Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)
Time

The Rifftrax version is definitely too bright - the black in the starfield/space scenes is a dark grey, while on the KCCI version it is pure black.

I suspect that the KCCI version has had some noise reduction filtering applied, the image seems a little soft as a result. Anyone know it's history? Did Rikter actually have access to the original analogue tape? (Come to think of it, the disc I have is not even Rikter's, someone else re-authored it with different chapter stops.)

One other thing I'd just like to note - if anyone has "obtained" the Rifftrax HS DVD who didn't purchase the original audio, please "do the right thing".

Does no one else care about this as much?

Obviously not, but I for one can't resist investigating this kind of thing...

With more comparison, I was wrong, the KCCI does seem to have the edge on quality. I remember it looking flawless on my 480 set, but dvd compression is more apparent on HDTVs. It also suffers from being a bit too dark, ...

Yep, I've taken a look and agree with you. The version featuring the rifftrax commentary looks to be have quite a good level of detail, but has some pretty bad compression artefacting. It has also been deinterlaced - but has some dupe frames, almost as if it has been converted to NTSC-film 23.976fps and back again. The Angrysun KCCI version is in the original interlaced 29.97fps video format, so motion is much smoother, and compression quality is much better, although it is possibly a little too dark.

Star Wars: Renascent *** NOW AVAILABLE!!! ***

The render is complete for the DVD. Everything rendered properly and when things move fast, edges become kind of jaggidy. The WMV will be at the normal fps though.

What exactly do you mean by "jaggedy"? I suggest you post a screenshot or a short video sample, then maybe you could get help to fix it.

The encoding/rendering side of things is very important. If you put out a technically flawed release, then that will likely overshadow any artistic merit the project might have.

Take your time and get it right.

What exactly is the difference between the Revisited and Purist DVD9, I mean, which custom scenes have been excised from the Purist Edition? And is the Purist Edition also colour-corrected and have the FX been updated (lightsabers, Millenium Falcon's engines, etc...)?

Also, is there a DVD9 PAL Purist Edition? I can't find one anywhere :(

Check the Fan Project Wiki; all this info is there. Links (from the Project Index sticky at the top of this forum): Xvid, PAL, NTSC, PAL (DL), NTSC (DL)Purist

... how about the 70mm 6 track? Has that thing ever been captured digitally and uploaded here?

No, but the '93 mix is mostly based on the 70mm 6-track. A comparison is discussed here.

... it'd be great if the 5.1 soundtrack was uploaded somewhere for me to listen to :)

Go and look here.

STAR WARS: the alt.binaries.starwars thread
Time

Bumping this old thread for two reasons:

1. For anyone interested, it looks like some generous soul has reposted Jambe Davdar's Building Empire (original PAL, NTSC and the Miami PAL version). Higly recommended for anyone who hasn't seen it. More info here and here.

2. Recently there has been a general increase in Usenet posting abuse (password-protected RARs, spam, etc). Although this hasn't greatly affected the low traffic groups like a.b.starwars, I have seen reports of porn being posted to the group with misleading post titles (ie claiming to be a WookieGroomer release). If you spot anything like this, you can use this thread to warn other users.

The site I have been pointed to contains 5 links for DVD, 2 of those are PAL. Both PAL-links have the same link to a single-layer-DVD, called PAL_SL_DVD despite the fact that one should be PAL_DL_DVD for double layer.

Assume the site you are talking about is fanedit.info (it's OK, you can mention it) then check their FAQ:

what do I do if a link is not working or somethign (sic) else is wrong?
write a REPORT about it .

Out of interest, why are you so eager to get the PAL version? The NTSC disc has the same content and should work on the majority of PAL players.

HELP NEEDED!!! Rendering an MPEG for DVD Architect using SONY VEGAS
Time

Asteroid-Man said:

If I'm working at 23.976fps, should I convert that to 29fps using the DVD Architect MPEG-II template to just avoid pull-down all together for the final render?

Video has to be 29.97fps to comply with the DVD-video spec.

Converting 23.976 to 29.97 is not recommended, using pulldown instead is much more efficient.
