The UsoVision Edition [was DC Lazor DOES HAVE ... Attempting a new rip]
Time

As one of the few still interested in LD captures, I would have liked to have seen more info in this thread. Anyway, I found this .txt file included with the release:

STAR WARS USOVISION
===================

  Movie: STAR WARS (imdb: tt0076759)
  Release: 1977/05/25
           1981/04/10 (with this rollup)
           1993/09/15 (with this audio mix)
  "Written and directed by George Lucas. Produced by Gary Kurtz"

  This is the edition of 1993, from the Definitive Collection.
  It differs very little from the 2006 bonus disc
    (same master except for the rollup)
  But the audio is ripped at a higher bitrate (256 vs 192)
  The video was ripped higher prior to downcode, and made anamorphic.
  The laserdisc rip was lightly cleaned (IVTC/temporal denoiser only).

  Hardware: Pioneer CLD-M301 laserdisc player
            normal quality audio cables
            gold-tip braided video cable
            Funai SV2000 WV10D6 DVD recorder
  Software: MPlayer SVN
            Avidemux 2.3
            TMPGENC DVD Author 1.6
  Format: VIDEO_TS folder
          MPEG-2 720x480x23.976 ANAMORPHIC Aspect Ratio 2.35 with Letterbox
                 ABR approx. 4500 kbps, 2-pass encode with Avidemux
                 (mpeg2enc codec)
          AC3 256 kbps stereo, hardware encoded

  There are no menus, softsubs or alternate audio tracks.
  This is a BAREBONES release.
  This is NOT the XP77.

Will have a closer look later , but contrast seems to be set a little too high (as shown by the loss of highlights in white areas of shot 6).

Thanks for those who have commented on this project some of your words are in this clip:

The flash media player doesn't work for me. However, I did find it was possible to extract the URL and download the MP4 file directly.

And yes, I think this introduction does just make things more confusing...

It didn't help that the voice over is pretty much unintelligible. Computer-generated speech is great if you're Stephen Hawking, but if you have a voice of your own why not use it? (Don't be embarrassed - everyone thinks their voice "sounds funny" on a recording. Or if it's an anonymity issue, just apply some filtering, or even just shorten everything to a convenient length for text subtitles.)

GOUT image stabilization - Released

@starwarsfan8376:

Presumably, you previewed and checked the script's output before spending several days on the encode? You'd be mad not to...

Was the M2V file output by your encoder free from errors?

If so, the playback problems are probably caused somewhere in the muxing/authoring or burning (and have nothing to do with the script, BTW). You have given plenty of information about the problems you experience when playing, but no information about the process you went through to actually create the disc. We need this in order to be able to give any meaningful help.

Info: 2006 GOUT DVD using 'Faces' PCM Sound?

Now that I have the video side of things done I'd love to be able to combine it with the Faces audio. Has anyone written up a tutorial on that?

The same process applies for any PCM audio. Bear in mind that stereo PCM uses a very high bitrate, so your MPEG-2 stream must be encoded very conservatively with respect to maximum bitrate, otherwise the muxing will fail.

I checked the CCE sample in DGIndex and VirtualDubMod.

It does appear that VDM upsamples the chroma incorrectly (I saw the same artefacts as on your screenshots above). Not only were the DGIndex screenshots fine with respect to the upsampling, they also showed slightly different colours!

To summarise: do not use VirtualDubMod for screenshots, it's outdated and buggy.

Info Wanted: What is the best preservation that mimics the full Definitive Collection?
Time

I think the most accurate representation would be the Dr Gonzo set - although the video has been made anamorphic and is a little soft, the commentaries are included. The 4th disc in the set I believe contains the laserdisc supplemental material.

The most accurate representation of the video would be the "bonus discs" for the 2006 official DVD release (aka the GOUT) - these non-anamorphic DVDs are from the same video masters as the DC.

Best way to transfer SW VHS to DVD or Computer

I have a good quality 1997 Widescreen Trilogy set that I would like to have on DVD or my computer to watch. When I tried to use a VCR and DVD recorder it wouldn't work due to copy protection. Soemone told me that this was macrovision. Is there any good way to transfer and get around this protection?

Yes - you need to buy a Macrovision removal device (aka a video stabilizer) to connect up between your VCR and DVD recorder.

I've imported them into final cut pro using log and capture footage as one would with a regular dv camera, but just wondered if anyone knew a better way.

What do you mean by "better"?

Well  in VDM, I scanned thru and picked all B frames for each of the screens.

Good.

It was just importing the stream in, it was already created when I put it into VDM to take the screens, so no chroma upsampling should be happening.

The MPEG-2 stream stores video as YV12 (4:2:0), so chroma should be upsampled for display. It looks to me like VDM is upsampling assuming the frame is interlaced rather than progressive - I don't know whether this is due to a fault in the decoder or that your encodes weren't flagged as 'progressive'.

More on this here.

... for some reason it seems like TMPG just disregarded my HD color correction. I just used colormatrix.dll with these scripts in avisynth

ColorMatrix(mode="Rec.709->Rec.601")

ConvertToYUY2()

Hmmm... doesn't TMPGEnc need RGB input? Have you tried the script with ConvertToRGB32() instead?

Hi everyone!  I'm interested in using this script; is there anyone who's smarter than me who can teach me how to use AviSynth, specifically with this script?  I found a tutorial, but it's still gibber-jabber.  Thank you!

PS- if there's a tutorial somewhere in this thread, please forgive me.  Twenty pages is a lot ot sift through.

There isn't much to choose between Procoder and CCE. There is perhaps marginally more detail in the CCE encode (zooming in on the trees in the background of shot 3) but this may well be due to a difference in 'I' frame placement; individual screenshots are not an ideal way to rank encoders.

Also, I think I'm seeing some chroma upsampling error in the Rad logo, and the rightmost red flag in shot 3. This may be something to do with using VirtualDubMod for taking your screenshots - could you try DGIndex instead?

A theory about the coloring on the 04 DVDs.

doubleofive said:

I don't remember where it was mentioned, but there's an article the specifically states that ILM did the colors and just had Lowry clean it.  I think ILM tried to restore it themselves to save money, messed up the colors and hoped Lowry could fix it.

http://www.apple.com/ca/pro/film/lowry/starwars/index.html

That article mentions that Lucasfilm scanned the negatives, carried out the "re-mastering" (I assume this means the '04 alterations) and the re-colour timing. Then then attempted a cleaning pass through ILM, before deciding to give the job to Lowry.

Lowry received high-definition scans to work with from Lucasfilm. Although it is not clear in the article, it's reasonable to assume that the scans provided contained the tweaks and the new colours.
