There is a good chance that the master is HD. Even if that was dubbed down to sub-masters, those sub-masters could show the same flaw if it was added early on in the chain.

On the other hand, knowing that Faces has this same flaw, and that it's a frame before a cut, I'd have to agree that there is a stronger possibility that it's on the film itself.
I'd vote it's a video flaw. The locations of these dropouts do not generally coincide with cut/splice points, e.g.:

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/7682/line2cy.jpg

And why do they not appear on the VHS? My '95 VHS set is from the same print (i.e. famous burn marks in first Tantive shot) but does not have these line dropouts present.

The single line dropouts, as in the top picture, can easily be removed. They do occur in TESB and ROTJ, but they were removed by the DeScratch filter in my script. (A newer version of DeScratch was released after I had completed ANH; this newer version had more options available and I was able to tune the settings specifically for this kind of defect. I posted the script somewhere in my project thread.)

The type of defect shown in the bottom picture would be more difficult to remove. I never noticed it before.

Well, the general opinion (which is probably fair comment) on my ROTJ is that the audio is crap and that I should have made it as sharp as the first two (halos and all).

And I don't believe that there will be a Dr. M NTSC conversion.

So yes, it's definitely worth the bother.

I think these video "line drops" are a problem with my player. I mentioned it in my project thread on 18 March 2005.

I applied a filter to remove these lines, however it wasn't 100% sucessful for ANH. I tweaked the settings a bit for the other two, and it worked much better.

Something wrong with DirectShow overlay? Graphics card drivers? Do other video files play OK?

You could try extracting the pure MPEG file from the SVCD (ISOBuster, VCDGear, etc.) and checking with VirtualDubMod.

Did you fix the missing screenwipe at the end of side one, and if so, what did you use?

I checked out your preview, and just some thoughts comparing it with my DVD -

Brightness, contrast and colour all seem good and correct. The green laserbolts are nicer than my capture, which is slightly off-colour in the greens and yellows.

The picture is noticeably softer than mine. However, the increased sharpness in mine has the effect of worsening the dot crawl and increasing noise. Even though you didn't use a noise filter and I did, my capture appears to contain about the same amount of video noise as yours. Overall yours is probably truer to the laserdisc source.

I didn't compare the audio, but I expect it's much better than my VHS source.

While playing in MPC, select Play -> Filters, then look what audio decoder is being used. It'll usually be either MPEG-1 (for MP3 audio) or AC3Filter (for AC-3 audio).

If it's either of the above 2 I don't see why you couldn't extract it.

I suggest you post more details of the programs/methods you tried and the error messages you received in in the Technical Discussions forum.

No, you don't need to include an SFV file for Usenet posts. SFVs are more often used for transferring files by other methods (esp. FTP), and are normally used to check the RAR volumes.

However, it is useful to post some form of verification at the start of the post, either an SFV or the first PAR2 file, so that downloaders can identify any bad files before the PAR2 recovery volumes appear.

fan edit: removing 'the message' from disney films?

Slightly off topic, but regarding this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6467584868
It says that it's an original boxed set, not a bootleg - but everything about it looks dodgy. Anyone know if there was indeed an official Disney box set released in Asia?

Edit: Another one:

ocpmovie, I was trying to make sense of something you mentioned in another thread:

I don't understand why this is a problem? The PAL and NTSC versions contain exactly the same frames of film, it's only the speed on playback that's different.
