- Rip/demux the video off my DVD to one big M2V file using DVDDecrypter. Open this in VirtualDubMod.
- Open another instance of VirtualDubMod, and load the demuxed M2V from your VHS capture. Add the German WAV file as an audio stream. (I assume your VHS capture is in sync - well, as synced as possible for a different language dub!

- Switching between the two, scan through the frames to identify points where the video streams differ. You will probably find that the VHS version is longer, as the laserdisc is missing a few frames at some points. In your VHS version, mark start and end points for the additional frames in VDubMod and press delete.
- Eventually both instances of VDubMod will contain a video with exactly the same number of frames. At this point, select your German audio stream and save as WAV. The saved WAV should be exactly in sync with the video from my DVD.
This is a fairly rough method of doing this, and if there are several frames cut in a row there may be an audible pop at the cut point.

When the reviewer mentions "stars" in the black bars, I think he's referring to "specks" caused by small video dropouts.
And his complaint about the cut at the end of side one of ROTJ; it occurs just before Luke jumps off the sail barge plank. No missing frames though (unlike the end of side 1 of ANH) so not a problem when joined to make a DVD.

Basically there's nothing there that had not already been discovered - picture quality is well defined, colours are not as vivid as they might be, some exterior scenes are grainy, and the presence of video "drops". But it's great to see it all confirmed by someone who reviewed the set when it first came out.
However, the statement that says that the orignal French dub was not encoded in Dolby Stereo is still confusing me. If it was mixed from the original music and effects, with only the dialogue replaced with the French voice actors, then surely the surround encoding must still be present in the track?

What do I have to do with the footage to make it playable on my DVD player, which is VCD and SVCD compatible? Check whether the video complies with the specs for VCD - i.e. MPEG-1 352x240 1150kbps etc. If so, then you can use it to author a VCD. If it is some other resolution, then you will need to re-encode first.

Is it best then to use a program to convert the AVI into mpeg 2, then burn it? If so, what prog would you recommend?
I have my own preferred method for converting AVIs to DVD, using VirtualDubMod, AVISynth, CCE and DVDAuthorGUI.While you're here Moth3r, I have a question: I used my digital camera to get MPEG movie footage of my children's school Christmas concert. I've heard other programs mentioned (WinAVI?) that are more automated and user-friendly.

Anyway, this is bad. Nero is not the best program to use for converting video.
First thing to consider; can your player play MPEG-4 video? It may have a "DivX Certified" logo on it or just say MPEG-4 compatible. If so, you're in luck. Simply burn the AVI file to a data CD, and it should play.
If it can't play MPEG-4, then think about getting one that can. Or a modded X Box. Or a laptop with TV-out. Any of these options is preferable to an AVI to DVD conversion.
As a last resort, you can convert. Use another program for the conversion; Nero is good for the burning only. There are hundreds of different methods of AVI -> DVD, everyone has their preference. Start reading the guides at videohelp.com.

While the second and last parts of the Trilogy had the privilege of Dolby Stereo encoding for the French soundtrack, A New Hope unfortunately never had this benefit. Only the original English version, in 1977, was encoded in Dolby Stereo. This is why today only the English version of A New Hope can benefit from Dolby Surround on laserdisc.http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=9&threadid=4067

Do you burn AVI files to a data DVD (and your player is MPEG-4 - or "DivX" - compatible)? Or do you use Nero to convert the AVIs into MPEG-2 and burn the disc in DVD video format? I'd d/l the AVI file and burn it onto a dvd disc using nero. Happy days!

This auction:
http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6473935976
has a scan of a magazine review of the PAL THX French laserdiscs, as used as my video capture source.
Now I haven’t done much French since school, and it doesn’t help that the scan is a low-res JPG, but there are bits in there that I’d be interested to read. I think there’s something there about ANH not being in Dolby surround, something about line drops in the laserdisc video, and something about the first French release being poor quality.
Does anyone want to take a stab at translating this for me?

I haven't used NTSC DV myself, but I understand the solution is to use VirtualDub's chroma smoother filter on the video before compression to MPEG-2.
