed to much in and it took some of the greatness away who knows?

That's weird. It's illegal to sell movies before their official street date. Not that people really crack down on that much, but still. Unless they changed the rules since I worked at Circuit City.

Yeah I was surprised when it arrived, I ordered it from U.K DVD on-line supplier, i think the DVD was semmingly originally shipped from Canada as it has a French dual language cover.

I got the DVD today (from an online retailer pre-ordered ages ago)

The deleted scenes are very good especially the Rebellion scenes and the Shakk Ti , Grevious scene and the aftermath, didnt think the Yoda, Dagobah scenes were all that special

Watched the movie and the rest of the extras including some documentry called "The Chosen One", and may have a listen to the Lucas and team commentary tommorow

Can you imagine Han fighting Luke, that is what the duel in ROTS should have felt like.

I have to agree about Lucas having to put the most effort and commitment into Star Wars Empire and Sith for the reasons said. though he would know he could put out any half-assed attempt and it would make money because its Star Wars, and people will want to see it.

Yeah there such moments in Sith and the prequels in general unlike the Classics(maybe my bias where everything to me is o.k even the Ewoks and Jabba stuff(only would come near), sure the Classics dialouge and acting wasnt shakespeare but it beats the hell out of prequel dialouge and acting) The balcony was a prime example(though topped by the Clones love dialouge) my other cringing moments in Sith the usually good and reliable Ian Mcdiarmid going "No No you must die " or whatever and the generally awful(in the film) Natalie Portman on Mustafar "your breaking my heart" "and "hold me like you did by the Lake on Naboo when there was nothing but our love etc" though I can live with crap acting and dialouge they were cringeworthy, other than that I really do like the film

But (the sad thing?) it could have been very easily avoided I feel, as said(many times) had George collebrated properly with others decided to stick (exactly) to the outline of story presented in the C.T, cut out the overlong FX sequences and cut the Jar Jar and 3-PO type crap(all of which could have been done and all could have been avoided), they may have well have been up there with(or heaven forbid surpassed) the originals(but no chance in hell with all those things) and may not had so many critics both from fans and the media reviews

I have seen the Holiday Special!
Time
In my opinion both are crap its which is the lesser of two evils,in the Holiday Special at least you have Han,Luke Leia and Chewie etc, I lasted about the whole duration,ut some of it does make you wish you were watching the great Jar Jar Binks himself and all of the fart and poop jokes that go with him, but I would have go for Menace anyday at least it has a little more relevance to the Classics and has more redeeming features.

Things that Scared You as a Kid
Time
I sneakily watched as a young child The Omen and it totally scared the hell out of me, for a start the Jerry Goldsmith music the deaths in the film especally when David Warner got decapitated and the Billie Whitelaw nanny really scared me,as did the overall (Satanic) theme of the movie,I remember some nights for a couple weeks in bed being afraid of being in the dark and having the door closed and just being generally freaked out.. I did not watch it again until my late teens...

Will GL start a trend of other classic films being changed?

I dont think it will stop. its a moneyspinner to make extra cash off the Fans

Part of the issue(maybe), is not really changes to a movie be it on a Directors Cut or Special Edition. it is the Original Cut being available on a decent format, along side the Directors/Special Edition cut of a movie , so the FAN has the CHOICE of which version/or both they want to view and the Original Cut not being consigned to annals of film history never to be viewed a decent format again.

If the Original Cuts were available a lot of fans of these movies, may well be happy for as many Directors Cuts and Special Editions as possible, because as long as you have the Original Cut, you dont have to buy or watch these Directors Cuts or the Special Editions..(you may like both cuts, who knows????)

If George had only changed Special effects for the SE and DVD, would people have complained as much?
Time
I dont see the problem with Directors Cut and Special Editions as long as the original movie is available on decent format which sadly is become less common, I just do not see why(this isnt just applying just the O.O.T ) the FANS cant be allowed to have the choice on the same disc especially with the format available and the formats available in the future, It seems rather selfish and disregarding a sizeable amount of FANS wishes(who in the end are most important people who the films success was dependent on) by the Director and the Companies distributing it (I am not just applying this to George)

Its like the Marvel ones which are cool and I collecting them as well, but the Star Wars ones from DeAgostini, and available to subscribe from Deagostini.co.uk. the magazine is like a mini encyclopedia of Star Wars and you get free stuff like posters a t-shirt, binder and figurine stand, plus there is extra stuff to buy like addtional binders etc,

