Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)

Okay, I think I figured out what the problem was.  My AC3 encoder has adjustable settings for dealing with the high frequency cutoff point, and I seem to have inadvertently done this wrongly.  The AC3 format's lossy compression throws away the most detail in the highs, I believe, and the range is dependent on the bitrate used, so that's probably why it was so noticeable in the 448 but the 640 came through mostly unscathed.

Which encoder are you using - Aften, or professional Dolby-certified software?

IIRC, the pro encoders I've used in the past (Surcode and Sonic Foundry/Sony) have just a low pass filter that can be turned on or off, the purpose being to roll off high-frequency content that could cause artefacts in the encode. It is recommended by Dolby to turn this filter on.

I think that the audio bandwidth is adjusted automatically by the encoder; at low bitrates the bandwidth is decreased in order to maintain high audio quality. However, I wouldn't have thought that 448kbps (for a 5.1 mix) would be problematic, and certainly not 640kbps.

Ebay drives me nuts sometimes...

And never mind. I contacted them anyway. Why they only have half of the discs they're selling available to U.S. buyers is beyond me.  It's mostly NTSC stuff.

I seem to recall someone saying that fees are less if you only list on the local site.

So, what are your Ebay pet peeves? One of mine is "local pickup only" for items that wouldn't be hard to ship...

The fact that on the UK site, there are two categories for "laserdisc". (One of them should actually be Laserdisc Players, but has never been corrected.)

Heads up for those using SABnzbd to download from Usenet: it has an option, enabled by default, to protect you from wasting bandwidth downloading encrypted (password-protected) RARs.

I found that my download had been paused after the first RAR because it had detected that encryption is present.

In this case however, the password is given in the NFO so it's all good.

Idea & Info: A Preservation Wiki?
Time

I think a wiki "knowledge base" is a good idea.

Jay was at one time planning to extend the fan project wiki to include articles on the various sources (so, for example, we could list the various nuances for each SW laserdisc release). This was never implemented, and interest in developing the wiki has waned.

There was at one time a site (wiki.dvdholocron.com - you can check the remnants out on web.archive.org) that listed Star Wars fan projects on a wiki. It became quite popular, I'm guessing because it used the MediaWiki platform which many people were familiar with from Wikipedia.

However, the site only lasted a few months, I think the fact that it included download links led to it receiving a C&D from Lucasfilm relating to daveytod's The Clones Revealed.

It is true that Jay did once say he didn't want CRC's posted becasue of the implied link with downloads, but personally I think this is being overcautious.

How about I attempt to install MediaWiki at moth3r.heliohost.org? The site's on a free host so access can be a little flaky sometimes, but we could put some articles up as a test and if it's a success maybe badger Jay to port it over here.

PVI don't have the color bars, so I used the same capture settings for both.

I've developed a spreadsheet too. Helps me work out parameters to feed into ColorYUV to get:

coloryuv(gain_y=5.60, off_u=-0.89, off_v=0.26, off_y=6.47, cont_u=2.11, cont_v=9.78, gamma_y=-74.85)

I'll share this method in the technical forum later.

^ Moth3r's PAL set wasn't from the DC but from the French 1995 THX LDs: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Moth3rs-PAL-DVD-project/topic/1545/

Didn't he use the clv discs and not the CAV.  Someone else on these boards captured the rarer CAV coffret set.

I have always wondered if all the European transfers were from the same masters.  As no one has ever preserved the german releases this is just a guess that they are the same as the french releases.

Yes I used the 1995 French LDs (which are CAV BTW). There are too many differences in the video for it to be useful for averaging with a GOUT/DC/Faces.

The "coffret" set is also CAV and uses the same video source, but has English audio.

I think Citizen captured the German LDs and said they were near enough identical to the French discs, except for the opening crawl and the presence of fades at the end of each side. He used the French discs to fill in thee sections.

An interesting project would be to look at the feasibility of averaging the video from the three European sources: French, German and Spanish. I think they are all from the same master.

So just from a quick comparison, the Belbucus isolated score has the normal soundtrack where there's no music playing in the film, whereas the editdroid version has just silence there.

This is the main difference between the two. Also, Belbucus did something to the Cantina music to make it sound more like a live performance. Full details here.

As is there a PCM version of any isolated score, for a possible use on the BD version?

I think I still have the Belbucus ISOSCORE file as a WAV file somewhere.

"In 1985, Ben Burtt supervised a stereo remix for home video, taking into account the acoustics of television audio (as this was the pre-home theatre days it has the least dynamic range of any mix)."

Comparing it against the original Dolby Stereo tracks available, the dynamic range is pretty equal...

It was Belbucus who said, referring to the '85 mix:

From a glance at the waveform it appears to be the least dynamic of all...

It would be fairly easy to check peak vs RMS levels for both mixes in an audio editor to confirm if he was right.

She's also Scottish. And based on seeing other films she is in, it's no wonder so many people think it's not her in any version. I believe it.

But thanks for the corrects regardless! I'll look into updating the page with more accurate info. :)

While her parents were Sottish-Irish, Shelagh was born and educated in Surrey, England.

As a versatile actress, she had a "deft ability with accents".
