And ask away. I think a v3.0 is inevitable in time, although I'd probably be starting more or less from scratch.

Back in October I said I had a couple of suggestions for improvements if you ever did a v3.0. Here now are my belated thoughts - but I stress again that v2.5 is an incredible achievement and this should be taken as constructive criticism...

The first is a problem inherent to Lowry's cleanup of the films for the 2004 masters:

The red lights at the far end of the corridor have a piercing intensity that just looks photographically unnatural.

Here's the same frame from the GOUT DVD for comparison:

There are several examples of this, e.g. the red reflections off C3PO's body here:

And blue here:

GOUT frames for reference:

This has been discussed at length before, basically Lowry's algorithm seems to have taken any highlights with a bit of colour, decided that they are obscured by film dust/dirt and given them a huge unnatural boost. The same process was responsible for the magenta blaster flashes and Luke's green lightsabre.

I'm not sure if there's an easy fix to the damage inflicted by this shoddy cleanup.

The second issue though you probably can do something about - compression artefacts. I was surprised and a little disappointed that there was noticeable artefacting in a 11GB video encode. I go back to the death star control room (but there are a few other places where it is particularly noticeable), look at the macroblocking on the wall and hand, and the mosquito noise around the lights:

For comparison, here is a screenshot from a 1080p HDTV encode that is only 8GB:

Did you use x264 for the encoding, or some other encoder?

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes

005: Certain explosions/flashes during reel #1 of ANH arrive one frame early (or late) in the 97SE.

I discovered these by running a scene-change-detection algorithm on reel #1 of GOUT and 97SE (TB) and diff'ing the results.

Are these one-frame differences something you're interested in recording?

Just noticed this post - I guess my observation above is one example of these recompositions.

What causes rainbow colours to show up in striped objects in B&W films/TV shows played on a regular TV?

High-frequency luminance information in a composite video signal results in chrominance cross-talk, due to imperfect luminance/chrominance separation in the comb filter.

Update on recent troll and sock puppet activity
Time

Troll banning/thread bumping

You have probably already noticed, but coltonlolz has now been banned for repeatedly bumping old threads with pointless or irrelevant posts. He was given several warnings about his behavior which he ignored.

Request from the moderation team: in future if you see this kind of activity, please notify one of us (SilverWook, Moth3r or Anchorhead) in a PM instead of posting a response in the bumped thread. Additional posts in a bumped thread just make extra work for us when deleting posts.

Sock puppet accounts/username spoofing

You may also have noticed an account with username spoofed to look like coltonlolz's. This spoofing was a result of someone exploiting a vulnerability in the forum software (which, incidentally, has now been fixed). Although the accounts looked identical, they were completely separate, and nobody who created an account through this bug was able to access the true account's posts or messages, or cause any real harm other than confusing the user base.

Last time this happened I threatened to ban the main account associated with future sock puppet accounts - and this would have happened to AnctuFaalb, had he not owned up of his own accord and posted a public apology.

From this point on, no more sock puppet accounts. The two long-standing account that slipped through the net have now been dealt with, and any future socks will result in the banning of both the sock and the main account.
