Blank DVD's: + or - ?
Time
Indeed, the brand name means very little. What is important is the Media ID code, which reveals who really manufactures the discs. (For example, discs branded TDK may actually be manufacturered by Ritek, Hitachi/Maxell, etc.)

People say not to buy Memorex discs because they're crap quality. I had one box of discs with a CMC media ID code which were awful - but the next batch may be made by Ricoh and perform much better.

Check out these links:
Blank media quality guide: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Videohelp media list: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
CD Freaks blank media forum: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f33/

For UK disc buyers: SVP is an online store that actually tells you the Media ID of the discs you are buying. I've found THESE DL discs to be very good value.

... P&S, bad quality DVD-what can you do...

Never heard of this film before, so I did a bit of digging. Although the DVD is P&S, apparently there was a Japanese laserdisc that was widescreen (AR letterboxed 1.75:1). Unfortunately it contains subtitles in the picture.

However, next Tuesday 27th May at 2:35am, it will be shown on Sky Movies Sci-fi/Horror. Maybe someone who subscribes to Sky Movies (I don't) will be able to capture a nice anamorphic version for you (admittedly with PAL speedup, but that's easily dealt with...)

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>

Colour correction results looking pretty good. A few technical questions out of curiosity:

What software are you using for the colour correction?
Does the software work in YUV or RGB colourspace?
Are you making adjustments "by eye", or comparing histograms from the GOUT?
Are adjustments applied to frames as a whole, or are you doing any masking/rotoscoping to apply changes to select areas only?

Yeah yeah yeah, but what you might not have known is that some shots in the film utilize a guy in the suit. They're quick but they're in the movie if you look for them. For example, when you see Jar Jar's hand as he tries to fish the wrench out of Anakin's racer engine, that's his "real" hand.

Maybe adywan hasn't finished posting the PARs for the NTSC version? (Assume you are refering to the DVD-9, although the "purist" edition posted previously is a DVD-5.)

Anyway, if all the RAR files are complete, you don't need the PAR files. Just use the first PAR2 file with QuickPAR to check the integrity of the RAR set, if it says "repair not needed" then you're good to go.

Doesn't easynews cover alt.binaries.starwars?

Easynews does carry a.b.starwars, according to http://www.easynews.com/list-all-groups.phtml.

Star Wars - The Vintage Edit (* unfinished project *)
Time
Paul - I don't know whether or not you ever managed to sucessfully complete the encode for this project. Since I've recently acquired the facility to watch 720p MKVs in HD, I've just re-read this entire thread. A couple of points struck me. Maybe it's too late now, but you could always keep in mind for V2... :-)

After using the colourlike filter and histograms to match the colours in the HD source to the GOUT, you say you made some further manual tweaks. Most people agree that the GOUT needs a little more colour saturation and deeper black levels - are your tweaks along these lines?

Most of the negative criticism of your ESB Vintage Edit, and ocpmovie's Classic Editions, centre around the GOUT/laserdisc video 'standing out' because: a) it wobbles around, compared to the stablized 2004 video, and b) it shows a lot more film grain than the sanitized 2004 image.

For 'a', G-force has developed an AviSynth script to help stabilize the wobble in the GOUT (thread HERE). Maybe this would help.

I had an idea to deal with 'b' - this might seem nuts, but how about adding more grain to the 2004 HD source? (There is a discussion on the GOUT grain issue HERE.)

You could just use fake grain, however someone above mentioned Close Encounters. I've not seen it, but from reading reviews apparently the Blu-ray release shows an excellent transfer complete with authentic '70s film grain. In theory, if you could obtain a rip of the blu-ray (to be deleted after use, of course) you could extract the grain from it (by using AviSynth's 'subtract' to get the difference between the original and a de-grained image - i.e. the grain itself) then overlay this onto your HD source. Voila - Authentic '70s grain added back in to Star Wars HD!

Edit: Just wanted to add that, like everyone else who's posted, I'm keen to see this project completed.

Can anyone provide a link to info about "black magic"? I would like to know more about what it is and what it does? I'm not even sure if it's a piece of hardware or software. I tried searching for it but I end up at sites for colorising b&w film/photo or something with little puppets and needles.

'Blackmagic' is the nickname for a process Laserman developed; it uses Shake and some custom scripts to combine multiple sources.

Info was posted here:

Info Wanted: Jason and the Argonauts criterion laserdisc - with ray harryhausen commentary - any preservations?
Time
I was looking into buying the Encore (PAL) LD a while back.
BBC engineers worked for 9 months to get this right. According to Ray Harryhausen, it is not a widescreen film.

Never found it at a decent price.

According to THIS, the Region 1 DVD also includes a 4:3 version (double-sided disc?)

Yeah I'm using v2.58.

I don't know why it's not working, then.

It's possible that you installed an older version of Avisynth in the past that's still handling AVS files - to make sure you are using the version you think you are, try a simple script with just one line:
Version()
Preview this AVS file and see what version is reported.

You could also try, for debugging purposes, replacing Spline16Resize with LanczosResize.

Info Wanted: Regarding the porting and preservation of commentary tracks (for example, Ratatouille or Stardust)
Time
guitarfan01 said:

So, is it alright to ask for these things (mind you, I'm not asking)?

This is covered in the FAQ (see #12b). Basically, it's alright to use the forum to ask for commentaries off laserdiscs - it's still technically illegal, but we hope that the copyright police won't bother to come after Jay if it's obsolete stuff that's being shared.

I'd love to get a rip of the Stardust commentary somehow.

You need to read the FAQ as well. (Unless you were asking how to rip the audio track off the Region 2 DVD that you have legitimately purchased - in which case, post your query in the technical help forum.)

Originals: A New Preference
Time
Regarding your sig:
thecolorsblend2 said:

I want ... precisely what we saw on opening day for each Star Wars film in the original mono. An alternate 5.1 track is strictly optional in my book.

Only Star Wars had a mono track, and it was actually created some time after the opening day. The initial theatrical engagements of all three films had Dolby Stereo tracks on the 35mm prints and Dolby 6-track "baby boom" mixes on the 70mm prints.

The 6-track is obviously the superior format, and it wouldn't take much to transfer the original elements to a 5.1 mix while remaining true to the opening day (see Blade Runner).
