Tellan, I think the Greedo clip is excellent. If you look closely you can see a momentary pause in the video (I assume you had to lengthen the shot somehow), but it's hardly noticeable - in fact, I didn't see it first time around.

As for sound comments, well, I've expressed my feelings on artificially created 5.1 mixes on previous occasions, and I seem to be in the minority, so I'll leave it at that.

Tellan, this project sounds very promising. I previewed the Darth Editous release, and found those pink and magenta blaster flashes in the Tantive corridor very distracting (not DE's fault, of course) so I'm glad to hear you've attempted to fix them.

So you've restored the original Han/Greedo scene? As noted in the DE thread, the scene on his edit looked a bit clumsy with the additional shot from the SE inserted.

Progress with ROTJ:

Colour settings have been tweaked. Should not be a red shift or washed-out looking colour in this transfer.

Sharpness - and thus halo effect - has been reduced slightly. Halos are still present as that's the nature of analogue video. I tried eliminating the halos altogether, but the result just looked too blurred in my eyes, so I've settled on a compromise.

Audio will be encoded properly this time. (That means louder). Not sure whether I should try to expand the dynamic range in the light of Citizen's listening tests.

Yes I took a look at that guide some time ago. Unfortunately the stuff about measuring the RMS level of your source doesn't take into account fuckwits like me who insert the WAV at -6dB into Acid Pro.

It also doesn't mention that the AC3 file that is output from Acid Pro actually has a WAV header, that will throw off some authoring packages that are expecting to see a standard AC3 header. And I don't agree that "equal loudness contour" should be checked when measuring the RMS value; the A-weighted average sound pressure level you are trying to find is not equal loudness (according to the instructions that came with my Radioshack sound level meter, equal loadness is known as the C-weighted level).

What I would like to see is a reference for the different laserdisc releases of the trilogy that exist.

There is already some good information at LDDB, blam1 and davisdvd, but it would be useful to have information specifically related to the suitabilty as a capture source - list of flaws/defects, overall picture quality, etc. Also what sort of price you could expect to pay on eBay!

Maybe something I might take on myself one day.

I still think my version has the edge in terms of detail (compare Threepio's face in shot 5, but if you consider Citizen's disc as a whole - colour, absence of halos & dot crawl, audio, menus and extras I think he has upped the standard.

There is of course still a potential for improvement, possibly to be achieved by using an earlier laserdisc set - sans "dirt concealment" - with a high-end player. (I hope the X0 project team are taking note.)

Kill Bill Vol. 1 - is this a straight bootleg of the Japanese release, or have you fixed the subtitles for English-speaking viewers? (i.e. forced English subs should automatically come on for parts of the dialogue spoken in Japanese).

Also, is the nfo correct in that you've ditched DTS and AC3 in favour of an MPEG audio stream? And if you don't mind me saying, 3.76GB is rather undersized.

Thanks for the kind offer, but I've downloaded the NTSC DL version off the newsgroup. (Even though I don't have a DL burner...)

I've the first two shots up now, I'll finish off the set later on tonight.

Now, to get Dark_Jedi's Japanese transfer...

Info Wanted: an Original Trilogy preservation project with French audio?
Time
One of the comments here says:
The sound of this LD is Stereo and not Dolby Surround because the original 1977 French mix for the movie was only a two-track Stereo mix, due to limitations of French theaters at the time.
Is that true?

It would be fairly quick for me to sample the French soundtrack and post it as an AC3 file for people who want to patch the DVD themselves, like I did with the mono mix. But there will be a little gap in it where the dodgy side change occurs.

However, I'm going to get on with ROTJ first, as that's what most people are waiting for (and if I'm not careful, Citizen will have done it in five different formats before I've even done one )

So information *is* freely traded, and there is enough info around for any of us to incorporate (or not) into our own projects. I'm glad Mike continues to share his findings, and that is why we share ours, as between the OT community it adds to the information available for us all to utilise.
^^^^ What he said.

Mike's site is not only a valuable reference for the defects present on the DVD release, it also contains some very well-written editorial.

I agree with ocpmovie on the bitrate. 9Mbps is bitrate whoring - unless you're encoding a 1-pass CBR or on-the-fly with a MPEG capture card/DVD recorder.

A 5-pass encode on anything over 4Mbps is IMO more than adequate, less than that you might want to think about increasing the number of passes, below 3.5Mbps you should consider deleting some extras, and less than 3Mbps should be avoided.

If a user may enter whatever they wish, what's to stop them entering "Jedi Knight" or similar? I say forget the worthiness bit, and just let people have a free-for-all.

Apart from that, I'm fully in agreement with the new system.