I have to be honest just complete my own personal little SW collection,

I will also be honest it was the only reason I bought things like The Holiday Special The Clone Wars Vol 1(I had no real interest it because it was Animation but brought it because it was SW and hated it) and the Ewok Adventures(found very cheap),
though the how good the TV series is will probably depend on how much I pay if it is good I will pay the full price, but if its crap I will be in no hurry and prepared to wait for a suitable cheap price

No, i wont need another version of Sith, I probably am gonna get Clone Wars vol 2 for the collection(I hated the first but get it for the collection) I dont really buy much else, never bought an E.U book ever, and I am not gonna renew my Hyperspace subscription(now Sith has been completed) the only thing I can think of SW im gonna buy is the miniture figure and magazine collection here in the U.K and the Star Wars poster book at the moment.and I will buy the T.V series DVDs in the very distant future,

It doesnt matter to George if all of us here on O.T.com didnt buy Sith or any S.W product ever again

but my own little protest does extend to not buying any future version of the Classic Trilogy other than O.O.T including the proposed six film box-set, not that George is worried, but least I will have the Classic Trilogy in my collection the way I want to see it and not in a version I will not like and believe was not necessary, and I will have cash for other things, but that protest does not extend to Revenge of the Sith.....

impossible, this could not have happened no matter how hard gorge tried, why because we knew it was coming. i think it would have be soooooooo much better if lucas had kept everything about the PT quite from the begining. so that no one knew about the clone wars, or the anakin obiwan battle, or any of that. so much fo the PT was ruined by the fact that people already knew so many key plot points, think for a second how good the PT would have been if boom outta nowhere the clone wars started in AOTCs, no one would ahve known about it and everyone would been like holy shit a galactic waar OMG. or when anakin started fighting Obiwan, if the fact that obiwan had beat anakin but a volcano and left him for dead wasnt know think about how that scene would have been. that right there is lucas's big mistake. if the PT was 100% peoples imagination and stuff they got from the OT the PT would have been so much better. cause you would have had "I AM YOUR FATHER" surprises in there.

Text

I definitely agree with your post, the biggest achilles heel of the prequels is that we knew the story. While your watching TPM, you knew that ObiWan, Padme, little Anakin, Palpatine, and Yoda were in no real sense of danger, because we knew, except for Padme's fate, they would be in Episode IV.

The biggest challenge Lucas faced was our imagination. We all had an idea of how Anakin turns to Darth Vader, how the duel would be, how they would wisk Luke & Leia away to their foster parents, how the Jedi would be taken out one by one, and how Yoda and Kenobi would go into hiding. That is pretty much the main facts of the prequels, where are the suprises?

Sure, the PT could have been better, with Lucas letting go from TOTAL control of the PT, and more like he did in the OT. Sure the kiddiness factor could have been toned down in the TPM, and well I won't defend Jar Jar, that was just a mistake.

I think the real reason the PT would never be as good was the characters. No matter if Lucas did things many different ways than the way he filmed these movies, Luke, Leia, and Han Solo are just lovable characters that cannot be matched. They had PERFECT chemistry, and that was like lightning in a bottle. The PT was about ObiWan, Padme, and Anakin, even if they were cast to perfection I still don't think we would have loved them as much as the OT big 3.

I have to agree but it doesnt excuse the crap like Jar Jar Caotain Tarpals and two headed pod race announcers etc and pointless plot points like Qui-Gonn finding Anakin, Anakin building 3p0 etc (which leave possible inconsistencies and things up to the viewers interpretation) etc, I was happy to give Lucas full liscene to bring the backstory to life without my imagination clouding the issue, To me some parts the things I imagined were exceeded and pleasently suprised by Lucas' interpretation of things, but others I felt dissapointed by his interpretaion of things which could have been done better, and the overall exection of the P.T story(though I like the basic story) he had put in front of us was not realised to its full potential, and which I will always feel was damaged by the crappier elements of TPM and it flowed over in to the next two movies, I will always contend to the end that Lucas should have got a decent collebrating team(eg Empire Strikes Back) to work with him, instead of basically having doing everything which would seen less critism of the dialouge etc and then maybe/maybe not we would have had the chemistry(I doubt it personally myself) of the big 3 in the O.T and would made certain things more convincing, and maybe the crappier elements of the P.T would have been discarded,
