Do you mean that if someone quotes him then you can still see the quoted text of his post? Just tell the offending poster not to quote him!

I've also noticed that the "byte limit" needs to be increased to block some of the really long posts.

Idea: What I'd put on my own "ultimate classic edition" DVD

* Original audio track if available (for Star Wars, at least the mono mix; if possible also the stereo and 6.0 mixes), plus 1985 and 1993 remixes.
As Neil mentioned in another thread, "good luck in finding that one"!

Technically, the six-channel soundtrack was actually 4.2 - the surround channel was in mono and there were two LFE channels. Even if you could steal a 70mm film reel, the audio would need converting to 5.1 to be compatible with current home theater surround sound systems.

Usenet tutorial?
Time
Your brother certainly runs an interesting site there Skip...

But does he know you're making a keygen available for download? My suggestion is to remove that part and ask members to PM you if they need help with registering. Don't want to attract unwanted attention.

Otherwise, I think it's good, Usenet is a great resource sadly under-used (as evidenced in Revs post).

you should give

a.b.starwars

a try
Really? And there was me thinking that was an MP3 group...

Currently beta testing... but I guarantee that this will make your OT.com forum experience more enjoyable!

1. Download and install the "Proxomitron" web-filtering proxy.
http://www.proxomitron.info/files/index.html
(This program is primarily intended to block adverts, pop-up scripts, etc.. Luckily, here at OT.com we don't have such annoyances, so in the guide below I've recommended that these options are not needed.)

2. Set the program up as follows:

http://img199.exs.cx/img199/2876/image16oq.jpg
(To use web filtering only.)

http://img199.exs.cx/img199/9442/image28al.jpg
(Deactivate all the default filters - they could potentially cause problems with other sites if you leave them active.)

Click on "New" to create a new filter:

http://img194.exs.cx/img194/5461/image30qi.jpg
Copy and paste the following text into the "Matching Expression" box:
<table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="0" width="97%">*<b>DanielB</b>[br]*<img src="i/dominant/trans.gif" border="0" height="2" width="1">[br]

:: EDIT - Damn forum software. You need to manually change the square brackets in the two instances of [br] above to HTML-style braces < >.

leave the "Replacement Text" blank.

Ensure this new filter is active, and press OK.

3. Set your browser to use a proxy server for HTTP; use the address "localhost" and port "8080".
(Should work equally as well with IE or Firefox).

http://img176.exs.cx/img176/3843/image41pb.jpg

4. Make sure Proxomitron is running, and continue to browse the forum. If everything is working, you should find your enjoyment of the forum is substantially enhanced. Please post your testimonials below...

Several ISPs have opted to drop the high-traffic groups from their free service in order to get better completion and retention on the remaining groups. My ISP's Usenet feed is therefore quite reliable - but no a.b.dvd for me.

I tried out Forte a year or two ago, it's good for reading and posting to the text groups, but for the binaries I prefer Grabit (free) or Newsbin Pro ($35).

You will find a decent tutorial at http://www.slyck.com/ng.php.

Interesting little point: the reason I started learning how to use newsgroups, back in 2002, was because I read that DrGonzo was at the time posting SVCD versions of the SW trilogy!

Capture Card Comparison
Time
Originally posted by: Laserman
That is the whole point of using a card like the PDI deluxe, it had much better combing filters than the ones built into the LD players, that is why you should come out via composite if using a good capture system, or via S-Video if using a crappy capture system but a decent player.
Yes the chipset in the PDI card features a 4-line adaptive comb filter ("adaptive" I think means the same as "3D", i.e. it also considers adjacent frames as well as just 4 lines from one frame, to get better results during motion). The output from this chipset then goes to a BT878 video decoder!

Unfortunately using the composite on the D925 is of no benefit (as mentioned in another thread), because apparently the player uses it's own comb filter to split the signal before processing, and the composite output is just the chroma and luma of the s-video combined.

Glad to see the site back up. My shots 11-15 seem to have gone, but not to worry, I'll have all shots updated pretty soon.

So my page works for you now? It's still not ideal, I'd like to know how to preload all images when a new scene is selected.

Yes Doom9's page is pretty clever, the only gripe I have is that the zoom is a basic point-sampling "digital" zoom which gives a blocky result, I would prefer to see something like a bi-cubic zoom that more accurately represents what it would look like on an analogue TV. But maybe that's too much to do in Javascript.

Good capture cards - recommendations?

I don't like the idea of a card like the Hauppauge PVRs that only capture in MPEG as I want to convert the NTSC footage to PAL format which will require a re-encode (and thus more loss of detail). I'd agree that capturing to AVI (huffyuv or mjpeg) is preferable; but why would you want to convert NTSC to PAL? Most European DVD players will play NTSC just fine.

ATI All-In-Wonder 9600XT - This worked fine except would only capture in Black and White via the S-Video input.
ATI All-In-Wonder 9800SE - Same problem as above which is really annoying as the picture quality was quite good, as above. TBH this sounds more like a PAL/NTSC format mixup than a problem with the cards.

MSI TV @nywhere Master - This worked fine but the picture quality wasn't really good enough (it's only a cheapish card) even through S-video.
My card is about the cheapest you can get (OK it doesn't have a tuner, which is one of the reasons why it's so cheap) but I'm happy with the results I'm getting so far.

I know I could probably get a better quality film if I bought one from someone here who has already done the work and with better Equipment than I have here (Pioneer CLD925)...
You can't get a better PAL player than the D925! (Well, maybe the 2950, but that's up for debate...)

Info: What do you think of Lowry's work for the DVD release of the Indiana Jones Trilogy?

It appears you are correct, a bloke called Rick Dean who’s a director at THX was responsible for re-timing the colour on ANH (source). But it’s only fair to blame Lowry for faults like the obliteration of the laser bolt glows and the starfield.
