Fun with Photoshop - Denoising an LD capture
Time
Zion said:

This wouldn't really work for moving shots. Well, unless you figured out a way to take a high number of separate captures of the same LD and blend each frame together.

Well, with a CAV disc you can use the slow-motion feature of your LD player, while still capturing at full speed, then temporalsoften(xx,255,255).selectevery(yy,1)

Oh and hi, BTW.

A Channel 4 spokesperson confirmed there are no plans for another 'Bring Back' episode but added they wouldn't completely rule out doing another of the "special event shows".

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

@ HotRod & ladyferry:

You little buggers. :-)
Fancy hiding your rule-breaking in Ady's thread...

OK, to be clear: so Fanboys was not released in the UK. However, you can still legally get it imported (and breaking the region coding is fair use, as far as I'm concerned).

Of course, anyone with half a brain can also get it illegally. This is known as warez, and we do not discuss that on here.

I say the railing should be even higher.

Tell that to my workplace too it has railings that aren't even that high. How high are typical railings anyway? I am guessing they are usually not as high as you think they are.

Typically:
Minimum height 1m (about 3'-3"), or 1.4m (4'-7") if the walkway is used by cyclists.
1.5m (4'-11") if over a railway.
1.8m (5'-11") for equestrian usage, or over a railway where there is a higher risk of vandals throwing stuff onto the tracks or overhead lines.

HD Xvid to DVD?
Time

What is the actual resolution of the Xvid? Most DVD players that can play MPEG4 ASP are limited to a max res of 720 x 576.

Assuming 'HD' actually means HD (720/1080p) and not 'HR' (which just means a resolution a bit higher than the normal 640 x 352), your best option is to hook your computer up to your HDTV and play it from there.

Other options are to convert to DVD - which means downscaling to SD of course - or converting to a BD5/AVCHD disc for playback on a BD player or PS3.

Do you guys recommend this? Cliprex DVD Player Professional

Never heard of it. On investigation, it looks like it's bundled with spyware.

Media Player Classic along with VLC should play and do everything you need

I don't trust codec packs. But I would recommend Media Player Classic - Homecinema edition as a media player.

If you could interview George Lucas, what would you say?

The gout is an absolute joke.  i know it looks sharper than the laserdisc but it also looks worse because of the sharpening and sounds worse because of the low bitrate 2.0 dolby which could easily pass muster as a bad mp3 rip.

I put on the laserdisc just last night and was astounded by the sonic difference in the audio.  The Stereoization is more defined there is more depth to the sound and the lows are lows and the highs are highs.  The Soundtrack is loud in all the right places and quiet when it needs to let Williams music soar on through.

If you turn dynamic range compression off in your Dolby Digital decoder then you might notice an improvement in the AC3 on the GOUT.

The UsoVision Edition [was DC Lazor DOES HAVE ... Attempting a new rip]
Time

Firstly, with the IVTC - although it seems to have been successful for the most part, I noticed some flickering artefacts on the near-horizontal lines behind Han in the cantina. I'm guessing that the IVTC includes an element of post-processing that is incorrectly identifying these lines on certain frames as combing artefacts, and blurring them.

Secondly, the "light temporal cleaner" is probably a bit too strong, especially since the image already suffers from the DVNR-from-hell that was part of the THX laserdisc mastering process. The pan across the cantina is even more of a blurry mess than it was before.

And if you could back off the contrast a little, if possible, that would avoid the loss of detail I pointed out in Post 8 above.

EDIT: I have uploaded a 50 MB VOB containing a quickie test encode of the Greedo scene, IVTC'd, anamorphic'd, with a light temporal cleaner and brightness/contrast adjustment based on the brightness of the subtitles. I don't know if it's better than the GOUT, which is what I hope for, but eh. I'm mainly doing this for myself, but I like to share.

I checked out the sample. Is it worth me making any suggestions for improvement, seeing as you've already uploaded a torrent?
