Info Wanted: What preservation versions have Duel Layer and PCM? Will be making my own after seeing what works/doesn't work

This has nothing to do with PCM being preferable to AC3. Your blind test proves that the original Dolby surround mix on the laserdiscs is preferable to the new 5.1 mix on the DVDs.

Which I think most people here would agree with, (especially a certain Mr. Bulk ).

2. I tried watching them on a high definition television. While the picture quality was acceptable (best I could expect), the picture was too small. Why? The 4:3 laserdisc signal had been transferred, without adaptation, and became a 4:3 DVD signal. This was the beginning of my education on high definition, or 16:9, formatting. Does anyone know what software you need to make sure the picture is framed in a 16:9 signal? Has anyone been successful in converting a 4:3 signal to 16:9?
Firstly, most 16:9 displays should have an option to zoom 4:3 "letterboxed" widescreen DVDs to the proper size. So if the picture is too small, look for a zoom setting on your display.

Second, 16:9 does not equal high definition. (I don't know if you knew that already, I couldn't tell from your post.) Several versions exist that are formatted for 16:9 displays - DrGonzo, Cowclops V2, Moth3r, etc.

Citizen has produced a transfer in high-bitrate HD-res XviD format, which is probably the best choice for a HTPC viewing on a HD display.

Yes, NTSC is 23.976 fps progressive, so the total number of encoded frames should be the same in both the NTSC and the PAL versions. Due to the increased resolution you would expect the PAL video file to be ~20% larger for the same quality.

Deleted Magic is an excellent disc - but I would class it as a fan-made documentary rather than a fan edited movie.

I don't think boon23's intention was to ignore you, I think it's just that your DVDs don't fall within his definition of a fan edit.

Using the word "gay" pejoratively does not necessarily insinuate homosexuality. For example, whilst watching AoTC, someone might shout "this is so gay" when clearly, a movie has no gender so can't possibly be homosexual. It may be offensive to some, but this usage has been common since the eighties.

Similarly, a CS player may type "OMGZ ur so ghey!!!111!" as a general derogatory comment towards another player's lack of ability.

Thus endeth today's lesson on the finer points of the English language...

Help Wanted: 1980s ITV Broadcast of Star Wars onto DVD?
Time
I hadn't noticed the macrobinocular difference before, but I wasn't really paying close attention to the video.

I did notice that several scenes last for 2-4 frames longer than the French laserdisc video (the audio needed quite a few minor cuts to remain in sync).

BTW, the sample you posted has the fields in the wrong order - I don't know if this is your DVD recorder or something you did to the file afterwards. But it's an easy problem to fix if JD wants to re-encode to put it on a single DVD.

Now, here's a snippet of information for you. I used to have recordings off ITV for all three films - sadly, Empire and Jedi have been either lost or taped over. Anyway, in Jedi, rather than re-subtitle Jabba to fit the 4:3 frame, they pan and scanned the frame slowly from left to right, so that the 2.35:1 picture containing the original subtitles gradually "scrolled" sideways! It was a truly awful, lazy decision, which is why I remember it so well.

Actually, it wasn't at a side change, which is why it's so annoying. It occurs about half way through side 4, in the middle of the Endor battle. If it had been at a side change I would have seen it straight away.

As for a correction, I would just scale vertically. No-one is going to notice if the aspect ratio is 2% off, that is within the margin of variance of most displays anyway.

To the Creators/Faneditors who are creating DUAL-LAYER discs!
Time
My personal choice is to steer clear of dual layer for the time being.

To achieve a slight increase in quality*:
  • The upload time is doubled.
  • Blanks are 4 times as expensive.
  • Compatibility problems seem to be tenfold.
I may get a dual layer burner when this current burner packs up, but I'm not going to be in a big hurry to start using it.

* If using a digital source. Using laserdisc/TV/VHS, any quality increase is doubtful.

I believe you should use converttoyuy2 if you are encoding with CCE, because CCE doesn't accept YV12 input directly.

Funny thing, language. In the post above Karyudo has used "Brits" to refer to us British, which is not in the slightest offensive.

but i am going to leave the word Japanese in Special Collection, because that is what it is,that is how it is advertised, but instead of the other i will use "Cropped Edition" is this better?
How about *UNSUBBED* ?

It would be interesting to see the screens of the early laserdisc releases (even pan & scan) to compare how much the film had deteriorated and aged. This is something I'd like to do, if someone can send me the relevant shots, I can add them to my little comparison page. I'll contact dark_jedi about this.

On a side note, do you mind cleaning up the "Unbearable HC" thread over in the SE forum?
As Zion said, my focus is on the three preservation forums. The rest of the board is pretty much self-moderating.

DJ, the CCE template I gave you was for encoding 29.97fps interlaced captures.

It will need to be modified for encoding 23.976fps IVTC'ed progressive video. I assume you're applying IVTC, as you cannot resize to anamorphic unless you do.

EDIT: Also, maybe you should think of another name for the project. The term "Jap" could be considered offensive.

I don't know if you've seen ImgBurn - it's basically an updated version of the DVDDecrypter burning engine.
